? A 23-year-old city man has admitted to spray painting graffiti on nine Downtown locations on or near Newark Avenue, including two schools, police say.
The Storms Avenue man was arrested on Jan. 19 and charged with one count of criminal mischief for the nine instances of graffiti, according to public-safety spokeswoman Carly Baldwin. The charge is a third-degree crime. The graffiti ? in two different variations, both referencing a feminine hygiene product ? was found in late December on Morlees clothing store on Newark Avenue, St. Mary High School on Third Street, Lucky 7 bar on Second Street and more. Graffiti on the French American Academy school on Third Street cost $500 to remove, according to police. The 23-year-old, who police say was arrested in August 2014 on similar charges, told police he was sorry and would help clean up his latest street art. He told police he is "not allowed" at Lucky 7 anymore because a worker there caught him tagging the building, according to a police report. More

I applaud your effort to remove the graffiti in your neighborhood. Usually if the owner of the property is too lazy or apathetic to deal with the defacement of their property they certainly will be equally as such to someone removing the graffiti.
I find that normally these people are business owners or owners of rental buildings. I may, or may not know someone who has also removed graffiti in their neighborhood. If you asked that someone they would probably tell you that they find the best time to remove graffiti is early saturday morning in order to avoid unnecessary confrontation. Quote:

I'm with JCpaddy. I've called the Incinerator Authority, and they've been mostly good. That said, we've taken upon ourselves to try to keep up the stretch of Newark Ave. between Dickinson and 75. We pick up garbage, report and paint over graffiti as needed -- yup, even the trash cans. Of course, this is all property that is either public, owned by the railroads, or empty lots. We do it because we got tired of hearing me bitch about how trashy and abandoned this stretch was. We wouldn't do this to anybody's property. If they don't take care of their own stuff... well, that just reflects on them.

As I understand it, the city will paint over it for you. I guess it's luck
of the draw as to how good the painter is. They cover the graffiti; they don't repaint the entire surface. Call that resource number and have them direct you.

There's a documentary about this on Netflix called Vigilante. It doesn't really solve much, but it brings up these arguments.

LOL... our community hero. Who gave you the right to trespass on someone's property, let alone paint it? That's just the same as tagging it. Start messing with the wrong person's property and then threatening them with assult is likely to get you shot.

"If there was graffiti on my building and some idiot came by and decided to paint over it himself, I would have them arrested." - S. Wilson
WFT? Are you serious? That is the most idiotic statement I've read on here in a long time. If someone is willing to take the initiative and be proactive in the removal or painting over of the graffiti, why would you be against it? Waiting for the Incinerator Authority to paint over anything could take weeks. I live it the Heights and paint over ever bit of tagging I can. I do everything in my power to make my neighborhood nicer to live in and that means painting over this constant tagging. It's people like you who complain and do nothing that are the scourge of our city. Have them arrested? What an idiot. Try to stop me from not painting over it and you'll get punched in the face. Get a life...jeez.

If it were my property, I'd gladly do it myself but who wants the liability of having me climb up on a roof with a spray can? If we have a city department for these issues why is it so hard to get them to clean it up? I'd also love to paint new stop sign lines at jersey and York but I'm sure that would cause more harm than good. Who would be next up the chain after Candice to get a response on this?

There is graffiti along the top sidewall of 71 Bright St that I've reported to the incineration authority numerous times. I've also followed up with councilwoman Osborne, but nothing has been done. Any advice on what other steps I can take to get this small area cleaned up?
