What chachacha said. If we couldn't bring food on the train, then we couldn't do a spot of grocery shopping in the city. I think riders are just not supposed to chow down on the train.

Pet peeve: People who bring hot coffee on the train. I know, I know, we all need our coffee. But on the rare occasion when I get a seat, if someone is standing above me with scalding coffee, I get nervous, both from a dry-cleaning and a burn standpoint.

The exception is New Year's Eve when they prohibit ALL alcohol - open AND closed containers. I don't agree with this, but that is what has been done for years.

Pretty sure the "law" is to discourage eating and drinking on the train...not to carry food. It doesn't make sense that I can't go grocery shopping at Whole Foods/Trader Joes and also buy a few beers and not be able to bring them back via PATH train.

Like most laws, this is enforced arbitrarily at the whim of steroid fueled meatheads.

Like many of these type of laws, the subtext is "don't be an asshole and you won't be bothered". I suspect the real reason for the law is the same as the elimination of the trashcans: save the PA money on cleanup.

Okay this is from PATH Rules & Regulations

V. Personal Conduct

C. No person shall eat any food or drink any beverage on the station platforms of PATH or while aboard any rail car operated by PATH.

L. No person shall drink, or carry an open container of, any alcoholic beverage.

M. No person shall smoke or carry a lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe containing tobacco or any other substance anywhere else within the PATH system.

That being said, a few years ago there was a person smoking and drinking a 40 on the Grove Street Platform. I went upstairs, told the five Port Authority officers about this, and they shrugged it off. Granted if I recall, the officers were there when the Metrocard machines were being emptied of cash. This person carried on yelling, ranting, raving, cursing, drinking, and smoking and the PA officers did nothing. Then the train pulled in, I got on, and the guy got on my car doing the same.

You should be fine. I have come home late from work with two slices of pizza in a box or a sub in a bag. I think if you were to start eating on the PATH, you could have a potential problem if someone saw you.

I've seen a whole family eating McDonald's on the PATH between Newark and JSQ. There was a Port Authority cop in the car and he did absolutely nothing.

I've seen a similar sign but you can bring cigarettes on but you obviously cant smoke them on the train

Yes. I have brought food home from Chinatown such as roast duck and roast pork. Just tie up the bag nicely. If it smells too much, double bag it. It is easier on the WTC train. The station is open air so you won't smell up the station. There are less stops, and it is less crowded if you go to the cars at the end.

I get takeout from Sammy's on 6th ave and carry it home on the PATH often, so yes you can.
