I suspect many on JC list are blue baggers, but for those who are not.....

The neighborhood near Casa Vasca is pretty safe. I have spent lots of time in the area because my friend lived right across from Casa Vasca. There are two sketchy bars within a block of the restaurant where stupid people will act up now and then. If it makes you feel safer the sketchier bar closest to Casa Vasca is frequented by members of the NPD. :)

I lived in Newark for a long while, and your recommendations are very good. The Marisqueira and Casa Vasca are the best. I only differ on Rodizio. Bio na Brasa is my #1, Brasilia a close second. I would say however, that if you are walking over to Casa Vasca to keep an extra eye out.

My favorite is Iberia, about a 2 minute walk from the Newark PATH. Great rodizio and the mariscada is really good too. There are two locations; I slightly prefer the Iberia Peninsula over the Iberia Tavern, but they are supposedly identical in terms of food. The inside decor in the Peninsula is nicer than the Tavern though.

My favorite place for Rodisio in the ironbound is Brasilia.

Yes, a half block from the Pathmark. They expanded a bit, but it's still crowded. Used to be like eating in someone's kitchen at one time.

Good place, always seems to be packed too. It's by the Pathmark right?

Estrela Da ponderosa 85 Niagara St Newark, NJ 07105 (973) 344-4484 Off the beaten path in the Ironbound area. Authentic food. Not the greatest looking place, but excellent prices, great paella, and the waiter, Nelson, is amazing. He memorizes everyone's order and has never faltered in the dozen or so times that I've been there. A short taxi ride from the PATH.

It gets over looked too often but Casa Vasca is amazing. About 3 blocks from pen station, two blocks off Ferry Street. Run by a little old lady from the Basque Country and Family. I have eaten several times there. My friend who came from Spain was the one who introduced me to the place. She was good friends with the family. I personally loved the Monk Fish that comes with rice and an amazing green sauce.

What is wrong with the decor at Fernandes? I always found it warm and cozy. Lots of brick and wood. Quite typical of all of the Portugese/Spanish restaurants I've been to...

I also recommend Seabra Marisqueria on Madison, it's our favorite seafood place in the IronBound. Portions are large, we always end up sharing a main course after getting some appetizers. Family atmosphere, very reasonable prices, consistent quality food.

The Ironbound is walkable and safe, don't think you need to worry much at night.
My favorite spot for Rodizio is Iberia Peninsula (very close to Penn) Favorite spot for seafood is Seabra Marisqueria on Madison (NOT Seabra Rodizio. different places) Favorite spot for general stuff is Casa Vasca at Elm & Prospect, though it's a few blocks off Ferry.

Fornos is consistently the best in my opinion and walkable from the PATH.

I always enjoy Fernandes Steakhouse - they had a fire a while back and haven't been there since (not sure if they're open again - might want to call). Good dishes, great rodizio, terrible decor. I've never taken the PATH there, but I don't think it's terribly close.

I'm thinking of taking the path out to Newark on a weekend night for some Portuguese food. Any recommendations?
Is the Ironbound area walkable from the path station or should I expect to take a cab for distance/safety reasons?
