Guess I was wrong, but when it closed down, I looked in the windows a few times while walking by and I could swear that it was totally burned out. I guess it was just demo'd.

Was definitely not what you'd call high end (or even "clean"), but remember getting a pattie melt, fries and a coke there for like under 6 bucks. Plus, 24 hour diners are pretty much extinct downtown these days.

+1. The Flamingo burning down was a huge loss to downtown. Unfortunately, a place like that is pretty much irreplaceable since it was an authentic, greasy spoon dive right out of the 60's. I don't think City Diner could be more opposite of the Flamingo. And not in a good way.

I was at City Diner with my family back in October on a Saturday evening and they overcharged us for the New York Stip Steak and the Jumbo Fried Shrimp Basket. They charged us $2 over the menu price for each. We didn't discover it until after we left. The coffee that my brother-in-law ordered was not fresh. It probably set there all afternoon. Weekends are slow.

Check your receipt against the menu.

I grew up going to Al's, but the last time I was there (3 months ago) the parking lot turned into a nightmare in the hour and a half we were in the place.

There was about 20 extra cars in the lot, and they were all lined up blocking the parked cars in. people just standing around smoking up. I'm not sure if that was an isolated incident, or a regular occurance though..

go to the flamingo at 2am on a saturday morning... the waitress will be overworked, the tables will not be very clean, the service will be slow...

but much much much worse: the customers are all jerks. i've seen two racially-fueled shouting matches there, and one time the cops had to come.

that late-night, after the bar diner scene like you see down the shore... or anywhere... well at flamingo it becomes sand bar + JC = scumbaggedityness all around.

and i was there for research purposes, not a BLT extra mayo

So after living in the area for over 4 years I've finally decided to try Miss America...Their pancakes are AWESOME!!!

Overall, it's a great local joint.

Other than that I'm a huge fan of Al's Diner.

Brownstone is good, but not worth waiting in line for...

spa is a decent option after a night of bar hopping in hoboken. not exactly one of my faves but it'll suffice. i have come to hate the alternative in hoboken (malibu diner, uptown).. worst food ever and way way overpriced. if im sober, though, i'll still make the drive to coach house.

vip is 'meh', although every time i've gone there late night there have been rowdy/undesirable clientele inside.

If you find yourself heading to up River Road along the Hudson River waterfront (like to go shopping in Edgewater or whatever), I recommend the River View Diner in North Bergen.

I particularly enjoy their gyros and complimentary cole slaw.

Also, they serve good breakfasts and it's always bustling.

Here's their Yelp.com page for more details.

I'm amazed at all of these entries here regarding the service at my favorite diner The Brownstone. We have been going since the days it was The Newport - we go at least once a week for the past 9 years - have NEVER had an issue! The BEST pancakes in the whole town! I've shared dishes with my boyfriend for years - never have been charged. Service has always been good to excellent. The family knows us - knows us well - and have always been treated great there. The pancakes are great, but also the dinners are wonderful. The pasta dishes, the salads, etc etc etc! The Brownstone is always busy - has been for years. I'm just so surprised at all of the many negative things being said here on this page.

I've been going there since it was the shabby little Newport Pancake House too.

It looks much better now as the rebuilt Brownstone Diner & Pancake Factory.

I can't believe they're already undergoing such a major expansion later this year!

Regarding the food, I've found that it has ranged from good to outstanding.

The service has ranged from crappy to fantastic (depending on the server).

This is bit off the topic, but does anyone know anything about a place called "Red Door Diner (cafe?)"?

It's right by Communipaw and grand. Looks interesting....but didn't have guts go go in... I don't even know if they are still in business or not.

Greenvillechick - def give brownstone a try. Service is usually good but sometimes it's off. Typically it's Sat and Sunday mornings when they're swamped, so I give em a pass.

Justin - Yeah SPA is there and it's still wonderful at 3am.

Yes. Have to say the Coach house again....It's still great. Used to go there in grammar school. ....Lived a few doors down from the VIP for 10 years. It was consistently terrible. My personal favorite diner is the Spa in Hoboken. Of course, that was back in my Hoboken years at 3 am when a leather boot would have been delicious, but still. It gets my vote...And, who's better than the waiters there.....Hhmmmm...Is the Spa even there anymore?

Opening this post up again because of the whole "brownstone" baby thing... I always wanted to go there, I dont have kids.. but the other posters seemed like they didnt really like the service... VIP waitresses SUCK! I had an older white woman who rolled her eyes, damn near threw drinks at us, and had convos wit other staff while we were waiting on her... I complained to the manager... he SHRUGGED his shoulders... I definately am going to try Coach House it seems like it gets awesome reviews... Al's is decent .....

The VIP it's relaxing, spacious, food is good & reasonably priced. The wait staff knows when to come by your table and when to leave you alone. They're not running around crazy like they do at the Couch House. Since they renovated that place their prices have shot up. The VIP has an atmosphere that reminds me of an urban city where people can be to themselves. Parking is also great.

i don't think the inclusion (or lack thereof) of a salad bar should define a diner.. i'd probably go with cuisine and late night opening (or 24 hours) as the defining factors.

one gripe i have about the coach house, though - with all their recent renovations , the prices have steadily been going up a bit. i don't mind, though, because the service is still great as is the food

their $15 early dinner menu is still my fav. of any local diner/ cheap restaurant.. all u can eat salad bar + entree + 2 sides + glass of wine or drink + dessert. i usually wind up with enough food for 2 days lol

have i given love for coach house lately?

here is a great article with interviews of the family who has run the place since 1939.

whether or not it has a salad bar, it still has atmosphere of a diner without the tackiness of a wanna-be place like the park west in totowa.

Coach House gets my vote. Prime rib is very good and the salad bar is always fresh. Worst: VIP diner which used to be okay: Dirty, limited menu, and rotten atmosphere.

Ha ha. That's what I used to say. I thought everyone else was crazy. You'll see. I know my post is on here elsewhere so I won't recount the details. And yes, we went for years, yes, we knew the family, etc. etc. But some people have to see for themselves. I know, I was one of them.

ETA: what happened to me at Brownstone.

So, Brownstone or VIP, whatever . . . when this stuff happens, talk with the guy who owns the business and you probably will get much better treatment.

.

I subscribe to this advise, and in speaking with a few restaurant owners they have shared their frustration with getting staff to understand the value of customer service and taking a customer's money when they are waiving it them.

My approach may not be the best. On the first offense I give the wait person a good tip and explain to them what I thought was lacking in addition to speaking to the manager or owner. When I go back I offer a hardy and sincere greeting hoping to show there are no hard feelings. If the service doesn't improve, on the second visit I reflect my dissatisfaction in the tip.

I want these establishments to work, and continue to support them, hoping that as density grows, business will improve and the owner may be able to find better staff.

It will be interesting to see what happens.
