I agree with your sentiments exactly. I remember being really pissed at the fare situation when I took NJ Transit from NY Penn to Newark Airport. It is a complete rip off. I am assuming that the fare situation is the way it is because NJ Transit figures mostly tourists will be using the NY Penn to Newark Airport system and most cities/governments are more than willing to fleece tourists.
Now I take the path to Newark Penn and take a $15.00 cab from there to Newark Airport. I end up being dropped off right at the terminal entrance at Newark Airport and all for just about the same expense.

There are a lot of things that don't make sense about the EWR station. Yet another example of the Port Authority's leadership.

this morning at the WTC hub i paid $30 for 2 adult one way NY Penn -> EWR, which i thought was a lot
so i checked their website www.njtransit.com NY Penn -> Newark Penn $4 and, like i paid, NY Penn -> EWR = $15 ($5 airtrain so a $10 fare) so why do you get hit with an extra $6 penalty? i understand EWR is slightly further down the track, but NY Penn -> Elizabeth comes up as $5.50 and Elizabeth is even further south down the track than the airport. is this really just a tax for people getting off at the airport? my other purpose for posting (besides complaining) is to let people know.. u should take the PATH to newark and switch to NJ transit ($7.75 - but not super convenient when one is coming from midtown) or faster: take the PATH to JSQ and take a $30 taxi from there (which is what we'll do next time)

I took the rail only option back in January. (Path to Newark Penn, NJ transit to EWR, Airtrain to Terminals) and my take on it is that if you are traveling with one person this option makes sense. Getting back to JC was a little annoying because I had to wait at the EWR transit stop for 40 min until the next train arrived. (It was late evening, 10ish I believe)
However when I went to EWR in March with a friend we decided to take a taxi, fares range from $28 to $35 each way. However, I do not recommend using the yellow cabs that you get at the airport because they cost around $50.

I wouldn't bother with the Path either. I've considered it myself, but seemed too confusing with transfers etc. If you're traveling from midtown Manhattan, I would either to the Penn to EWR for $15 or take the Newark Liberty Airport Express bus run by Olympia Trails(Coach USA). Pick up at Port Authority (41st St) and it goes to EWR. The one way fare is $15 (round-trip is $25). Consider what time you are leaving though, because a bus might not be a good way during rush hour.

I've done it as well - I agree, it's not horrible because a decent number of trains stop at the airport, but just allow time. Last time it was mid-day and the next train was delayed for 20+ minutes. I got anxious and just took a cab from the train station to the airport (there are a ton that sit there) and it was about 20 bucks.

Why take the path from 33rd to Newark to change to NJ Transit? Just jump on NJ Transit at NY Penn Station. The train goes to Newark Penn, then Newark airport where you'll jump on the free shuttle. It's very easy. I've done it several times.
Travel time is only about 30 minutes, and trains leave from NY Penn about every 20 minutes during rush hour. It's much faster than dealing with traffic on the roads.

Easiest I think would be to take the PATH to Newark Penn Station and the #62 bus to the Airport. The bus takes 20 minutes and costs $1.35. Fewer connections, plus cheaper.

The path doesn't go directly to Newark airport. You'll need to go to Newark Penn, hop on a NJ Transit train for one stop, and then you can pick up the airtran.
I've done it a bunch of times, and while it isn't the most efficient way to get there (PATH to NJ Transit to airtran), it isn't horrible. It depends on the time of day too-- middle of the day, or rush hour, the trains move pretty quickly. after 8 pm though, the wait for the NJ Transit train could be longer. All that said, if you're starting around 33rd street, I would just get on a NJ Transit train from Penn Station NY and go straight to the Newark Airport stop. That way you can cut out the path leg and the Airtran portion of the trip takes about 5 minutes.

You might be better off taking the PATH to Hoboken and taking an NJ Transit train to EWR. I've never tried the PATH to Newark to Airtrain, but NJ Transit usually works fine for me.

anyone ever take the path train (at 33rd) to Newark to get on the airtran to get to the airport?
I'm trying to figure out how long this is going to take me coming from midtown manhattan. or if its just faster to get a cab once i get into jersey. anyone ever taken the airtrain/tran? thanks! ps why do i have to hit submit 10 times before it stops telling me my time has expired!
