I've also had great luck using the online system to report uncollected trash (or recycling). (We live on a corner and put our trash near the stop sign but sometimes someone comes along later in the evening and illegally parks there, which I suspect makes it hard for the trash collectors to see our stuff.) http://mycusthelp.com/jerseycitynj/_c ... t.aspx?cat=0&sSessionID=& Note: twice when my husband reported it online without logging in, we got no response. Every time we've reported it with logging in (probably 5 or 6 times) I received an almost immediate email and the truck was back within an hour. So an anonymous report might not work as well as one attached to a name.

I have to say, my block is well maintained in the garbage collection area. The persons working for the city are very polite and tend to go out of their way if they see cars waiting behind them.

Call the J.C.I.A. at once (201) 432-4645 speak to whoever handles collections, leave the garbage out there so they can come back and pick it up. This is happening all over J.C. Plus it's Friday even though the private contractor works tomorrow thw J.C.I.A. does not so you will end up waiting till Monday morning at 9am to report this on going issue. Who wants to look at this all weekend long.

More garbage left behind on my block this a.m.
Looks like it's properly prepared. Are we just gonna have to get used to this? Today they took all mine and left behind someone else's. Is there like only room for so much on the truck?

I looked it up on the JCIA website and sure enough found that it hinders the process for them. They should stop taking people's recycling bins then. They took 3 of mine, so I finally switched to those blue plastic bags.

They missed the single black trash bag I put out last night. I notice this tends to happen when I put out small amounts of trash.

On my block, the garbage bags and recycle stuff are
presented properly. I watch folks putting their stuff out for collection, and by and large, there should be no argument about taking it away. Once again, on this website, we play "blame the victim." It is so tiresome to read these posts from people who daydream they are living in Mayberry. The notion of having to tip to get service is nonsense. Your taxes pay for services from the city. Hold the city accountable when the services are not provided; do not succumb to the lowered expectations that jersey city has always encouraged her people to be satisfied with. If you are getting good services, then we are happy for you; but if you are not, you must get your complaint out there and heard. Complacency is what the entrenched politicians count on.

A couple of times, when we've put out more than usual or some bulky items, we've given them $10 each. Once we gave the driver a $20 and told him to distribute it. That probably wasn't a good idea. I know I pay a lot in taxes, but that sure is a thankless job with crappy hours. Paper should be separate from other recyclables, except for the exception of cartons. Milk cartons, juice boxes should mix in with the cans, bottles, plastic. I don't know why! ... Currently the Authority requires residents to recycle all mixed newspaper in addition to magazines, junk mail, office paper, telephone books, cardboard boxes, corrugated boxes and laundry detergent boxes. Such materials must be tied or placed in recycling containers and placed curbside no earlier than 7:00 PM the night before your scheduled collection day. Co-mingled materials which include glass bottles, aluminum cans, metal cans, milk cartons, drink boxes, water containers, food containers, household cleaner containers, laundry detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, and other related plastic containers can all be placed curbside in a recycling container no earlier than 7:00 PM the night before your scheduled collection day. Recyclables must not be placed out for collection in plastic bags. Placing such in plastic bags seriously hinders our recycling process. Recyclables shall be placed in large plastic containers.

They usually miss my recycling I just leave out the barrel and call the J.C.I.A (201) 432-4645 ask for the missed collection department I get connected tell them and it is picked up either the same day of the next day. As for tipping I'm not sure if the same guys on the 3 trucks caome everyday and with the high taxes we pay compared to the minimal services we get I doubt tipping is nessessary.

Are you certain that there are three separate collections? I put all recyclables - paper, cans, bottles, etc. - in a sturdy clear plastic bag and they take it - no problem. Regular garbage goes in dark green plastic bags - again no problem. Most likely your 'recycling' is simply getting picked up by the trash collector. The previous poster is 100% correct that it is three separate trucks. It's not realistic to think that either one (paper vs cans/bottles) is going to take the time to open up your bag and drop off the other recycling at the other facility. Also, the recycling folks are quite clear that they do NOT want things in plastic bags. I used to do that and thought I was being helpful and then overheard them complaining about it. I looked it up on the JCIA website and sure enough found that it hinders the process for them.

How much do you tip? What's a good going rate? And is that per trashman or just everybody?

In my area, the post-pick-up messes are always in front of the same properties. It mostly seems to happen on the recycle days and people put out trash that is not separated properly. First comes the trash guys. If it looks like it might be recycling, they leave it. Then comes the cans/glass/plastic, last is the paper guys. If the trash is mixed, they leave it.
We try to tip the trash men when we see them, too, but it's not easy. Once I chased them down the street in the early morning.

Do you and your neighbors leave the cans etc. in a visible place? You should always place it on the sidewalk curbside and in a gap between parked cars so that it is visible to the collectors. I often see my neighbors leave the cans and recycling bins in a spot where they are not easily visible like next to a parked car. Leaving the garbage near a gap also prevents them from dragging it over the hood of a car.

how do you do this? I'm serious. our trashmen are awesome. they're so quiet, they take everything, and leave the block super-clean. from the sounds of it, our guys are the only ones in the city who take their job seriously. short of waiting up until 2am with envelopes, how could I give them a little something at the holidays?

Has anyone notice a decline in garbage pickups?
On Third Street in Harsimus Cove, there has been a marked problem with trash left behind and recycling ignored and the street littered with spillover from the truck and huge plastic trash bins rolling down the sidewalk and gutters. I have called JCIA time after time, but you might just as well speak to cinderblock. I let Councilman Fulop know what is going on, but I don't expect he's got the answer to the problem. I would ask that if you are having trouble with trash service that you let JCIA know about it, as well as anyone at city hall who you think might be able to help. I hate to think of all these even higher taxes we're gonna be paying after the reval resulting in the same tired, inefficient, substandard set of services that Jersey City has traditionally provided her people.
