Mother of ninth suspect in Bayonne coma case beating arrested Monday, July 18, 2011, 6:27 AM By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal The mother of the 15-year-old Bayonne boy arrested early Friday in connection with the savage beating that put 22-year-old Bayonne resident Dawid Strucinski in a coma was arrested later Friday and has been charged with hindering the apprehension of her son, Bayonne police said yesterday. The 32-year-old woman was arrested Friday at 9:25 p.m. and charged with the fourth-degree crime of hindering the apprehension of her son by knowing his whereabouts, lying about his whereabouts, and failing to turn him over to authorities, Deputy Police Chief Ralph Scianni said. The boy the ninth suspect arrested in connection with the July 3 attack on Strucinski near the Quick Chek at 12th Street and Broadway in Bayonne was arrested at 5:49 a.m. Friday after he was found hiding in his grandmother?s house in Newark, officials said. He was charged with aggravated assault, rioting and endangering an injured victim, police said. The grandmother was not home when he was arrested, police said. The boy?s mother is being held at the Hudson County jail in Kearny on a $20,000 cash bond and is expected to appear at Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City today, police said. So far, two girls, ages 14 and 17, three 16-year-old boys, three 15-year-old boys, and 18-year-old Derrick Hilton have been arrested in connection to the incident. Strucinski briefly opened his eyes on Monday and was conscious but unable to speak on Thursday, according to friends and family. His close friends, Steve Grau and Dan Sautkin, visited him Friday and said that he seemed to recognize them. ?We spent some time talking to him and at times he seemed happy to see us. At one point, he grabbed Dan?s hand and not only pulled it up to his mouth, but very clearly kissed it as well,? Steve Grau wrote in an email yesterday. ?It was truly an unreal experience and much more than we expected to see. ?Upon our departure from the visit, we said good-bye to Dave and he appeared to give us a thumbs up,? Grau said. Initial police reports stated Strucinski, a recent Rutgers graduate, was attacked by nine boys and four girls, but police are no longer certain about that number, Scianni said. Describing the incident as ?a crime of opportunity? Scianni said Strucinski was beaten during a riot fueled by alcohol after a chance encounter between two groups. ?There was drinking on both sides,? he said. ?The investigation is still ongoing and we have worked closely with the Prosecutor?s Office on this case,? Scianni said. Anyone with information about this crime should contact Bayonne police detectives at (201) 858-6925 or call the confidential tip line at (877) 900-8477.

15-year-old boy arrested in Newark, is charged in Bayonne man's beating
Published: Saturday, July 16, 2011, 3:00 AM By Toni-Ann Cerbo/The Jersey Journal A 15-year-old Bayonne boy who had been hiding out at his grandmother?s house in Newark was arrested yesterday morning on charges of being part of the teen mob that inflicted a savage beating that left Dawid Strucinski of Bayonne in a coma, Bayonne police said. He is the ninth teen arrested in the attack on Strucinski, 22, who was attacked at around 3 a.m. July 3 by nine males and four girls at 14th Street and Broadway after he tried to help a friend who was being harassed by the mob, police and family members have said. Police arrested the latest suspect at 5:49 a.m. and charged him with aggravated assault, rioting and endangering an injured victim after police found him hiding at his grandmother?s house in Newark, Police Capt. Walter Rogers said. Police said the boy?s grandmother was not at the residence when the boy was apprehended. So far, two girls, ages 14 and 17, three 16-year-old boys, three 15-year-old boys, and 18-year-old Derrick Hilton have been arrested in connection with the incident. On Monday, Strucinski opened his eyes, but doctors have still not determined how much of a recovery he may make, his father, Peter Strucinski, said Tuesday. But friends and family are staying optimistic. Strucinski briefly opened his eyes again yesterday. Dan Sautkin, 22, who was with Strucinski the night he was attacked, said he has been visiting his friend daily at the hospital. ?He was looking around when we walked in the room,? Sautkin said. ?And when we left, he gave us a thumbs-up. For us, that is a key sign of progress ... it was awesome.? Anyone with information about the crime should contact Bayonne police detectives at (201) 858-6925 or call the confidential tip line at (877) 900-8477.

