Get one of these - They are cheap and a no-brainer to install - Just replace your porch or front door light - just screw it in !

Make sure all the extension ladders in your neighborhood are locked down, this is one of the common ways 2nd and 3rd floor units get broken in to, especially from the side or the back

You should talk to your landlord about securing your apartment. It's probably on him/her to address this and they'll want to do everything they can to avoid liability in the future.

Get this:

http://simplisafe.com/

For an apartment of your size, you'll need a few extra Entry sensors for you windows and you'll have to get the Extra 105DB Siren (a must).

Best new product I have bought in years. Everything wireless and battery driven. Hung by adhesive backings and set up my entire house in 15 minutes. Can't say enough good things about it. Do NOT have to buy monitoring services if you don't want (I didn't. The 105DB Siren is enough to wake up the neighborhood.)

It's a one time investment for peace of mind and security.
Highly recommend to all.

Those are pretty rare. Most people don't want to take the associated risk with rappelling off of a roof and would look for an easier target.

plenty of options and solutions for this.

try these.

for top windows (outside window) use this

http://hardwareonlinestore.com/index. ... Lmwm86Uk8ACFScV7AodyToAwA

for bottom window (inside window) use this

http://www.swisco.com/Thumbscrew-Lock ... JC415uUk8ACFbTm7AodxGUALA

this will not void any lease as it is not permanent.

Window bars with a bow out for an air conditioner.

You can buy them "off the shelf", doesn't have to be custom made.

A neighbor in my building (McGinley Square) had a break-in at her apartment yesterday. Like me, she's on the fifth floor, which is the top floor.

The police think the intruder got in through the top half of a window that has an air conditioner in the lower half. That means he must have lowered himself from the roof, despite the eight feet between the roof and the top of the window.

Now of course I'm concerned about the windows in my apartment that have air conditioners in them?naively, I'd never considered them as a potential point of entry before. What's the best way to secure a window with an AC unit in it against burglars? I've jammed lengths of wood into the frame for now. Are there better solutions?

Also, how common is this kind of break-in? I hope no one has had any experience with this, but if you have, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
