The actual debate starts about 10 minutes into the video

I hope people actually watch the video - its unbelievably incriminating.

He basically accepts the money and says the city will put it to good use (im guessing he didnt mean charity where it is supposedly going now ?)

You're kidding, right? He didn't say that, did he?

He was a day late for April Fool's Day. Absolutely incredible.

The DCNA, in conjunction with Civic JC, has been pushing hard to organize a debate/forum for downtown that would take place during the last two weeks of the campaign. Fulop has agreed but the Healy campaign will not commit to it. Probably says all you need to know.

Jersey City mayor, challenger spar in feisty debate at Loew's

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
April 02, 2013 at 5:18 PM

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and mayoral hopeful Ward E City Councilman Steve Fulop sparred for about two hours this afternoon over tax breaks for Waterfront developers, the 2009 massive corruption sweep and whether crime in the city is declining or on the rise.

The two met inside the Landmark Loew?s in Journal Square for the second mayoral forum of the 2013 campaign. It was the first time the two men, longtime political rivals, have met one-on-one to debate city issues, and tensions flared a few times.

Fulop angered Healy, who is seeking his third full term on May 14, about 45 minutes into the debate when he referenced a long-stalled Journal Square twin-towers project that Healy heralded as imminent in the months before the 2009 election.

Healy today said Journal Square was ?a bigger mess? when he was first elected in 2004, to which Fulop responded, ?Those are standards that shouldn?t be acceptable to anybody. You?ve been here eight years.?

READ THE JERSEY JOURNAL LIVE-BLOG OF THE DEBATE

Jerry Walker, the former local basketball star who is also making a run for the city?s top job, pulled out of today?s debate due to illness. Abdul Malik, the fourth mayoral candidate, wasn?t invited to the event, which was moderated by The Jersey Journal?s own Earl Morgan; Pat O?Melia, of Hudson Media Group; and Al Sullivan, of the Hudson Reporter.

Crime came up a few times, with Healy citing statistics showing the city last year had the lowest number of homicides since those records were kept. Fulop noted that the city still saw nearly 2,000 violent crimes last year.

Asked about the 2009 corruption sweep ? which ensnared one of Healy?s deputy mayors, three of his running mates from that year?s election, and a number of city employees ? the mayor defended his actions.

?I was clean,? he said. ?No charges were ever filed against me.?

Fulop, meanwhile, joked that Healy is the "expert" on corruption, and referred to the black-and-white video of Healy, former Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini and corrupt developer Solomon Dwek meeting in March 2009 at a city eatery, a video that was central to Beldini?s case. Beldini, then the Healy campaign treasurer, was convicted in 2010 on bribery charges and is now serving three years in federal prison.

Fulop said he originally wanted to believe the mayor was not involved in corruption ? until he saw the video of his meeting with Dwek.

?To me, it was alarming,? he said, adding that he and the mayor ?have a fundamental disagreement with how corruption is defined.?

In response, Healy urged viewers to watch the entire video of his meeting with Dwek.

?I should have gotten a gold medal for effective, honest, open government for that,? he said.

Today?s debate, attended by about 100 people, was recorded on video. O?Melia said he?s editing the footage now, and it should air sometime in mid-April on Channel 190 on Comcast and online at patsshows.com. He said he?ll announced specific air dates later this week.

The mayoralty and all nine council seats are up for grabs on May 14.

Maybe they wanted to have at least one of the debates be at a time when non 9-5 workers could attend? This one is being recorded and will be televised later so you can still watch it. And there's another debate being held on the 17th at 7:30 at St Peter's University, so there will be another opportunity for you to attend.

You obviously didn't read my post where I said I didn't know why. Wait - you did read it as its the same post where I said its being put on by a private organizer.

Latest tweet - instant classic: "Q from Sullivan to Fulop: define corruption and what is being done about it? Fulop: "I defer to Jerry, he's the expert.'"

Why is it BS? Its open to the public, even though a private organization is hosting/organizing it. See the first article in this thread:

"I'm a private entity, not a public institution," said O'Melia, whose Hudson Media Group is video taping the politicians for future cable casts."

Watching the debate right now. So far the most memorable exchange was when the mayor was responding to a.question about what causes crime in JC. He sited his campaign for gun control and said " every third sixteen year old in JC is packing a hand gun".
Fulop jumped on that comment to defend JC sixteen year olds and was answered with the first applause of the debate.
It reminded me of the brew ha ha over Diane Colman' s comment about everyone in her ward has a criminal record.

Fulop 2 mayor: "You said Journal Square it?s a mess but before I got here it was an uglier mess. Those are standards that shouldn't be acceptable to anybody" LMAO

Fulop on mayor's crack about BOE emails: "It is a gross distortion from a mayor that has more arrests than any in the history of JC.? WOW things are getting heated.

