Veterinarians are not paid nearly as well as they should: they go through the same amount of schooling as a medical doctor (4 years undergrad, plus 4 - 5 years vet school) and some vets continue to get even more education for specialties (ob-gyn care, oncology, etc) and they also have continuing education requirements. I know a few vets with school loans of over 250K. Yet, they seldom get paid over 6 figures unless they have a ton of experience and/or specialties. Starting salaries are low considering the amount of schooling required of them (~60K). Now, having said that, I can't speak to the specifics of the various places where she has been employed. I know MetroVet closed briefly, then changed hands but kept the original name, and later on underwent the name change. When they re-opened, it was fairly annoying to find out that the practice was only the same in name only: they didn't even buy the client records from the previous owners. We only found out when our cat needed to be put to sleep and so we called to see Dr. Hansen only to find out about the change in doctors and because our cat was a "new" patient we were required to "start anew". Rather than roll the dice with the new practice, we chose to switch to Secaucus Animal Hospital for all of our needs. I find it baffling that someone would buy an established practice and not buy the patient records as part of the deal. In any case, 100% agreed with Sully that Dr. Hansen is a rock star when it comes to veterinary care: straight shooter, great personality, and super caring about her patients.

One of the takeaways from this thread is that if you find a particular veterinarian you really like and trust, your best bet is to follow her to whichever business employs her.
Dr. Hansen is a great example. We first met Holly when she was working for a different mobile vet service, and we needed help treating a feral cat in a colony we were managing. She went above and beyond the call of duty in that case, and earned our respect, admiration, and trust. She gets it, and will always try to find the most effective treatment for your pet, and never try to sell you a bunch of BS you don?t need. I?m not knowledgeable about that business (except as a consumer) but the fact that a star vet like Dr. Hansen, with a bunch of loyal clients, has had to change jobs several times over the last few years (from that mobile vet, to MetroVet, to Secaucus, to her current gig at Vet Dispatch) makes me think the economics might be fishy in that world. I?d love to hear more if an insider can speak to it.

My gang has had consistently great care with Dr. Buchholtz at JC Animal Hospital on Westside.
Even though I live a block away from Downtown Vet, I had one too many unpleasant experiences with Dr. Tudor to even consider going back. It's worth the time and the expense (of a Lyft or Zipcar) to haul my crew all the way over to Westside.

The most recent change in ownership happened around 2016. That's when we switched to Secaucus Animal Hospital, and we haven't looked back. You need a car to get there (or, I suppose, a sympathetic Uber/Lyft driver willing to drive you and your pet) but definitely worth it.

I completely rescind this review! Since 2013 they have changed ownership and I would not send any animal I cared about there. Same goes for Club Barks.

MetroVet was our previous veterinary clinic during its first incarnation. We dealt with a LOVELY veterinarian (Dr. Holly Hansen) that was super caring and attentive of our two elderly cats. Unfortunately, the practice was shuttered briefly and we still needed a vet during that period, so we switched to Secaucus Animal Hospital. We are huge fans of Dr. Hatch now. His practice was incredibly supportive throughout the process of deciding to put our cats to sleep (one in late 2016, and the second one in late 2017) and we would highly recommend him. Dr. Hansen is now part of a practice that makes house calls. If we had a need for a vet to make a house call, we would also heartily recommend her.

I have no experience with Metrovet, but should I ever want to change I'll keep that in mind.
I've been quite pleased with Downtown Vet (1st St.). They have lots of vets and while you don't have to stick with one, if you or your pet has a favorite it's easy to call in and find out when he/she will be in next. Plus they take walk-ins and mid-week I've never experienced more than a 10 minute wait. I was quite unhappy with the vet on West Side. They kept improperly diagnosing a problem with my pet's paw - which ok I get it, some things are hard to diagnose - but basically refused to consider other causes or treatments even though what we were doing wasn't improving his paw. (That's when we went to Downtown vet and the paw situation has been fine ever since.)

My wife and I finally found a local veterinarian in JC who we're really comfortable with, and I just wanted to pass along a recommendation. Veterinaire Pet Care at 25 Senate Place.
Dr Julie was so helpful and took the time to explain everything to us when our cat was having some issues (happy to say he's back to 100% now). The place is new and VERY clean. They really do have great customer service as well. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good local option.

Another +1 for Metrovet. My pup goes to Club Barks for daycare a couple times a week and its nice to have a vet onsite. And people aren't overhyping Dr. Girard. She's that good. My experiences at Downtown Vet were always hit or miss dependent upon the vet I got so its nice to have a dedicated vet.

a HUGE +1 to Metrovet, located within the Club Barks daycare.
The prices are great (they don't try to gauge you) and the veterinary care is second to none. I could not recommend this vet enough.

