Re: Parking garages/lots downtown

I lived on 2nd at Jersey in 2006-2007. Don't know how much the neighborhood has changed since then, but parking wasn't terrible when we lived in the area. Jersey was cleaned in the morning (8-10am I think) and 1st and 2nd weren't cleaned until the afternoon, so you could generally get a spot on Jersey easily mid morning. I believe Erie was also a different time of day. So you might be parking a block or two away, but as long as you're not trying to move the car at 8am, you'll be fine.

I looked this up earlier this year - automobiles are specifically excluded from the UEZ program. Sorry I don't have a link to prove it, but everyone else posting seems to echo that you have to pay the full 7%.

How are the drink prices, and do they have any happy hour specials?

Jewelry appraisal?
#4

I'm looking for a place, preferably in Jersey City if possible, to have a diamond engagement ring appraised. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I know Diamond Hut in Newport Center Mall has an appraiser, has anyone used them? I've heard non-independent appraisers can give you an inaccurate appraisal and encourage you to trade in your jewelry for one of their items, so I'm a little wary ofan appraiser affiliated with a store.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Fulop proposes new NJ Turnpike extension to ease Holland Tunnel traffic now cutting through Downtown

From mid-November until around mid-April, they must have changed the traffic light patterns at the end of the turnpike ramp (where traffic alternates with 1&9) due to construction at 1&9. I don't know that they changed for a fact, but I drive that way daily to my office in Newport and I know that during that time, the traffic delays I experienced on the turnpike ramp, approaching the turnoff to Jersey Ave., were minimal. As soon as they reverted to the "old" 1&9 traffic pattern, traffic backups to the Columbus Ave. exit became a regular occurance.

So maybe the answer is to adjust the traffic and light patterns where turnpike and 1&9 merge on 12th St? Seems like a much cheaper way to reduce backups on the turnpike than building a new off ramp would be, and the reduced delays would encourage people to stay on the turnpike and not take the JC local streets as a shortcut.

Or maybe that would all just be too easy and logical?

I can't speak to your other questions, as I lived in downtown for a year, not Journal Square. However, I did work in Tribeca so I can answer about the commute.

I had a ~40 minute door to door commute which isn't so bad, would only be a few minutes more from Journal Square. The part I didn't like about it was I was constantly moving that entire time. Walk to train station - wait 2-3 minutes for train - 15 minute train ride - walking up all the stairs in WTC - 15 minute walk from WTC to office (Greenwich and Hubert). But a 40 minute door to door commute is hard to beat in the NYC area.

I also have experience commuting from JC out on 78 towards Morristown. Generally not too bad, as its the reverse commute, but can get ugly if there's an accident.

I'm not familiar with this area, but my bet is it's not a place appropriate for a game of paintball. A car, house, or other passerby could get hit. My boyfriend was shot at once with a paintball by someone in an apartment on the corner of 2nd and Jersey. He called the cops, and they showed up and searched the building. The cops told him if they would have caught the guy who did it, he would have been charged with aggravated assault, as it was with a weapon.

Sure, its just paint, but it still hurts to get hit with one.

but these places in the $4-500k range are right in the wheelhouse of first time home buyers and my only point was - they are still not affordable.

I'm pretty sure I know which condos you're talking about here, having seen several listing recently in a building in Paulus Hook that have "seems too good to be true" prices but excessively high taxes and maintenance. Having watched the "entry level" JC real estate market for the past 8 months, I think that these units aren't really representative of most entry level units on the market.

Your basis for saying these condos target first time home buyers is that the price is in the "4-500k" range. However, factored into the price are the higher than average taxes and maintenance - were these more in the range of the average for the area - the asking price/price per square foot would be more in line with the average, thus putting them out of the range of first time buyers.

I totally agree that buying is more expensive than renting. Just don't make the mistake of looking only at asking price in determining comparables. Its more complicated than that.

Re: [Grove and Bay Street] Parked car - hit and run

My mom was hit in a hit and run (car was totaled) but she got the license plate. Turns out he didn't have insurance, and although it took close to a year, eventually something happened where his wages were garnished to pay back the deductible my mom paid, and the insurance company.

This was in PA however, so not sure if things work the same way in NJ. Best of luck. Car accidents always suck.

Easiest I think would be to take the PATH to Newark Penn Station and the #62 bus to the Airport. The bus takes 20 minutes and costs $1.35. Fewer connections, plus cheaper.

It's a WHOLE OTHER STATE! If you live here and work in NYC you HAVE TO pay NJ state tax.

While you do have to pay NJ state tax, a big plus of JC is you don't have to pay NYC income tax (which is pretty big, on top of NY state tax.)

Re: Dentist Recommendation

I like Tribeca Dental. (I know you said not in the city, but its only a 5-10 minute walk from WTC.) If you can go during the day (ie, not early morning or after 4pm), you should be able to get an appointment fairly soon. I usually go on my lunch break for checkups and cleaning, and have never had to wait more than 10 minutes, and am usually in and out in under 50 minutes.

Don't know about their prices since I have insurance. When I was first searching for dentists covered in my insurance, I was hesitant to try them because their website seems to really emphasize cosmetic procedures. However, they have never even brought them up while I was in the office.