The audience will be filled with city workers on their lunch breaks. The size of the audience is not important for this debate, this debate is suppose to be filmed for the cable networks.

Political Insider: JC mayoral candidate protests being excluded from Loew's Theatre debate

By Agustin C. Torres/The Jersey Journal
April 01, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Jersey City mayoral candidate Abdul Malik is apparently not happy about being left out of tomorrow's political debate at the Landmark Loew's Theatre in Journal Square at 1 p.m.

Malik was thinking about trying to obtain a court injunction to stop the debate. He had his attorney call the man behind the debate, Pat O'Melia, but was unable to change his mind.

"I don't know on what grounds that he thinks he can get an injunction," said O'Melia.
"While he convinced St. Peter's University to allow him to join a forum (hosted by politikernj.com), I'm a private entity, not a public institution," said O'Melia, whose Hudson Media Group is video taping the politicians for future cable casts.

It is more than likely that St. Peter's "suggested" to the website politickernj.com that Malik be invited after the candidate with Pakistani roots said he was being discriminated against. Malik said he was snubbed because "he has strong views about corruption and career politicians and because he is a Muslim American."

And knowing Malik, it was probably followed by an intense telephone call to the St. Peter's administration in which he explained how the university was subverting "equal opportunity and equal rights."

O'Melia said video and studio time is valuable and he doesn't plan to waste much of it with a candidate who has no chance of winning. The two front runners who will be part of the forum are incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Downtown Councilman Steven Fulop.

The cable TV producer is finding out how tenacious the underdog candidate may be. Malik called him and O'Melia said the word "stupid" was used several times.

"I was very nice and professional with him," Malik told the Insider by phone. "He said he was offended (by the press release). What I said to him was 'that you are a stupid person' in the sense, that the release was a carefully crafted as to not to offend."

If anything, Malik said it was O'Melia who had made comments at the start of a three-way telephone conversation -- when O'Melia was unaware Malik was on the line -- that the candidate said he found offensive. O'Melia, no!

Previously, O'Melia had even thought about not inviting candidate "Jerry" Walker, founder of Team Walker, because he believes the youth recreation and social services advocate also has little chance at victory. O'Melia reconsidered because Walker's candidacy could have enough of an impact on the election that could determine the winner.

Will Malik protest at the Loew's?

"I don't want to create trouble for myself or anyone," he said. "I will be outside (the Loew's) on the sidewalk greeting people."

O'Melia requested several members of Jersey City's finest be present, just as they were when uninvited mayoral candidate Al Pine showed up to protest and crash the Loew's debate in the 2005 race. Pine -- "the only tree in the election," he liked to say -- was escorted out of the theater.

By the way, the event is free. It's bound to have plenty of county and municipal employees attending on their lunch hours ;) why should they get all the fun.

POLITICAL INSIDER

Press release

From the campaign office of Abdul Malik

We have found out that Loew's Theater and Saint Peter's University are hosting a debate between mayoral candidates, but the organizers have excluded our candidate, Abdul Malik, which is very disturbing and unfair. It's against the ethical rules, fair trial and fair treatment and against equal opportunity and equal rights.

The organizers of the debates should also keep in mind that they carry nonprofit status and can't DISCRIMINATE any one on the basis of his ethnicity, color of skin and or religious believes. This practice may terminate their status as a nonprofit organization.

Furthermore, it sends a wrong signal out to the world that we the Americans, who champion Human rights and equal opportunity and equal rights are not willing to give same rights to its minority because he has strong views about corruption and career politicians and because he is a Muslim American.

We condemn this attitude and demand that Mr. Malik's name should be included in the debate, so that voters of Jersey City should get a chance to listen to him and be able to compare what he has to offer them with what other candidate have in their bag.

Jersey City mayoral candidates to meet for second debate

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
April 01, 2013 at 12:28 PM

Three of the four Jersey City mayoral candidates will meet tomorrow afternoon in Journal Square for the second candidates forum of the 2013 campaign.

Incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy is seeking his third full term on May 14, when the mayoralty and all nine City Council seats are up for grabs. His challengers include Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop and Jerry Walker, the former local basketball star who now runs a popular afterschool program.

Abdul Malik is also running for the city?s top job, but he wasn?t invited to participate in tomorrow?s debate.

The debate may end up being a one-on-one: a rep with Walker's campaign said illness may force him to skip the event.

Tomorrow?s moderators will be The Jersey Journal?s own Earl Morgan; Pat O?Melia, of Hudson Media Group; and Al Sullivan, of the Hudson Reporter.

The forum begins at 1 p.m. at the Landmark Loews, 54 Journal Square.
