It happened to me. I was taking a break from moving my things from one rented room to another (only 5 houses away from each other) and received an important text. I bypassed returning to my old room and walked down 4th. I turned around (still texting) and was headed back toward Manila when my arm and hand were hit hard by an attacker who came from behind.

There were two teens, one stayed a few feet back while the other one bent down to get my phone, which had flown a couple of feet out of my hand. As he stood back up I grabbed him by his quilted navy-blue vest at the arm hole. I was already shouting at him to give me my phone back. He hit me in the arm to make me let go, broke loose, and followed his friend, who had already started running, down 4th toward Erie.

They ran down Erie toward 5th with me in pursuit---screaming at the top of my lungs for someone to stop them. They ran by the convenience store at the corner of 5th and Erie and headed east up 5th to the daycare center. I chased them until I got to the corner of 5th and Manila, where a few good samaritans had joined the chase, but these kids were fast and seemed to already have their route thought out?disappeared into the corridor that leads to the daycare center, took a right and probably went out on Marin.

And, if any of the wonderful people who tried to help me read this: THANK YOU!

I was shaken, mildly bruised and in shock. because i have lived on Manila and walked in the area for over a year. I usually don't text while walking and recognize this vulnerable behavior as just that. However, I no longer feel safe and am constantly looking over my shoulder and am easily startled when I hear footsteps approaching from behind.

Since that night, I have spoken to eight women who I've seen walking after sunset with their phones out, and told them what happened so they would be forewarned.

I spent over an hour with the JC police that night, who actually detained two kids off the Light Rail at Liberty State Park stop, but I could not positively ID them.

To all. Just be careful. do not walk with phones out at night, or find an escort or walking buddy or use Manila, which, at this point I think is safer than Erie, better lit and a bit less deserted, usually.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I'm glad people were there to help. The bodega people also came out the night I witnessed the other attack, must be a weekly occurrence for them.

No, it wasn't reported anywhere. I only know about it because I was walking about half a block in front on the lady when she was attacked. I've heard nothing about it so I figured I would post to warn people. Seems us ladies are walking around with a false sense of security given how often this happens and is never reported anywhere. Do not walk distracted, walk with purpose and with all your senses in alert.Quote:

Sucks to hear about the muggings, especially when most of downtown has a really safe feel to it. I guess you never know.

How does this happen 2 blocks from the police station?! I live on 7th - very close to the station (unfortunately) and god knows they're ALWAYS outside - standing around, telling crude jokes, cursing, loudly cackling (and constantly waking up my child). Guess if they weren't so busy wasting time they could actually do their jobs.

...might actually be safer than Erie past 10pm. However, be ready for some possible verbal harassment. I've been called a "f*g" on several occasions while on/near Manila (regardless of time of day), which is kind of funny - mostly because I'm not gay (I'm married with a kid, constantly chino-clad, and drive an old Subaru - just to give you an idea : ). I'm wondering if there is just one group of guys that go up and down Manila calling every man that walks by a "f*g". I wonder what they choose to call females that happen to be passing by...

Erie has been Mugger Alley lately. I think Manila is a safer bet, if only for the higher density of car and foot traffic.

I may have been giving in to hyperbole, but there's this: http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... d=329444&keywords=mugging
plus a friend got jumped at Erie and 5th recently, so I guess it's a little more scary to me than it oughta be.

You're 4 blocks from the downtown precinct station there. Even if the section 8 folks there can at first seem a bit sketchy to whitebread suburban-raised people like me, they're harmless. Between proximity to the PATH, ShopRite, and the burgeoning downtown restaurant row, that is an excellent spot.

Lol, that's fine. Probably some 'projects' are bad. At least this one on Manila Ave seems ok according to the feedback:)

Lol, thanks for the tips. I like the location too. The house is right on the corner of 3rd St and Manila Ave cross. So only 1 block away from Shoprite.

I've heard the crazy race game happened on Manila Ave. As there is a paving going on the Manila Ave, I guess things could get worse:(

Thank you all. The location is good, just 1 block from Shoprite, 3 blocks from Grove St path. Without safety issue, it's pretty much the suitable place for us:)

LOL.. what part of Manila. ave is dangerous and unsafe? I would rather worry about the crazy out of town drivers buzzing through to get to Holland Tunnel.

Living by 1st street, I would walk right through the development to get to Shoprite, every other day, even late at night (Shoprite closes at 12am) best short cut ever!! Always safe like most part of Downtown J.C. just be smart and aware at all times. Like any other city.

That area is fine, I can't recall any recent safety issues related to the low income housing. I've walked through that development to the mall a lot of times, even late at night and never felt the slightest bit unsafe.

Thank you so much for your info, Vigi:) I just worry about my wife, sometimes she work late. We've considered living in Newport area, but the rent there is very high.

That area is fine. Lots of foot traffic at all hours. There have been incidents involving the residents of the low income housing in the past. The most recent I remember was a group of men hanging out there and yelling anti-gay slurs at a couple that was walking by. All in all it's much better than most city "projects".

Hi, everyone. My wife and I are planning to move to downtown jersey city. We find a room in Manila Ave at 3rd St. It's close to Shoprite and Newport Mall.

However, there are low incoming housing just on the opposite side of Manila Ave. I've found out that it's a government project, a total of 48 low-income units from 400 to 432 Manila Ave.

As we will go to grove street path everyday, maybe Newport Mall on the weekend, could anyone tell me if Manila Ave area safe?

Thank you!
