Just to be argumentative in a thread NOT about dogs or politics (and to keep this thread about something nice bumped up), when I was in design school we did not do figure drawing freshman year at all, and not much later. It's possible that they figured everyone (except me) had had years of it in HS, but there's lots of other things to draw besides the human. One summer class focused entirely on "weedscapes", explicitly about learning to use a vocabulary of marks, something you won't learn doing figures.

I've told people for decades that drawing isn't an art, it's a craft, something anyone can learn to do competently with enough practice. It was once required of any educated person in the age before easy photography, particularly of military officers.

That said, most of my drawing these days is CAD or Sketchup.

This is great news - I've never been able to find a serious figure drawing open session in the city (besides some gimmicky burlesque meetup). Love that its here in JC.

Thanks for posting this.

** Studying art in high school "nude modeling" was not allowed where I grew up, but serious students were encouraged by their teachers to attend the open sessions held at the nearby community college & universities. We'd carpool once a week to the sessions and it helped tremendously (artistically & portfolio wise for art college).

This is a digression, and I apologize. I don't see a problem with schools choosing not to represent specific religions, and for a good reason: it has absolutely no place in a public forum. I don't need my son coming home crying and asking why they nailed some man to a stick.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I do not have a problem with artistic nudes, though I would be suspicious of some of the people that are overly enthusiastic about it. That is all.

I have done nude modelling for "study" classes and that's all it is.

Oh well hope it works out.

And I've done "bikini" modeling at a Vo-Tech, hence the explanation as to why some classes are done partially clothed. The other stuff was in reply to brewster's post regarding censorship in educational settings.

As far as the ban on Christmas, evolution, nudes in art...etc. I'm referring to what's happening in schools not life in general. Try attending your kids' "winter" or "holiday" performance in December. There will not be any decorations or songs in reference to any holidays, unless of course the entire gamut of chanukah, kwanzaa..etc are mentioned. I know, I know, a bit of a digression but DTSteve28 this is in response to the fox 5 comment.

It is not Porn it is a nude study. Either you attend because you wish to study (whether it be female or male) or do not.

Parson's Grad here.

Have no idea where fig leaves and Christmas and half Jewish came to be. No insult at all.

I have done nude modelling for "study" classes and that's all it is.

Oh well hope it works out.

Christmas has reached a level of having essentially zero actual significance in our society to everyone but our corporate overlords, but to say people want to "ban" it is ludicrous. You watch too much Fox News.

I was hoping to bring a minor to a local drawing class, in fact. Perhaps the original poster has PG classes, though he did not clarify that detail in his subsequent response anyway.

By the way, not all jazz music is meant to be relaxing.

If she were to model in a high school or Vo-Tech where there are minors under 18, then yes she would have a bikini on. Being that this is at a private gallery, she probably will be nude. Are you like totally psyched?! Bring some jazz CDs with you to calm your nerves.

Funny, I drew and photographed nudes at The New School when I was 16, and wasn't traumatized. I was uncomfortable drawing male genitalia, but that's part of learning to be a mature artist. The nanny state strikes again. Do high school art history classes today have fig leaves or black rectangles on the naughty bits in Renaissance paintings?

Parsons? Sufficient to say that wasn't high school level instruction was it? :) Probably for exceptional art-focused students within a few years of graduation? Not 14 year old freshmen I'm guessing?

I think it would be avoided in high school not so much for the pruient interests but more because 14 and 15 year olds are idiots by nature & couldn't handle a real live naked person in a classroom. Those that could are going to head off to art school anyway in a few years and will get their full share of nude models.

They probably do have fig leaves. Some schools are teaching "intelligent design" instead of evolution after all. And on the other end of it, you have pc morons trying to ban Christmas. (This is coming from a half-jew btw)

These seem to be two very different people or maybe one curious person leading two very different lives.

Glad to hear about this though. I have often searched for figure drawing groups in jc but never came up with anything!
