Never understood the Shoprite hate. Been going there since they opened up some 15? years ago. Hardly any problems, easily the cheapest prices in the area for sale items and a wide enough variety that I rarely need to look elsewhere for items.
That said, there are Trader Joes mere blocks from the 14th and 23rd St. Path stops. I try and make it a point to get a few things from them every time I'm in that area during the daytime hours.

From Grove Pointe, the best grocery store is Whole Foods at the WTC. I pretty much only shop there, or Tendershoot Farm for fruits and veggies and La Nueva Isla for meat when I don't feel like going to the city.
Shoprite is the best store around to get everything in one place, but that's not saying much. But Shoprite is torture and suffers from the same up and down quality in Jersey City produce that everywhere else here does, but it is the only place really in walking distance of Grove Pointe that offers a full selection of frozen vegetables, etc as well. Fresh fruit and vegetables are hit or miss everywhere in Jersey City which is odd and sucks. Sometimes you could hit every place in town and not find a good onion, for example. La Conga has Mexican Cokes, but their overall grocery selection is lacking. Butcher shop there is decent and cheap though.

I don't think slow and apathetic are strong enough words to describe what it's like to check out at the Shop Rite. I wouldn't suggest going there.
Ever. For anything. No matter what. Not to mention you might come back and find your car has been towed illegally even though you were shopping at the Shop Rite. And in an effort to be helpful, if you can get over to the A&P by the Holland Tunnel, I've always enjoyed my shopping experiences there.

Coming from Canada, the slow checkout lines and apathetic cashiers as Shop Rite should make you feel right at home!

Kannekt is a good resource for retail and services in JC downtown and the area. I wouldn't put too much trust in the reviews ... as negative ones are typically deleted by the business owners.

there's a small grocery store near the intersection of bay street and newark ave. they sell fresh fruits and veggies, as well as basic stuff like milk, etc.

On the smaller side you have Liberty Towers Gourmet on the corner of Essex and Hudson across from the Essex Street light rail stop and Hudson Greene which is on the street level of 77 Hudson. There are also the grocers such as Tender Shoot on Newark and Lee's on Grove.
For the larger chains you have the aforementioned ShopRite as well as Morton Williams, which is in the Newport section at 20 Newport Parkway. Morton Williams has free indoor parking if you spend more than $10 and is much less crowded than ShopRite. A little further away is the A&P on 18th Street, which is a bit of a hike on foot. There may also be a Trader Joe's and/or Whole Foods coming, but that is a topic for another thread.

Tender Shoot Farm on Newark Ave (2 mins from Grove St PATH) is a nice enough place for a quick grocery trip. There is another fruit/vegetable market down the road as well (on 2nd St).

Grocery stores in downtown JC (close to Grove PATH)?

My husband and I just moved to Grove Pointe (right next to the PATH station), and we're wondering where the nearest grocery stores are. Ideally we'd be able to walk to the suggested stores, but can drive if necessary.
We moved to JC from Canada, so we don't know the names of the US grocery chains, otherwise I would just look up locations on their websites. Please suggest grocery stores in this area, and please let me know if it's a full grocery store, or just a little corner store that has a few groceries. Thanks in advance!
