Good for them. It's great to see people get a chance at life after paying their dues.

Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
Martin's Place, the city's prisoner re-entry and jobs program, has released a video touting its efforts to bring jobs to ex-convicts. Cocoa Bakery, the Downtown Jersey City caf? and bakery located on Grand Street, has hired three former offenders through Martin's Place, the Martin Luther King Drive office of the Jersey City Employment and Training Program, run by former Gov. Jim McGreevey. "It's working out really well," Cocoa Bakery owner Jessica Isaacs says in the nearly three-minute video. "It's a really nice experience." Full Story

we're regular customers at the HP Farmer's market on Wednesdays. My 13 year old is has to get her weekly allotment of cupcakes - and she, along with my wife and elder daughter proclaims the best Scones they've ever tasted

I tried a couple of their cake truffles that they were selling in Tachair bookstore and they were so good! I'll try to make it to their grand opening party on Sunday.

They have the best coffee cake I've ever had. I'm glad they were able to stick it out and finally open their store, it's been a long time coming.

One year after Sandy delayed opening, Jersey City bakery finally in business
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal A Downtown Jersey City bakery that saw its grand opening delayed when Hurricane Sandy left six feet of water in the store one year ago finally opened its doors last week, and its owners are planning an all-day celebration this weekend. Cocoa Bakery is located in a basement shop a few blocks east of the Jersey City Medical Center, in an area hard hit by last October?s storm. Jessica Isaacs, owner and executive pastry chef, said she still can?t quite believe that after four years of planning, her first bakery is a reality. ?It?s very exciting. It?s very nerve-wracking,? Isaacs said. ?I get a little nervous whenever it?s slow ? but we have a lot of kinks to work out.? READ MORE

It is on Grand Street just south of Barrow. They had quite a bit of foot traffic today already. Nice truffles indeed...

They are in the Heights on Sundays....cake truffles are completely insanely out of this world! They also serve a good cup of coffee.

First off, the cake truffles are out of this world good. Last year, the owner (I believe her name is Jess) would only do Hamilton Parks farmers market. I went out of my way to be there every Wednesday for my truffles. Now that she's at VV and Grove St (on Thursday), I'm already anticipating significant weight gain this summer. But they're damn good.
I asked her recently about the storefront and she mentioned they were getting towards the finish line. Sounded like it would only be a few weeks (and I asked a couple weeks back). She'll do we'll when they finally do open up.

They have baked goods at the Grove St Farmers market and they're very good. I actually prefer them to Choc-O-Pain.

Is this place opening soon? I walked by a few weeks ago and there was a lot of activity inside. The decor looked like it was gonna be sorta Brooklyn-y. Nice.

Judging by how busy Choc O Pain has been, it seems that there are enough people that think the product is worth what is being charged. Regarding your point, it costs more to live in the JC neighborhood that the place is in than it costs to live in at least 50% of NYC.

Jessie will be baking some breads, not sure about the brioche, though. I think croissants are on the menu, as well.

not like that new bakery on Jersey- Choc-O-Pain. Love the look of the place, but prices=SERIOUSLY? Are they aware of surroundings but choose to ignore? Not too late to change. JC is NOT NYC!

We are getting close to opening.
The interior lighting is nearly done, the bathroom has been fixed, the sign has been ordered and should be ready in a few days. We need to install a few sinks and water lines (haven't settled on a plumber yet), and have to order some equipment, put some fresh paint on the walls, etc. Once the plumbing work is done, the rest is easy work to do... So our fingers are crossed.

If you guys make real whole grain wheat bread and brioche...you will get my support. Also, a fair non-nyc price would help too. :)

Cocoa's construction started in 2008, and when the economy swooned, investors scattered and it became very challenging to raise the capital needed for the original plan of opening a bakery/cafe and adjacent restaurant.
Now, with some grass roots fund raising with Cocoa Club, we're focusing on getting the bakery side open, construction is ongoing but we are being held up a bit by the City over a permit for plumbing relating to a bathroom needed in the space. We'll try to get all the work done other than the bathroom ASAP, but it's anyone's guess how long it will take for the City to come for the inspection. We put updates up on Twitter and our two facebook pages, and there's the website as well. In the interim, we're a regular at the Hamilton Park Farmer's Market every Wednesday.

What is/was the challenge? Getting enough money, or getting past the JC building department?

I ordered a cake from Cocoa's this wekend, and it was excellent. It was a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and cookie crunch in the middle. The cake was extremely moist, and the frosting was smooth, and full of flavor. All six of my friends were in agreement that it was a hit!

This Saturday (9/25), it looks like Cocoa Bakery will be in two places at the same time, the Newport Festival and the BBQ Festival in Hamilton Park.
And thanks to Riccardo Kaulessar for his coverage of our COCOA CLUB program. http://www.hudsonreporter.com/view/fu ... on-national-TV-?instance= Please note that the program gives people a bonus on the cards based on what is put in, and the funds go into an escrow account until we hit our goals. Then, once open, the cards can be used. If we go 6 months, starting Sept 1, and don't reach the goal, we give it all back. Thanks Eric Fleming
