We actually got our subway tiles at Kennedy Tiles for $1.75 / sq ft. Looks great on the wall!

The only manufacturer I know of that makes true subway tile is www.subwaytiles.com.
Warning: these are not cheap. However, they are the true, rectified full depth subway tiles. No built in spacers, no bevels, the real deal.

Yeah, I'd say. Grout doesn't stay white very well on the floor. If he can't get them clean with nippers he should pull them off the mat and use the wet saw.

Question for the experts: we're laying small (really mini-sized) hexagon marble tiles on our shower floor, along with a square drain. The cuts on the hexagon around the drain are really jagged, but the contractor keeps telling me "it's ok, because with white grout, you won't be able to see the difference." The hexagon are white / light greying, like this.
Is he giving me BS?

Probably depends on what you're getting. "Subway" means a rectangular dimension, and can come in everything from white glazed ceramic to marble or glass. If you mean classic white, I would just get the cheap white ceramic, my downstairs bathroom is about 65 years old and the basic square white ceramic tile looks fine. For any tile purchase, note the lot number, even in fine porcelain there can be color variation between lots.

Question for your pros - are all subway tiles created the same? I mean, should I just look for the cheapest price, or there are differences between the ones I can buy from Home Depot vs Standard Tiles and/or other places?
Thanks in advance!

Can you post a pic? I use "platinum gray" on the floors, but was nervous how it would look on white subway tile walls. Walls don't get nearly as nasty as floors.

Recently tore out an ugly tub and built a shower stall from scratch. Subway tiles on 3 walls and I used Grey grout instead of white. Looks great IMHO, and less chance of staining over the years with white grout. Floor was dark grey tile with the same grout.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have finished all my shopping, unfortunately I could not get everything local but got some of it local.
I went with an unfinished marble from Jerusalem for the shower and bath. I was able to purchase this from Herod Stone here in JC, For the floor I went with a American porcelain which I was originally against but its lovely. The negative it had to be special ordered from the Home Depot Super store in Union. The back-splashes I got in NYC from a great store called Grand Tile Corp I chose Italian porcelain. This was a real headache getting it home via subway, lightrail and Path but it was so worth it. Thanks again! Now I have to begin putting it all together Happy New year!

SRhia, check out this basketweave floor pattern from HD, when I was doing our bath I couldn't find it in porcelain, only marble. A friend in a prewar on Central Park W has this on the floor of her historic white subway tile bath, I loved it.

That's what we did in our bathroom reno. Old school. I don't like to see fancy travertine and or granite baths in old buildings, I love the subway tiles and details like basket weave floor tiles you find in the intact old places. We did details like a strip of black at about 4 ft with a ogee molding above. I like old fashioned pinwheel tile on the floor

Kinda of related: We're re-doing our shower and is thinking of getting white subway tiles for the 3 walls (glass door on 4th side). Anyone has feedback on pros / cons? Thinking of using white grout in between for a complete white look. Still deciding what to do with the shower floor.
TIA, and Happy New Year!!!

Fair nuff. I love the "jet printed" stone look porcelain from that place for kitchen backsplashes in rentals. Looks like natural stone @ like $2 sq ft, easy to install. The pic below has a granite tile counter too. Again, maybe not top choice in your home, but great in a rental.

Someone already said it, Standard Tile on the Blvd
There is also World of Tile on Route 22 W in Springfield just past Guitar Center. This place has new old stock. Great if you have an old tile to match.

Thanks! I really want slate, I am not a fan of porcelain in my home I prefer a natural stone.
I think porcelain is fine for apt living. So far I am not having any luck with light colored slate and would even settle for Travertine as long is its not made in China. After the New Year I plan to check all these places out. Thanks again!!

If you shoot down Communipaw into Newark, that stretch has a bunch of tile places. I don't know prices or names, sorry about that, but there is a ton of places for contracting materials.

We just tiled our bathrooms and used:
1) The Tile Shop Rochelle Park 2) Best Tile East Brunswick 732-390-6662 Kinda far but we like what we saw in the showrooms....especially for the Tile Shop. Helped us to visualize what the entire bathroon would look like. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I will check out Standard. I did call Mosaic and actually got a hold of someone and the location on Pacific street is just a distribution center where you can pick up your order it is not a showroom. Thanks again.

There is a big tile store on JFK Blvd in the Heights and one on 1/9 as well. You can call Complete Tile @42 W15 Street - 212-255-4450 to see if they have slate, I'm not sure.

Hi All!
I am looking for light colored slate tiles, I am remolding my master bath and having a hard time finding light colored slate tiles. I have been to Home Depot and Lowes at 440 and also the Lowes in Bayonne and everyone seems to have dark slate. Is there any place else I should try locally? I am afraid to order online due to slate being so fragile and my may break during shipping. Also is Mosaic Tile Direct on Pacific street open to the public? Thanks in advance.
