With the split there is more N-S capacity for a few blocks, yet on either end of the split there is less N-S capacity. Wouldn?t that just cause a bottleneck? The split basically serves a 6 block by 3 block area to the south and east bounded by water on both sides. I dont understand the purpose, but then again i am not a civil engineer.

*Edit - Just read ianmac47's explanation of the long term goal...makes a little more sense

The traffic configuration makes perfect sense if and when Greene Street opens all the way through. Its turning the streets into one way avenues, which is better for cars because it eliminates congestion from cars making left turns. And its better for pedestrians who only need to contend with crossing a street with traffic coming from one direction. However, as long as Greene Street is closed, its just a big mess.

Is Green actually going to connect to 2nd St. now? Because as it is, driving north from Paulus Hook, you have to turn off Green St. and connect back to Washington to get to 2nd St.

Please be advised of the following:

- New Traffic Pattern, Permanent

Beginning Monday, April 12, 2010

1. Greene St. from Christopher Columbus Drive (to 2nd St.) will now be North Bound traffic only

2. Washington St. from 2nd St. (to Christopher Columbus Dr.) will be South Bound traffic only

- 1-year construction project

Proposed to begin on Monday, April 12, 2010

Please expect traffic delays and/or plan alternate route

1. Initial Phase - Christopher Columbus Drive (beginning on Monmouth St.) will be reduced to one East bound lane after 9:00 a.m.

2. We will keep you updated during the project as the traffic patterns change

jklm is correct. Washington will become one way south from 2nd to Montgomery and Greene will be one way north from Montgomery to 2nd. They changed the signs a long time ago because this was supposed to be done by now.

A Condominiums were supposed to do the site work of putting the traffic lights in as part of the deal in receiving their PILOT. But of course, as soon as they finished the actual building, they claimed they had no more money and reneged on their responsibilities for the 2nd Street interchange.

Now it is up to the city to take on this project and they have finally started working on it. They just poured a new portion of the left turn lane island. So it's slowly but surely moving along.

I'm pretty sure that City Councilman Steve Fulop can answer this one. I'd email him through his website.

It is beyond stupid, makes leaving Paulus Hook very hard. I have no idea why, perhaps light rail related?

Probably the same reason that there are all kinds of stupid traffic and parking configurations in that area. What that reason is, I do not know

It was two way years ago. Not sure why they changed it.

Why is Washington St. one-way between Montgomery and Pearl (Muscle Maker Grill)? The road is wide enough to accommodate two way traffic!
