+100. This is what I always try and explain to folks with limited success. I live in the Liberty Harbor development and work in WFC. My actual train ride is ~6-8 minutes depending on PATH temperament. Yet my door to desk commute is ~25 minutes. About the same via Paulus Hook ferry.

It's an hour in basically the middle of the night. This is the myth about distant suburbs. Ask someone who commutes from Morristown, for instance, how long their commute is. They'll tell you "an hour" because the direct, rush hour train from Morristown to NY Penn is an 62 minutes. But no one lives at the train station in Morristown - I've looked. There is probably a fifteen minute drive/park situation on one end and then a similar (or longer) commute to the office once you arrive at Penn Station. That "hour commute" is likely at least an hour and a half - times two each day. Same for Princeton - that's 3 hours-plus each day in R/T commuting. From the time I lock my front door until the time my butt hits the seat at a lower Manhattan office is 30 to 35 minutes. That's a real difference and explains why so many more people would (otherwise inexplicably) live in Jersey City rather than Princeton.

This place is cool especially if you have children, I have two friends living there now..but my next move will most likely be out of NJ. Honestly the taxes here are just ridiculous and I can care less about schools.

When I leave JC I would rather move straight to a rural area but that would not work for now as office is in Manhattan.
Prior to a big move to the country my wife/I have somewhat considered Maplewood/Montclair. She leans toward Montclair as she works in Paramus and once baby(s) start school it may be better for one of us to be closer to home. I lean towards Maplewood or staying in JC until a big move is feasible. We'll see as this moving vs staying is a hot topic in our house at the moment.

IF Brooklyn were an orange, it would be sold at Whole Foods.
IF Brooklyn were a tree, it would be oak. IF Brooklyn were pants, it would be jeans. If Brooklyn were a sport, it would be ladder ball. IF Brooklyn were a testicle, it would be the left one. I get it. These people moved to NJ and refuse to admit that they moved to NJ. Thus they must grasp onto some misguided idea that their area is "just as cool" as the place they left.

45 minutes from what? Edison? Don't get me wrong, I like Princeton a lot and would live there in a heartbeat but even at 6am on a Sunday morning (which I have done quite a few times) it's almost an exactly hour drive. And that's from JC - not the city. When you do it on a weekday during commuting hours, Rte. 1 is awful.

Maybe we can offload the stupid "6th Borough" title to Maplewood?

Among some of the 'best of' threads concern
picking up after your dog not shoveling your walk after a storm any local restaurant review, opening, or closing drop off/pick up etiquette at local schools left turn parking into angled spots in South Orange and Maplewood and my all time favorite kids from Irvington and East Orange illegally attending Mapleood/South Orange schools

I'm quite familiar with Maplewood. They're super tolerant, except for those who are Republican-then they're nasty and intolerant.
The discussion board Maplewoodonline is a must read, it's absolutely hysterical at times.

Just call it ?Brooklyn West.?
That?s how many of the residents of Maplewood think of their town, especially those who have followed the typical migration pattern of moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn to Maplewood, which they see as an extension of the hip, cultured, community-involved lifestyle they?d grown accustomed to in New York. ?A lot of like-minded transplants have come here from various enclaves of the city seeking the same kind of life in a suburban setting, which happens to be a beautiful setting, with parks and rolling hills and colonial houses,? said Alexis Robie, a television producer who moved here from Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn, last October with his wife, Corie, and two young children. They bought a 1920 side-hall colonial with three bedrooms and one full and two half baths, paying $630,000. ![]() Bonnie Ramsey, a recent arrival from Park Slope, Brooklyn, agreed, noting that she and her husband, Matt, and their three children were ?welcomed with open arms? when they moved last November to this Essex County town of about four square miles. One set of neighbors invited them to a barbecue the day they arrived, while neighbors on the other side invited them to dinner the following evening. More NYT