22-year-old Bayonne assault victim was robbed of wallet, police said Published: Monday, July 11, 2011, 3:00 AM By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal The 22-year old Bayonne man who was savagely beaten by a teen mob over a week ago was robbed of his wallet, police said yesterday. Dawid Strucinski, a recent Rutgers University graduate, has been in a coma at the Jersey City Medical Center ever since the attack that occurred at about 3 a.m. July 3 near the Quick Chek at 12th Street and Broadway. He was beaten after he rushed to help a friend who was being harassed by a group of nine boys and four girls, police said. Meanwhile, a fundraiser held Friday to help Strucinski?s family defray medical costs raised about $19,000, Steve Grau, a friend of the victim, said yesterday. So far five teens two girls, ages 14 and 17, and three 16-year-old boys have been arrested in connection with the incident. Bayonne Deputy Police Chief Ralph Scianni said yesterday that after one of the 16-year-old boys knocked Strucinski to the ground, another 16-year-old boy riffled through his pockets and grabbed his wallet. The wallet has not been recovered and it is not clear what it contained, Scianni said. The three 16-year-old Bayonne boys are all charged with aggravated assault, endangering a victim, and rioting, and one of them is additionally charged with second-degree theft, Scianni said. The teen girls are both charged with endangering an injured victim and with rioting, he said. A complaint has been issued against a 15-year-old boy in connection to the attack and police are still searching for him, Scianni said. Anyone with information about this crime should contact Bayonne police detectives at (201) 858-6925 or call the confidential tip line at (877) 900-8477.

It is an odd story of an underage drunken house party of crazy violent teens (Boys and Girls), but it is Bayonne and not the Heights -- however feel free to start a "Not Jersey City" Thread for it -- there is more new news: (click links below) http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index ... be_charged_for_under.html http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index ... e_teenagers_arrested.html

I'm curious if any of the people involved are associated with the house that has been causing problems at that location.

They were both in there 40's not 16. What would a curfew have done in this case?

How did this become a referendum on law enforcement? You have an animal - probably drunk - who has anger/rage issues to the point where an argument led him to take a bat to the skull of another person. Curfews, better police response times, bat bans - none of them would prevent this. This sounds like the sort of person who would have grabbed a toaster, a tire iron, a bottle, a chair - whatever - to use in his attack. I hope this guy is locked up for a very, very long time.

It's all a bit unfortunate I guess, I moved to the Heights because of it's family appeal. And I find it's also a little ironic, normally it's the inhabitants of an area that keep it down, here it seems like it's the local government/ local law enforcement... I think the Heights is in general a better place then downtown but they seem to get all the attention. I wasn't aware of the curfew, thanks for that bit of info...

Police care very little about quality of life issues and do often practice selective enforcement. Call them the next time you hear kids screaming up and down your block at 1am and see if they show up.

Jersey City already has a curfew in effect for children under the age of 18. It is rarely, if ever, enforced.

I do realize that this would be difficult to enforce, but as I said, it wouldn't solve all problems might not even have any effect on the posted issue and there would have to be stipulations put on it, i.e. an age limit. But, I'm also thinking about the children that are going up and down the streets screaming and yelling at 1a.m. The kids that had a gun in Pershing Field a few weeks ago.

Any curfew would be difficult to institute due to Jersey City's overall lack of enforcement.

A police state would be awesome...but what about people leaving places like Beer Garden and Barcade? Their businesses would suffer a ton since they close at ~2ish.
Maybe a baseball bat ban would be more in line with your intended goals. I don't think the kids in the Little League would appreciate that, though.

In reference to this and a few other issues in the Heights, I don't think it wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea to instate a curfew... I'm sure there would be a big uproar, but maybe it would help to impose control and order.
