Jersey City man sentenced to more than 12 years for robbing federal credit union

September 05, 2012, 1:20 PM
By Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal

NEWARK ? A Jersey City man was sentenced today to 12 and a half years in prison for robbing the Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union in Jersey City in November 2010, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Stanley P. Powell, 42, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge William J.
Martini in federal court in April to an indictment charging him with one count of bank robbery. The maximum sentence was 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Authorities said that on Nov. 23, 2010, Powell entered the Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union on Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City and began yelling and cursing at the teller as he demanded money.

Two bank tellers put money on the counter and Powell stuffed the money into a bag and fled on foot until he reached the home of a relative in Jersey City, authorities said. Initial reports said that Powell had $20,000 in bank funds on him when he was caught.

Not realizing that police were close behind, Powell stood on the front porch and began putting the money into his pants pockets when he was approached by Jersey City police. Powell attempted to flee, but was apprehended, authorities said.

In addition to the prison term, Powell was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Jersey City police nab two suspects they say robbed Chase bank and credit union

Wednesday, November 24, 2010
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City police have arrested two suspects they say separately robbed a Chase Bank located Downtown and the Liberty Federal Credit Union in Greenville.

Two bank robberies, two suspects in cuffs.

Jersey City police quickly responded to two bank robberies in the city today -- one at a credit union in Greenville, the other at a bank Downtown.

And instead of counting the more than $23,000 in cash they made away with, a Virginia Avenue man and a homeless man will be counting the years they face on robbery charges, police officials said tonight.

"It was a great job by the officers who responded and were able to get information on the direction of flight," said Police Chief Tom Comey who responded to the robbery at the JP Morgan Chase bank in Downtown. "They were able to apprehend both individuals, one of whom fought the police."

Police stopped a Hudson Bergen Light-Rail train at Morris and Hudson streets and arrested Patrick J. O'Boyle, 53, of Virginia Avenue, charging him with the 3:10 p.m. robbery of the Chase bank at 575 Washington Blvd., reports said.

When Boyle was arrested at gunpoint, O'Boyle was carrying a plastic bag containing $5,630 in various denominations, reports said.

Stanley Powell, 41, who is homeless, was arrested while sitting on a porch on Pearsall Avenue and counting nearly $18,000, reports said, adding that he was charged with the 10:19 a.m. robbery of Liberty Federal Credit Union at 1590 Kennedy Blvd., reports said.

After the Washington Street bank robbery, police saturated the area, including the Newport Centre Mall, and got a good description of the robber from a bank employee, reports said. They also found a witness who said the man may have boarded a light rail train near the bank, reports said.

Police chased the train and had the conductor stop it while leaving the doors closed, reports said, adding that the officers walked along the car until they spotted a man fitting the description.

With guns drawn, the officers entered the car, ordered the man to put his hands up and escorted him from the train, reports said, adding that he had no weapon but he did have a bag full of cash.

Officers responding to the credit union robbery caught up to a bank employee who had tried to follow the robber as he fled eastbound on Neptune Avenue, reports said.
Cops received a description of the robber from the bank employee, reports said.

When police spotted Powell on Pearsall, Powell yelled "Oh, (expletive)" and took off running with wads of money in his hands, reports said.

Police officers tackled him quickly and cuffed him after a struggle, reports said, adding that Powell was additionally charged with resisting arrest and aggravated assault on police officers.

Several officers suffered bumps and bruises during the scuffle and Powell needed stitches to close a cut on his lip, reports said.

The credit union was also robbed Monday and police are investigating if Powell was connected to that robbery, Lt. Edgar Martinez said.

I was at Target when I saw the whole NJ Transit Police Brigade from their Hoboken base rush down Washington Blvd towards exchange place.. Was wondering what was up, since it was numerous marked and unmarked cars rushing along with a Port PD cruiser and I even saw a Hoboken PD that way.. Don?t know who called them in..

Weird, saw at least 11 police cars rushing there on Grand Street. Some undercover, some regular, many of them transit police. A lot of commotion for sure, maybe a bit of an overkill?
