Agreed. They sell a double-sized can for $20. The cheapest generic I've seen elsewhere is a standard-sized can at Target for $12 or $13. All the generic formula I've ever checked the label on is made by the same company. It's got the same ingredients as the brand name stuff.

They make the buggy self checkouts at the HD look like perfection. Whoever contracted for those machines should be fired. I got though with no machine errors just once.

The BJ's in East Rutherford has liquor. You really need a car to get there though.

We like the produce. Not ceaper than the fruit markets but consistently good quality.

one somewhat recent positive development at bj's: the inclusion of self-checkout lanes. this greatly speeds up the checkout process, even when the place itself is packed. this, however, assumes 2 things;

1. the lanes are actually working properly. on my last trip, only 2 out of the 4 (or 6?) self checkout lanes were working; the rest were off.

2. the people using the checkout lanes actually know what the hell they're doing. it's frustrating to sit behind doofus a and doofus b when they barely know how to program a VCR , let alone use the self checkout lane.

3. there is no official 'max items per lane' (at least from what i can see), but most people using these lanes are those who would otherwise use the express checkout lane. why, then, some people use the self checkout lane with 50 items is beyond me. maybe bj's should put up signs with an item limit.. 10 items or less?

You could save a lot more by buying Target or Berkley and Jensen brand instead of Pampers.

Gallon of milk at BJ's = $1.99.

Everywhere else is at least $1 more.

Always be wary what you buy at BJ's.

I just found one of the worst deals at BJ's tonight:
108 Newborn Pampers for $29.90

At Target:
84 Newborn Pampers for $18.99

In other words:
216 newborn Pampers for $59.80 at BJ's
252 newborn Pampers for $56.97 at Target

The insult to injury was that I had a $5 off coupon at BJ's for the diapers and Target's price for the diapers (sans coupon) was still cheaper...

So I was at BJs the other day buying paper towels and just out of curiosity I checked the prices over at Shoprite. BJ's is definitely the better buy especially for Bounty select-a-size. I also bought monster pack of boneless pork chops for $2.39lb; they were $2.59lb at SR. They were at least an inch and half thick so I cut them all in half lengthwise and froze them in packages of 4 servings. We had them for dinner the other night they were mm mm good. We also bought a package of Johnsonville Brats to bring to bbq on Sunday. Johnsonville Brats are about $4.50 for 5 sausages at SR; they cost about $8.50 for 12 at BJs. Chicken you have to be more cautious about there, if you compare the price per lb, it?s sometimes less and sometimes more. We also got a giant quart of Cherry Garcia for $5 or $6, they usually cost more than $4 for pint at SR. We were going to get a 2 pack of Simply Orange but decided it was too much quantity for the two of us, the price per volume was less then the grocery store. My bf bought a year supply razor blades. We thumbed through the books and I bought a 2010 Atlas for the car for $10 (normally costs $25). In fact most of books they had were steeply discounted. Last year I hosted a bbq and bought 2-4 gallon boxes of water that we didn?t open, they took them back with no problem. I think they only thing that sucks about BJs is the long checkout lines on the weekends, but I go mostly during the week when it?s a bit emptier. The mascarpone was a lot less expensive and if you?re making tiramisu then you need the large container anyway which is harder to find at the regular grocery store. For the small stuff I go to the AP most of the time. I hate SR, once in awhile I go there because it?s in the same parking lot as BJs, then only for something small like a clove of garlic or alcohol. God I wish BJs had alcohol.

Hudson County's liquor laws are freakish, although if I had to choose between them and Bergen's Blue laws, I guess I'd keep them.

Diapers, baby wipes, veggie burgers, frozen grilled chicken, cereal! I only wish I had a car - I would buy even more stuff. Love BJs.

Yeah, actually we do.

Gotta be careful at BJs about what you buy. A lot of the goods aren't a cent cheaper than at Wal Mart or Target despite the fact that you're forced to buy a 6 or 8 pack of whatever.

A lot of the dry goods and canned goods are not very good deals at all.

One particularly good deal was the Berkley & Jensen Baby formula. It was roughly 1/2 as costly as a comparable Enfamil formula. The savings on that alone more then covered the membership fee....

I can second that opinion on the optical. I don't have the exact dollar figures off the top of my head, but I remember that my Acuvue Oasys contact lenses were 50% off of what my optometrist charged.

The prices on tires were pretty good too.

Brilliant idea! Maybe next time I'll bring my fishing scale, and weigh each product. Otherwise it's voodoo since "sheet count" is meaningless if the sheets vary so tremendously in thickness.

well actually the trick is to look at the linear feet. Or the sheet count. Usually Scott tissue has the best cost per linear feet for single ply tp. The softer stuff is usually 2 ply but has a lot less sheets and linear ft.

Single ply tp is for prisons and cheapskates.

When I'm wiping my butt I'll take 2 ply, thank you very much.

"Back-in-the-day", AE, Diner's and Carte Blanche (are they even around any more?) were all called "T&E" cards, Travel & Entertainment, since you didn't have a credit line established with any of them. So long as you paid off your bill monthly you could charge virtually an unlimited amount. However, over the last 20+ years all of the T&E companies started to extend their marketing horizontally to generate additional revenue streams, making deals such as the Costco AE card you refer to above, that has no credit limit. Unlike the original AE cards, these partnership cards allow you to carry monthly balances. The reason is simple as Brewster also pointed out, in that credit cards/T&E cards all want you to carry over monthly balances so you generate high interest on your balance and thus increase their revenue stream split with, by example, Costco & American Express.

However save more than Costco or BJ's by paying off all your credit cards by transferring the balances to the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. The Aug 22, 2009 NYT column, Your Money by Ron Lieber, entitled "Maybe it's Time to Change Credit Cards", details how after a $20 fee to join you can transfer your credit card balance to PenFed "...and pay 2.99 percent interest forever once you pay a balance transfer fee of 2.5 percent of the deb you move over, and as long (as) you make your payments on time."

Equal is much cheaper at BJ's than ShopRite, @ something like $13+change for a box of 700. It lasts me a long time except when my friend visits me and she goes through a box in a week drinking tea more than anyone I've ever met.

I keep a spreadsheet on items as I'm on a fixed monthly budget, and even for a single guy BJ's saves me money.

Simple. They have to pay the transaction fee but the customer pays the card interest, no skin off their nose.

As I understand it, Costco asked VISA/MC for reduced transaction charges, and they refused, so Costco told them to F#$% themselves. Another reason I like Costco. Forgive me, but this is another cartel story!

I don't know about the Costco issued cards, but AmEx is different in that you are not supposed to carry a month to month balance. It's a minor difference of credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) versus charge cards (AmEx, Diner's Club).

They do offer credit cards though, formerly Optima and these days, Blue. If the Costco card offers an interest baring carryover, it probably a Blue-like card.

The part about Costco not accepting credit cards is COMPLETELY inaccurate. Costco accepts American Express credit cards, as well as debit cards, cash, checks, and store gift cards.

No, I am not an employee, or even remotely related to anyone employed by Costco. I am just a loyal customer. I have been a member since 1997. Back then, the only credit card they accepted was Discover Card, which changed in late 1998 or 1999.

And I agree with whoever said that comparing BJs to Costco is a non-starter. Costco is in a whole different level.

Recently acquired trivia: the average american uses 54 sheets of TP per day. No report on the thickness of that TP.

Comparing the comparison (?) to the great Whole Foods debate is not accurate, WF is clearly a store with a stated difference in mission from SR, BJ's has no such distinction from Costco other than inferiority.