Dr. Gerard at Metrovet
201 Marin Blvd #2a Jersey City, NJ 07302 (201) 589-0838 Excellent service and cheaper than the other vets in the DTJC area. Plus if you want to board your pet, they also work with Club barks since their offices are connected.

I've used Dr. Tuder since I moved to JC in 06. Never had an issue with them, except typically long waits on weekends, but that's par for the course/

+1 I used the grant money that was given to zip code 07305, not sure what my share of the cost was, but it was less than 100 bucks, and they were amazing.

Westside Animal Hospital has done ok by me and my three cats (one deceased).
Like most veterinary practices, they will suggest maximal treatment. However, all you need to do is ask and they will explain the different options, with no pushback when you trim the charges you don't think are necessary. The vets and all attending the animals have a good bedside manner. Animal Hospital of Jersey City, 603 West Side Ave.

I found the above reference in searching for a Vet. Just took our 6 mo old goldendoodle for neutering at PFA. Totally agree with bodhipooh, we had great experience with PFA. We are very happy with our regular vet, Secaucus Animal Hospital, however felt $700+ for neutering was bit overpriced. When I read about PFA and how they are neutering/spaying specialists and they are affordable we cancelled our dog's neutering appt at Secaucus and signed up at PFA Hillside. They were having a march madness event where neutering and spaying cost was less than $100. Great experience and great deal. For more info check out http://www.pfaonline.org/hillside-nj/ I have used the services of Downtown Vet on 1st St., Hoboken Vet on Adams and on Washington, Tribeca Vet, and animal medical center in NYC (for two knee ACL surgeries) for my previous dog.

West Side also wanted $700 to spay a female kitten, but they are more affordable than Downtown Vets IMO.

webmaster please feel free to move this to thread that discusses this topic - I couldn't find it in my search.
I'm seeking a reputable vet for my pet. I seem to recall a thread that discussed the good ones aren't in downtown Jersey City (and I agreed based on my experiences of upselling attempts).

I am reading this thread & it is truly sad. For many years I used Dr. Gabe Tudor, the uncle. Taught me how to give shots. Nice man. Mike Tudor is about my age & I have known him quite awhile. I stopped going to him years ago because he is now all about the money.
I have heard nothing but good things about Secaucus. I use Dr. Fowler at Banfield in Secaucus for about 7 years. I have both my dog & cat on a wellness plan. I don't pay for office visits, discounts on procedures, comprehensive exams twice a year. They have no problems writing scripts for your pet. Bertha, my dog, has a thyroid problem & her pills cost $.45 each through Banfield but only $.15 through Pet Meds. I have had few problems with them. The downside is the wait. This particular location tends to be busy. And sometimes there is a procedure they do not perform but will refer you.

I had Dr. Tudor's doctors tell me my pet needed a tooth cleaning for $750. I researched and compared and it really felt like they were being beyond alarmists and I started my pet on oral care food. They also didn't seem to think it was a big deal putting an animal under for the service. I asked if I could do more preventative care as opposed to putting my pet through that. I felt a little "had" and haven't taken my pet there since.

My vet is a drive, Dr. Zalis in Union City, but she is so respectful and experienced that I've been seeing her for 13 years.
http://www.unioncityanimalclinic.com/ The prices and respect for pet owners are so much better than Downtown JC which I had to go to once when my dog couldn't climb in my car. Thankfully, I've never had to do that again.

Oh, that's terrible. When my dog had a cyst on her backside, Dr. Green at Westside recommended removing it while my dog was under for her teeth cleaning. She also said they could do a biopsy, though she suspected it was benign. I asked for an itemized list of what everything would cost, and decided to have the cyst removed but not do the biopsy. The response was, "Okay, so we'll go ahead and just remove it then." They didn't give me a hard time at all. They seem to understand that vet care is very expensive for most people, and most people really do care about their pets.

ugh. THIS. I spent thousands and thousands at Downtown, and when I questioned the necessity of a particularly pricey blood test, Dr. Tudor himself looked at me and said, "well, if you don't care about your pet..." and it's been Westside ever since.

Another happy customer here for JC Animal Clinic/Westside. Dr. Gaylord is fantastic - he's been treating my 15 y/o kitty who's illin. He is thorough but very practical about working out a logical sequence of tests and treatments that work for me financially, and for my pet's health. We're doing a sequence of steps/treatments/tests to try to figure out the cause of her problems (so far we've found hyper-thyroid issues).
Helpful hint about medicine for pets in general: Turns out I will have to medicate my kitty for the thyroid problem for the rest of her life. The 3 month pill supply was around $82 at this vet which I bought as I needed it right away . I've since found it online at sites like 1-800-PetMeds for about half that. In the future, I'll be ordering them from the online site.
