Responsible bike riders? I wished there was a video camera several years ago, near city hall when a bike rider nearly ran over a pedestrian and hit a car. I am hoping more cameras are installed around JC so we can watch these responsible riders! They need insurance.

I totally believe more bike lanes will lead to accidents for bikers as well as pedestrians. There is an elections next year, so this bike lane really is a political subject. It is not done on the safety of bikers, pedestrians, or drivers in mind. JC is not NYC with mass transit and I see more accidents. Those painted lines down Grove Street give a false sense of security for bikers. I really hope the police department save the stats on these future bike/car accidents and not have them listed as motor vehicles accidents. More accidents in JC means higher car insurance. Maybe it is about time, bikers who are involved in accidents start paying insurance.

And walkers alike Yvonne. We have to learn share as we did when we were children. With the Complete Streets program in J.C., all new and revamped streets in Jersey City are to have a multi use system in place. Perhaps restaurant delivery people on bikes should have insurance as well. Sure lets have bicycle insurance, bike lanes, registrations it will give the bike riding community a leg to stand on in case of litigious situations that may arise so let?s see who ends up being at fault perhaps that is what the non-biking public is afraid of. As far as accidents are, concerned bike lanes create a responsible riding environment for all that share the road, without it, cyclists may run amuck. The country is becoming more bicycle friendly should Jersey City continue to live in the Stone Age or finally get on the map of progress ?

oh sweet I just realized that since I won't be getting exercise on a daily basis, my health can suffer and my health insurance rates will go up as well! AND I can drive up gas prices by putting a bit more demand out there. This is the best you guys.

So bikes are not a viable option for transportation? Well shit I wish you'd told me sooner. I better stop riding my bike to work and to stores and bars and friends' houses every day.

Better to just drive my car so I can pay for gas and cause traffic and struggle to find parking. Nothing I love more than that. Ooh I bet my insurance company would raise my premiums too!

Oh, stop. Nowhere did anyone say "ban cars" or "force arthritic 80 year olds to ride bikes." I don't know where you're getting that from. Having bike lanes so people can safely ride their bikes isn't preventing anyone from driving. I realize cars are a useful invention.

If you don't like bike lanes just don't use them. I really don't see the problem here.

A bike lane network would just be another viable transit option in addition to other transit options.

If you are arguing we should eliminate old people and people with children, you might get more support than you expect.

I don't know what makes me angrier... cars not realizing they can KILL me while I am on my bike, or other people on bikes not realizing cars can KILL them.

I think the discussion about bike lanes is about changing the infrastructure and creating livable streets. Yes, as it is now, much of jc is lacking in public transportation and it's not safe to bike because there are no bike lanes. It would be safe to do all the things you say by bike if, over time, that changes. The only reason you need a car is because there is only infrastructure for cars. The first step to changing this is by putting in some bike lanes. If everyone just says "it's not going to work so let's not try it" then nothing changes.

Using a bike in the rain or snow or biking over a pot hole has to be dangerous. The city adopted the bike lanes so it could claim it is a green city. Only time will tell how many accidents will happen between bikes, cars, and the walking public.

Nobody said "everyone should stop driving forever."

Also, this is a city. Look across the river. Only 46 percent of people living in NYC own cars. The beauty of living in a city is that things are close by and accessible so you don't need to be doing Costco-style shopping.

Bike lanes encourage more people to bike. There is a safety in numbers effect.

Bike friendly cities are the future, just look over at what NYC is doing. JC will be very slow to adopt this mentality if they do at all. Ending the right on red is just one of many things that need to happen to make this area safe for bikes/pedestrians. Not holding my breath...

"I know how to solve this congestion problem, more auto-centric infrastructure!"

NYC is getting a huge bike share this summer. If jersey city is to have a successful future it needs to get with the program. Future generations are driving less and opting for urban environments when looking for places to live.

Give me a break, please. I'm tired of all this Obama socialistic green energy regulation stuff. Why impose more regulations on businesses. more rules is the wrong way to go, especially when the economy is so weak

I have to agree that in a city where horrible driving habits rule, the bike lanes will give a false sense of security to cyclists. In my area of town, people are always double parked, even on streets like Garfield and Danforth that are extremely busy. And i dont even recall how many times i have been passed on Garfied by the Bayview Cemetary, sometimes on the left and sometimes on the right.

until these drivers get the word that violations are serious and expensive I think bike lanes would just be seen as another passing lane.

