The only thing that could dislodge that fat corrupt slug is a local television station. That's not gonna happen. Quote: I think we do. Given, I'm a Republican and I don't expect any Republicans to win in this county any time soon. But its not about a Republican, its about having a challenger to the current practices of the candidates in office, who just happend to be Democrats. If the tables were turned, I would say JC was in need of a Democrat. Well I started the Obama for President thread on this website and I now think he's a lying corrupt whore for Wall Street tool. (And the Congressional Black Congress agrees with me.) So I guess I've gone from an optimistic liberal to a cynical socialist/capitalist.

JC and all cities need a mayor that is a Risk Management specialist, not some financial screw up or lawyer that knows how to screw the system and us

And I didnt say that Rudy is a good mayor or a bad mayor. All I said was that he was a strong mayor in terms of tacking crime in the city.

Very well said. One party ruling for too long is a recipe for disaster. You can see that with all the political corruption in Hudson county.

Party affiliation doesn't really matter in Jersey City since the elections are held as non-partisan events. A democrat could run against Healy just as well as Republican. What you really need is someone willing to spend between $5 and $10 million on direct mail, network television and radio, professional campaign staff, and election day turkeys.

Ummm.......
Before I answer, I need to know why you phrased the question like this. I can not for the life of me understand why a strong (or good) mayor would need to be a member of the Republican Party. I can say that as a registered Democrat I would happily and publicly vote for most any Republican if they were running against our current mayor or anyone coming out of the HCDO. Anyone got a problem with this?

Was Giuliani responsible for New York City becoming gentrified or are lower crime rates in NYC due to gentrification?

You're kidding, right? You can't have a discussion about police practices in this country without talking about race. That's a lot like trying to talk about the weather without mentioning temperature, cloud cover, and the sun.

Minorities and especially Black folks are the victims in the majority of crimes in this country. Unfortunately they also represent the majority of victims in police brutality cases. Rudy and his Police Dept were smart on crime in that they attacked it where the rubber meets the road. Habitual criminals will do stupid things like jump turnstiles, shoplift, pester commuters for change etc. so they were easy to sweep off the streets. Unfortunately, not much was being done to stop the rampant criminality on Wall St.

I feel color of skin need not be brought into discussion here. There are many innocent people of all colors who die or live in fear because of the high crime rate in certain neighborhoods.

Yes, we need a strong Republican Mayor who can implement stop and frisk laws that target people of color and then have a police force that shoots first and asks questions later (Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo)

Umm, no. Crime isn't our biggest problem, financial accountability is. Solve the latter and we'll have plenty of money to throw at the former.
What made Giuliani and Bloomberg successful wasn't being Republican, because neither are particularly. It was not being part of the entrenched and beholden Dem Machine. We need independent thinking, not tired and offensive GOP dogma. Republican Mayor Schundler used a lot of "Wall Street" smarts and smoke & mirrors to make us think he was different, but even while he was controversial in office, history has judged him just another player who dug us a deeper hole rather than pointing the way out.

Rudy Guiliani didn't do anything special. He simply happened to be lucky enough to be in office at the right time.
1. Nationwide crime began declining during the same period, and while New York garnered the most attention, declines in other cities were no less significant 2. Legalized abortions twenty years before Guiliani took office reduced the surplus population. 3. National trends of longer prison sentences and an overall increase in the percentage of people in jail at any given time. Guiliani was a corrupt cop before running for mayor. Even if you like cops, you should admit that corrupt cops belong in jail not running cities.

Do we need a strong republican mayor to tackle crime in jersey city? Just like NYC had Rudy Guiliani. What are your thoughts on this?
