ran the waterfront from Newport to Hoboken this weekend. Things are pretty clean, just got to avoid the puddles and random dog poop people have been leaving around.

I (female as well) have been running to LSP via Jersey Ave bridge early morning with my dog for 8 years and never have had a problem. I don't run with music though so that I can pay attention to what is going on around me.

I (female) run this route often, over the foot bridge. I've never had a problem, although if it's very early in the morning, I carry pepper spray. The abandoned buildings on Aetna Dr can be creepy. Other times of the day, there are usually people around.

My wife walks the dog there regularly. It's as safe as anywhere in JC, probably safer. May want to avoid streets around LSP light rail station though.

Having run both areas lately, I have to differ. LSP has not been plowed well, so limited trails are open. The only time this winter the pedestrian bridge was shoveled was before the Super Bowl kick-off concert. Worse, there are huge puddles everywhere. Practically ponds. LSP has terrible drainage, and the trails aren't banked correctly so they puddle-up easily. Your shoes will be soaked.

The waterfront is the only part of town I've seen that's shoveled well. Running there right now is clear and easy.

I am currently out of town, so my opinion is based on past experience. During winter months, I have always found LSP to be well plowed after all snowfalls. The last time I went running in LSP a few weeks ago (about two or three days after some heavy snow) the paths along Freedom Way and Audrey Zapp were perfectly clear, with occasional icy patches (which is to be expected as snow/ice melts and refreezes). Overall, my vote for a "safe" run in JC during Winter is definitely LSP.

I usually don't go running along the waterfront after a snow storm because it can't be plowed (on the boards) south of the mall and it gets icy. I do go to LSP and went Sunday night - most of the walkway along the water is plowed, but there are some spots where it isn't so it's icy, but for the most part it's OK. As you go south by the picnic area/flag memorial and south along the water toward the golf course it hasn't been plowed - snow is still almost a foot deep. The path along Freedom Way is plowed from end to end but there were a few patches that were icy.

Also, if you have the right sneakers and socks, running in the snow (if not icy) is a great workout - works a lot of the stabilizer muscles that don't get worked out during a "normal" run - it's definitely tougher, but worth it.

Hi,

I've not ventured out for a run since the snow started, but now that it's melting and we have a warm stretch, I want to.

Can anyone report on how the surface is along the waterfront (I usually go from the mall to Hoboken and back) or in LSP? Untouched by plows? Clear? Etc.

Thanks,

Laura
