Rolling blackouts in Jersey City, PSE&G announces; Hamilton Park facility on backup power

At the five-story, 260 bed Hamilton Park Health Care Facility on Monmouth Street staff members having activated procedures for blackouts, said Executive Director George Arezzo after the building lost power today at roughly 4 p.m.

PSE&G is conducting rolling blackouts, spokeswoman Karen Johnson said in an email.

She said the utility interrupted electric service to about 4,000 customers served by a substation in Jersey City because one of the power lines serving the station was approaching its emergency rating.

PSE&G has instituted the rolling blackouts "to preserve the integrity of the grid," Johnson said, adding that customers interrupted would have their power restored in about an hour.

She added that the rotating outages would last until about 7 p.m.

Its gotta a substation in the area that went out as the PD and FD are not on the block. If the substation went out, then Residents would be without power as well would be out of power..

I wonder if newport lost power, or is it on a different feeder?

I checked the PJM grid's emergency message boards. Lots and lots of warning of potential rolling blackouts (manual load dumps).

With all those new towers housing thousands of residents it's a wonder it (power) held up this long. Welcome to the Crowdtown section of J.C.

Power outage in downtown Jersey City affects fire, police headquarters
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal

A blackout in downtown Jersey City has knocked out power to the Jersey City Fire Department headquarters as well as the phone system at Police Headquarters on Erie Street, officials said.

The fire headquarters is now operating on back-up generators, Jersey City Fire Department Director Armando Roman said. Police Chief Tom Comey said that anyone trying to reach headquarters should call their local precinct. He added that the no other police operations have been affected.

Power to the Fire headquarters on Marin Boulevard near Sixth Street went out minutes ago, Roman said.

Public Service Electric & Gas is looking into the matter to determine what areas have been affected.

Jersey City OEM Directer Greg Kierce said that a manhole cover at Grove and Bay streets has smoke coming from it. Authorities are investigating, he said, adding that it may be related to the power outage.

May not be that bad. Definitely worth using a surge protector though.

Please don't run any electrical devices if you don't need them. A power outage would really suck! AC's on 75f and lights off etc if you don't need them.
