Bright Street tavern would only make sense if they extend the area along most of Grand St.

How is it that so many places outside of newark avenue get around this. One example that comes to mind is the powerhouse that opend next to 0'Haras

The laws prohibiting any music are apparently still too restrictive.

The restaurant is now popular with the neighborhood, and my guess is that if he sought a variance for an entertainment license, he would have a good chance of getting it now. No need to change the zoning to include one restaurant.

Not only that, but it's WAY away from Newark - it's on the other side of Montgomery! That said, the liquor laws should be changed, but until they are, there's no reason to make one exception, especially in a case like this

It's really a shame about that piano. On the upside, the restaurant seems to be thriving as is. The food is delicious and the food we've had delivered is just as good. Ah, the Moroccan Lamb burger with a Hendrick's martini! Maybe we'll go there tonight!

One, including Brightside Tavern in its own dedicated restaurant row is absurd.

Two, laws restricting the proximity of liquor licenses are ridiculous.

Three, not allowing live music outside of designated zones is no less absurd.

The only problem is that most often the answers provided are not accurate.

Bright Side Tavern is located on the corner of Monmouth and Bright.

Classic crappy JJ reportage, no mention of exactly where the Brightside IS that would get the zoning change! So just about everyone in JC outside VV park are left to scratch their heads or google to find out whether it's a block or a mile from the Row.

Too bad, this is a nice place to chill.

The City Council's chamber makes sense and I know it sucks for Bright Side. Maybe Brightside should move so that it can take advantage of zoning change.

The Jersey City City Council tonight rejected a move to expand the Newark Avenue Restaurant Row, with council members saying they objected to changing a law to satisfy one business owner.
The measure, rejected 6-1, with one member abstaining and two absent, would have permitted The Brightside Tavern to be included in the Downtown area?s Restaurant Row, a city effort to attract new restaurants to Newark Avenue and its environs.
Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop, who voted against the proposed change, said he wants The Brightside Tavern to succeed, but added it would be ?bad practice? to change the Restaurant Row boundaries for one restaurant.
?If the rules aren?t made for everybody, they should be made for nobody,? Fulop said.
Fulop was joined by council members Rolando Lavarro, Nidia Lopez, Michele Massey, Viola Richardson and Michael Sottolano. Council President Peter Brennan abstained.
The city proposed expanding the boundaries of Restaurant Row to include Brightside Tavern, as well as a portion of Newark Avenue between Kennedy Boulevard and the Pulaski Skyway. Fulop said he may have approved of a measure including just the Newark Avenue businesses.
Brightside Tavern owner Tom Parisi left the council chambers in a huff after the vote, and declined to comment, saying ?Everything?s fine ? there?s no story here.?
Restaurants in the Newark Avenue Restaurant Row, which encompasses a triangle-shaped area along Newark Avenue from Grove Street to Jersey Avenue, are exempt from state liquor laws that prohibit one licensed establishment from being within 520 feet of another.
They are also permitted to obtain entertainment licenses, which permit them to host live entertainment, without seeking zoning variances.
Bright Street resident Alex Forrester spoke to the council on the tavern?s behalf. Forrester, 31, said he and his neighbors frequent the tavern and would love for Parisi to be able to utilize the piano that?s now sitting unused.
He added that he understands the council?s concern about spot zoning, but thinks it?s more important to support local businesses.
?It would be nice to have live piano music playing while we?re having dinner,? Forrester said. ?It would be really great to see this (restaurant) succeed.?
