Jersey City celebrates at the 54th annual Puerto Rican Heritage Festival and Parade
By Patrick McGovern | The Jersey Journal August 17, 2014 at 8:43 AM Thousands of people filled the streets around Exchange Place in Jersey City Saturday afternoon to celebrate their heritage and community at the 54th annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival and Parade. The scent of empanadas, plantains, roasted pork and other multi-cultural foods filled the air at J. Owen Grundy Park. The main activities of the day centered around two first-time events for the festival. A Golden Gloves boxing event and classic car show both attracted large crowds. Francisco DeJesus, 57, of Patterson came to the event to showcase his 1968 Chevy C-10 pickup truck, which took him three and a half years to restore. ?I?m having fun showing off my truck,? he said. ?A lot of people have come by to take a look.? DeJesus also noted the cultural significance of the festival. ?It?s good to let the city know the power of Puerto Ricans,? he said. ?We dedicate a lot to this town.? Santos Rosado, 55, of Newark, was at the festival with his 1929 Ford Woody Wagon, which was particularly popular with festivalgoers taking pictures. ?I lived in Jersey City a long time before moving to Newark,? said Rosado. ?It?s important to come back and celebrate our people.? Many of the people at the festival came from surrounding towns and cities. ?You have all the different New Jersey Puerto Rican communities coming together,? said Judith Baratta, 41, of Union City. ?And it?s not just for Puerto Ricans,? added Dorimar Rodriguez, 31, also of Union City. ?There are lots of different communities represented here.? This year's Jersey City Puerto Rican Day parade and festival will be dedicated to slain Jersey City Detective Melvin Santiago, the president of the event announced.
"We, as a committee, think he deserves this honor," said Luis Lebron, president of the Puerto Rican Heritage Festival and Parade, celebrating its 54th year. Santiago was killed in the line of duty when he was shot in an ambush outside the Walgreen's on Kennedy Boulevard near Communipaw Avenue while responding to a report of a robbery on July 13. Lebron added that the committee is currently reaching out to Santiago's family ? his father is of Puerto Rican descent ? for the series of events that will take place from Aug. 15 to Aug. 17 in Jersey City. A series of flag-raisings will be held throughout Jersey City ? I am, in fact, quite proud to be from PR. Born and raised, and feel very lucky to have had the upbringing I had. I just have ABSOLUTELY nothing in common with the riff raff that feels so adamantly compelled to "celebrate" being Puerto Rican by putting on a trashy spectacle and (generally) acting like savages. As I told 07302, go enjoy festivities. I will read about the aftermath the next day.

Do so by being a role model, by behaving like a responsible citizen and honor your past by not bringing shame and embarrassment to those that came before you. Or, you can participate in these spectacles, blast music, get wasted, act like a clown and call yourself a proud Puerto Rican.

Can't wait for the endless amount of trash, drunken brawls, loud music blasting at 10pm on Sunday night, gangs of kids threatening local residents and broken car windows. All in the name of celebrating "cultural diversity" and partially at taxpayers' expense.

The festivities will begin early on Aug. 15 with a gala at Casino in the Park in Lincoln Park in Jersey City at 7 p.m. On the following day, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m., a festival will be held at Exchange Place at J. Owen Grundy Park including multi-cultural food and children's activities. "We would like to invite people of all ethnic (groups) to explore and educate themselves on Puerto Rican culture and its contributions to New Jersey, Jersey City and the country," said Luis Lebron, president of the committee that organizes event. Festival-goers will meet on Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. for a parade, led by this year's grand marshal, Freeholder E.
