I didn't think they've been around since Feudalism Times.

Oh wait, the peasants.

I used to come across them often over 10 years ago. The area surounding the Jersey ave light rail stop behing the Boys Club used to have a good amount of them before it was built. I used to see as many as 6 different ones some times, dozens of rabbits, ground hogs, garter snakes, salamanders and brown snakes. That area was also invested with ticks.

There are seasonal bird walks offered by the Interpretive Center along with other activities. I don't see anything listed after March, but you can give them a call. I am sure they will have something for Spring/Summer.

Given the large number of birds that pass through the park, particularly during spring and fall migrations, I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be any organized bird walks. I know there is one in September that is held in conjunction with the Meadowlands festival, but I've never come across anything else. NJ Audubon doesn't seem to do anything there.

Would there be interest in starting up one? I'd be happy to try to organize something if there is interest. I'm not an expert (avid birdwatcher, but not an ornithologist) so I would defer to someone else more qualified if they are interested in leading a group.

There used to be a few pheasants in the park. I used to see them a few years ago, but not in the last couple of years. I really hope they are back. This is pretty close to the bird I used to see at LSP:

There also used to be 2 Guinea Hens (I suppose someone let them loose) that lived by the Interpretive Center, but I heard they met a terrible demise. I used to photograph them often, they were my favorites.

If you go to www.folsp.org/ the Friends' web site, there is a listing of animal photos in Liberty State Park. Years ago, I saw wild turkeys.

There have been occasional pheasant sightings in LSP. Wild Turkeys are also seen there - and are somewhat more common.

Pheasant's are common to Liberty State park. As they are pretty stealthy birds (like wild turkey's), they are typically hidden from view among the tall grasses of the park. You have a better chance of seeing them either in the very early morning (after sunrise) or late afternoons (before sunset) -- typically in the mowed areas adjacent to the taller grasses. Happy bird watching!

Walking my dogs on Sat morning, I saw a fairly large bird just around the 911 memorial. When we got closer, it retreated into the bushes.

Just wondering if anyone else saw it and knows if the Liberty State park has any Pheasants?
