A good tapas place. I mean authentic, with a list of good Spanish wines, plenty of chorizo, pulpo a la Gallego and gambas on the menu and Spanish hams hanging over the bar. Seems like a no-brainer, but it is probably easier said than done. I ate at Amada in Philly last weekend, and thought that a place like that would do well in JC.

Would love to see a gourmet burger shop open in JC. We have no truly great burger places. There's definitely a market, and seems like the type of place that would thrive after hours for the bar crowd as well.

Dockside seafood like crabs, clams, lobster, peel and eat shrimp, and oysters. Tables outside with a band would be nice. Remind me we live by the water!

No more "comfort food," please. American with french influence would work...something elegant, preferably. We could use a few more high end places...the special occasion / impress your date / foodie-centric type. Live piano or jazz is always a seller, and too rare. A dress code. The money is here, but the options are too few.
And we in jersey city love to eat outdoors, so a patio or sidewalk space is a nice touch, but don't sacrifice other aspects for it.

Of course, I'd always support somewhere else with good seafood...but I'm very biased there due to personal taste.

I'm in agreement re: delicious healthy (maybe vegan?) restaurant. There is an amazing restaurant chain in California called Cafe Gratitude that specialises in delicious raw food. The places are always packed, and veg/vegans/omnivores alike all enjoy the food there. Considering the traffic that our farmers markets see, I'd like to think that JC folks are interested in eating healthfully and deliciously.

And if this doesn't work, may I humbly request that you have a delicious vegan meal that has nothing to do with hummus. Please.

We need a place that offers simple daily specials at a reasonable price like Wednesday Night Prime Rib for $20 and Friday Night Lobster for $20. Consistent, good food at a price that brings me back again and again.

All You Can Eat Crabs would be fun too.

A professional waitstaff would be appreciated. For some reason that's the hardest thing to find in downtown.

At lunch time they are definitely delivering to offices in the downtown because I've overheard them talking about delivery addresses.

in the past every time I have called they have had some excuse why they couldn't today but call tomorrow.... after 5 calls and 5 excuses I gave up (but maybe its different now bc that was right when they started offering delivery)

(I have a vegetarian friend who is allergic to ginger our only take out options are italian/pizza, falafel and mexican so it can get old fast)

oh and a good delivery mexican place.... the current delivery options for mexican downtown are gross (bubby's, boca grande, etc..... non-orange cheese- like product and fresh made salsa/guac would be awesome)

The Cape May Lobster House here in Jersey City! Now ain't that a wonderful thought!! It would be fantastic. I would agree with the many here that have suggested a 24 hour quality well priced diner near Grove St. The small plates and good drink restaurants here are just fine ( I love Park & Sixth - such quality ingredients and great tasting things there!) but some nights you just don't wish to spend too much for a quick dinner.

A seafood Mecca like the Lobster House in Cape May. Ideally along the canal by Liberty Harbor. The city should take advantage of the waterfront. Using the water to its potential. + for a 24 hour diner on Newark Ave.

I agree with the previous posts. A 24 diner would do really well here along with a korean bbq restaurant.

However, the places that seem to be the most successful in similar areas are the places with good drinks and food at a reasonable price. A spitzer's from the LES or a five leaves in Greenpoint are two examples that would thrive in a place like JC. no frills type of place with good beers on tap, quality food at a decent price.

Seriously, what we need is a good all-around general purpose diner. The kind of place you would visit weekly if not more for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It doesn't have to have a 1000 page menu or even be open 24h (6am to 11pm would be more than enough).

They key is to use good ingredients and prepare straight-forward food really well and dependably with a capital D so that people know what they are going to get. If you order eggs they should be well cooked, not runny or greasy. If you order a BLT, crispy bacon and fresh lettuce.

Aside from having well-made, dependable diner fare, a good brunch on Sat/Sun would be a huge hit - especially if the place is lucky enough to score sidewalk space.

Speaking for Downtown as best I can tell the only thing we have in this category right now is the Brownstone, which IMO does not cut the mustard - makes up for lack of quality with excess quantity, and it's really a pancake house that also makes other stuff.

While I like all of the haut-cuisine, ethnic, destination dining suggestions from others in this thread, I'm not going to visit any one place like that more than once every 6 months. In JC that's not enough to keep a place open. Our market is also not really ready for any more niche places, even if they have good food. Sandwich at Rue Viet anyone?

My secret, totally impractical dream is for a true British jacket potato shop. They just serve baked potatoes with a variety of toppings. If we had one I'd eat lunch there every day. (Seriously why is this not at least a food truck yet?)
