Any update on this project? I live near by and noticed that the road has been paved. They have cones blocking the way.

Looks like the new staircase leading to Paterson Plank road will open soon from Mountain rd. Now waiting for New York ave construction to finish so my commute on my bicycle will be shorter.

I believe you used to be able to walk down from Riverview Park - a few summers ago, before they fenced off the cobble street, friends and I followed the stairs down to Patterson Plank Road. You can see an old postcard and current photos here - The Heights of Jersey City

I've yet to find out if there was a pedestrian path from Paterson Plank Road to Hoboken - fellow history buffs? Still, your point is well taken - the Heights used to be well connected by various modes of transportation to Hoboken, and could still be!

Riverview Park is right above the Hoboken Housing Projects. Not the best choice to be walking through.

The advantage of restoring the stairway in the location of the original 100 steps is that you can get to the 2nd Street Light Rail Station (not easily, as the cross-walks are across the tracks).

I walk by this nearly every day, and am happy to see it is very nearly open - lawn seeded, light posts in place. For other history buffs, here is a link to a site with photos of the historic 100 Steps: MaggieBlanck.com

I remember reading about this a while back. AS a Heights residents I so fucking wish they could bring something like this back. Even though Hoboken is so close it always feels like a drag to get to.

The 100 steps will be 100 times safer than Mountain Road. A lot of sketchy dudes hang out in the middle of the U-- one spot on the road down (right near the mid-part) covered by foliage that's particulary dangerous. During the day it seems fine and well-travelled I would not walk it after dark. The stairs will be well-lit and probably patrolled and are right by the Cliffs. I'm happy about it because I think it will cause the riff raff on Mt. Road to scatter somewhere else.

As i understand it is a restoration project...back in the day there were the original 100 steps, constructed sometime in the 30's I believe. As it goes, they were left untended and destroyed in I believe the late 80's early 90's. RNA (riverviewneighborhood.com) has been trying for at least 5 years to get the restoration to occur. They worked with the builder of The Cliffs building to finance the restoration, the reneged, the city also shit the bed on their part ... then they finally stepped in as well as the state.

I for one am looking forward to it's completion. I traverse that road on my bike on a near daily basis and look forward to being able to exercise via the stairs. Not to mention being able to walk to Northern Soul a bit easier :)

Can someone explain the purpose of the 100 steps project to me? When I first heard about it, I assumed it would connect a the heights to hoboken in a place where it wasn't already connected. The elevator at 9th Street-Congress Street accomplished that at one end of town. To me this new project will save about 2 minutes walking time by allowing people to go up stairs rather than a slightly longer hill-there is already a perfectly walkable road. I think we Heights residents would have been better served by a stairway by riverview park or Christ Hospital where there isn't already a convenient connection. I also doubt that older or disabled folks will be able to traverse 100 steps much more easily than the hill. Any insight? Am I missing something?

The stairs look great. Now let's see about them getting the road finished and open.

Nice to hear this is getting done, the 2 projects should give a little bump to values along the Palisade corridor below Riverview Park.

Per one of the construction workers, they'll be finished within a week.

Understandable, but seeing workers there and the workers actually WORKING and the project progressing aren't always one and the same.

Well, the JJ just reported the other day about the groundbreaking for the 100 steps. Worked may have picked up in the last week or so. But it has finally moved along.

Wow news to me it's been long over due. That road was littered with debris, strewn with garbage bags, dumping, and a horrible surface to drive upon. I just used it last week about 4 times usually just travelling from the Heights but am done with that mission. Good to know though.

I am glad that road is being refurbished, given the tank-trap like potholes and that lake at the bottom that forms during heavy rains.

However, it will be a PITA considering that is the road I use to head to Home Depot and the A&P. It is a nice bypass from the traffic hell that forms via Rt 139 down to the tunnel.

Here is more info from the RNA Newsletter:

Construction Notices!

New York Ave (Ravine Road) will close for construction/renovation on April 8th. Ravine connects the Heights to Hoboken (by the Galaxy recycling plant). The renovation will widen the road at the curve, remove the "dip" and improve sidewalks, lighting and landscaping. The road will be closed for the duration of the project. The contract runs for 9 months but it is in the best interest of the contractor to finish as quickly as possible.

The 100 Steps project is also slated to start on or about April 8th along Mountain Road (base of Franklin/Hope St and connects to Paterson Plank Road). There are no expected road closures next week but there will be some during construction (we will have about 2 days notice on these). Pedestrian access is to remain open with few exceptions.

With construction, everything is subject to change. We will post construction schedule updates on our Facebook page. Please like our page or check it frequently (it is public) for updates.

While it's a huge PITA for me, I'm glad to see it taken on. I actually just drove Mountain Rd for the 1st time ever this week, and was shocked at how sweet it was compared to the 3rd world condition of New York Ave. I doubt NY can be completed by election, what about the huge dip at the bottom?!!

So they are expected to finish by the election, but what is the plan? They had previously removed the guardrails and fencing along the side of the road, not necessarily something they would do for a simple repaving.

The timeline is to finish it by the election. They also started digging at the bottom of Mountain road. I assume that is for the 100 steps project. We should just have an election every year.

Does anyone know the story with the closure of the portion of New York Ave. that connects the Heights with Hoboken? I drove by the other day and it was closed off with temporary C.L. fencing. I assume/hope they are repairing the pavement, and I'd like to know who is performing the work and what the timeline is(Timeline, ha!). I also wonder what the general plan is.

This road has been one of the worst roads in town for years, and I'm glad to see it is getting some attention.

Any insight?