Hopefully the bike lanes stay and get expanded to the other main thoroughfares in town...Newark ave, Jersey Ave, Columbus ave, Montgomery, Grand, Marin and Washington.
Yeah, prob asking a lot but it would be nice.

As far as weaving in and out of double parked cars there is a risk of the bike side swiping the doors or mirrors of these illegal double parked cars which could result in dents, dings, and scrapes of the pretty painted surfaces of these horseless carriages. Not to mention the bikes themselves.

The police cruiser was just sitting there and not on any obvious business. Worse, there was plenty of room for the car to be parked closer to the curb and out of the bike lane--but the cop didn't seem to care.

Nor did the two other drivers who had their cars double-parked blocking the bike lane between Columbus and Montgomery, making a total of 3 cars in the bike lane on that short stretch of road. And that was for the north side of the street only!

Every time I ride down Grove I encounter 3 to 5 cars parked in the bike lane for that short stretch. I decided to just take the center of the lane because it's safer than merging in and out of the bike lane constantly to avoid double parked cars. I don't understand it--can't people just find a parking space and then walk to their desired location? You don't have to park right in front of the door everywhere you go.

Mainly just for the month of May during Green month the city decided to put the bike lane in front of city hall so they can monitor the lane. Who is taking tabs on this bike lane's usage ? The mayor states the bicycle lanes are temporary but will gage how well the lanes work out and if successful may stay. Maybe at that point the city can go from parade paint to a more permanent stripping. Many cyclists? ears have heard that the Mayor thinks bike lanes are dangerous. I wish someone could debate him on that. Why is he so against them but in favor of automobiles and the traffic that goes with them?

Fast or slow, sidewalks are not for cycling. Period. (They might be called "sidecycles" if they were.... ) http://www.state.nj.us/transportation ... e/pdf/bicyclingmanual.pdf

If you feel unsafe in the road and need to get onto the sidewalk, get off your bike and walk it. Granted, there aren't many places worse to ride than Hudson County (Hoboken excepted) but pedestrians shouldn't have the risk shifted onto them because you don't feel safe in the road.

I'm on board with everything you've said but this.

Granted, I wasn't with the ride so I don't know the full extent, but taking a lane on a bicycle is more for the cyclist's safety than anything. I frequently ride in the lane to prevent doors from flying open on the right, to prevent cars from sandwiching me on the left and for options if anything else pops up.

If we are riding in traffic and not in a bicycle lane, than we have to be apart of traffic and not some sort of side show. When turning, I use lanes marked for cars. When riding, I use lanes marked for cars. It's unfortunate that it blocks other cars, but it's a shared road.

Maybe your riders over-did it, but there's some truth to their theory.

As a cyclist, it feels safest to mix and match. Sometimes sidewalk is safer, sometimes the road, and yes sometimes the wrong way "feels" better. This isn't the law, but sadly, with our sad state of transportation culture, it is the reality.

Obviously there are many yahoo/low-skill/entitled cyclists among us, there is no doubt. I did a group ride with some "serious" cyclists (messenger types), and I cannot believe how center of street they stayed and how pissed off drivers were. I told them that was not cool at all, how would they like it if pedestrians blocked them?

I stay as right as possible, but then I've had doors opened on me. How many drivers check their mirror for cyclists? In Holland, they teach you to open the driver's door with your RIGHT hand so you turn your head automatically.

I am a pedestrian, a driver and a motorcyclist. Can I cycle the way I motorcycle through town, obeying the letter of the law? No, I would be killed. I have to duck and weave to "make space", because cars don't give me any (and some peds don't either).

If you want to see transportation done right, go to Germany. I've spent some time in Cologne, and it was many kinds of awesome. Cars drive slow in town and fast on the highway. Public transport works. Bike lanes are not beside the road, they were between parked cars and the sidewalk. Pedestrians stay off the bike sidewalks. People who cycle know how to ride a bike (sort of like they knew how to drive). There is a whole culture around transportation safety, efficiency and fun.

Some people are bothered by cyclists on streets and try to run us down, some of those are the same people who are bothered by the occasional cyclist on the sidewalk. Even the recently started bike lane on Grove (that really needs to be extended to a whole lot of other streets) has double-parked cars on it. Where do you want us to go???

/END RANT

In summary, bike lanes are a GOOD thing. The more the better. City streets need to be narrowed in any case to slow traffic down (also a GOOD thing and I personally like fast cars in safe circumstances). I just hope we make the transition with the most respect for each other, whichever role we are in, and with the least amount of accidents.
