So lets not spend any money on ourselves and give it to others in need. Hey lets earn what third world countries earn and give the rest to the government and let them spread the graft. This sounds like communist thinking.

The mentality on jclist is that the victim is in the wrong and shouldn't wear expensive things because you know, we can all get robbed at any time. That mentality is utterly stupid.

Your implication is that my fiance loves me less or is less committed because he (at my request) didn't spend a fortune on my ring. I hope if you marry that the person places the same premium on material displays of love that you do. Not being sarcastic. We should all marry people who agree with our values and are willing to forgo vacations or new cars for jewelry if need be (or go into debt to have all three...or be part of the 1% who can actually afford all that in cash).

I do agree about victim blaming but the thing with a ring is that you can also misplace it or lose it while swimming. A ring over say 2K should probably be insured against those kinds of losses.

Really? You're arguing about what other people choose to spend on engagement rings? A new low.

You have a point. Hopefully they had the sense to insure the ring and/or the little prick returned it, although the story said that no ring was actually recovered.

Kanye bought a 500k engagement ring. Cheap is relative. A 25k engagement ring would be laughable to him.

$500,000 for a ring is laughable to me, doesn't matter who is spending the money. Kanye can do what he wants with his money, but if I had as much as him, I wouldn't be spending that much on an engagement ring. It's just ludicrous to me. Call me cheap.

wow. I'm sry, a 12k engagement ring is CHEAP. 12k rings are for anniversaries. engagement rings should cost 20k+ at least.

Either this post is satire or the diamond industry has really got you by the balls.

My engagement ring cost $1200. Yes that's the price of the ring in the article minus a zero. It only cost that much because diamonds and platinum are super durable and I'd destroy anything less so with my clumsiness. It's lasted since the 20s in perfect condition so hopefully it will last a few more generations.

I don't want any more $$ on my finger than I'd be willing to lose in a mugging, in the ocean, etc. The "diamond as status symbol" reflects a set of values I don't relate to whatsoever.

Thank you!!! I couldn't agree more. Spending five figures on an engagement ring or any kind of jewelry for that matter is just insane, no matter how much money you make a year. The rest of this forum can call me a cheap bastard if they want, but I'd like to retire someday and have no mortgage.

A relative of mine spent something like 15K on the ring, well guess what he is now getting divorced and he's not even 30 and without a prenup he cannot recoup any of the cost of the ring. Which sucks since he's also upside down on the house he bought with his now ex-wife. Even 7k would help him buy a reliable car instead of the beater he's stuck driving because the divorce wiped him out.

I'm not joking. But yet again, I don't live in an area where I have to plan my life around muggings so I guess that's different.

An engagement ring symbolizes the love between two people and a long lasting commitment. That is why it costs so much. Personally, that commitment should cost more than a car or a vacation....but who am I to judge?

I also think it's about 3-4 months of salary.....so at 1200/3 = 400..in any case.

I was being somewhat satirical in judging the person who said the ring should cost 120 and who was chastising the OP who spent 12000 on a ring and got it STOLEN.

The mentality on jclist is that the victim is in the wrong and shouldn't wear expensive things because you know, we can all get robbed at any time. That mentality is utterly stupid.

My engagement ring was a cubic zirconia. My fianc? and I were broke and I thought it utterly ridiculous to spend money on a rock. The joke was on everyone else that thought it was real - it was quite an impressive fake. I think we spent about $100 on it at the time at Macy's.

Fifteen years later, I wear my "upgraded" wedding ring that cost a bit over $1000 on special occasions. When I think of what $20K can do to help the world, and I see that on someone's finger, I get a bit nauseous.

Well, it wasn't a diamond ring, that's for sure. The JJ said that the "7.5 carat ring" was recovered.

Engagement rings shouldn't cost anything, they should be inherited. They might be worth 12K, however.

A 12k ring is pretty standard size for the NYC area engagement rings. It's probably about 2 cts, which is about what professional yuppies working in NYC women have on their hands. Not outrageous at all. And yes, I know some of you will rail and rail and say that it's ridiculous etc. maybe it is, but again, every woman in NYC I knew while we were all getting engaged had rings that were 1.5 to 2 cts.

Lots of people wear $12,000 engagement rings. What do you think engagement rings cost?

Jerry DeMarco

A woman told police a man who walked up and asked her for money in a Jersey City parking lot walked off with her $12,000 diamond engagement ring after putting his hand on hers.

The 36-year-old Jersey City woman ? apparently not realizing the ring was missing until he was gone ? notified Port Authority Police after the 11:30 p.m. incident Sunday at the authority Technical Center on Erie Street.

Using her description of the man, Port Authority police identified 47-year-old Chris Ingram of Jersey City, who already was being held in the Hudson County Jail on another charge, the authority?s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The 5-foot-6, 150-pound Ingram is charged with theft. The ring apparently hadn?t been recovered.
