I was there last night, and it seemed to be reasonably busy. There were three people who looked like they might JCList users eating a table, a woman ahead of me with what I think was a big takeout order, and me.
For parents of children who are picky eaters, one nice thing about Savas is that it sells a plain chicken cutlet and a plain ball of mashed potato.

I love boiled pierogies (potato, spinach etc) but Savas won't make them to order - same problem she had when she was up the hill - microwaving pierogies makes them rubbery!
Pierogies need to be boiled up fresh or I can't eat them - somehow she can't understand that. She is REALLY nice and I wish her well but I still gotta go to the East Village, Greenpoint or the Wallington NJ area to get my fix.

Okay, so I got off the PATH train and walked past and had to decide between perogies (my DNA was begging me) or a healthy veggie juice at the juice bar down the way.........this time the juice won out, why? Because I can't eat at Savas everyday......or can I????? I swear I've been waking up at night craving Savas. I think I'll just buy a plate and keep it in my fridge, OMG, I think I have a plate of leftovers in their now...........SEE YA.

Yesterday, the owner of Giggles "N Barks (kid's clothing store on Warren) and I had lunch at Sava. We ate up the place, meatball stew, beet salad (OMG!), pierogies (is 6 enough? - no? - well have 6 more), cabbage, plus blintzes for dessert. Total bill, $17 bucks.

Went here for the first time on Saturday and went back again on Tuesday. It's a dangerous place, I could eat here 3 times per week! I went in 5 minutes before closing and they loaded up 2 plates to go with a variety of everything they have, only $18.00! Great place and highly recommended.

Just came from Savas and ordered 12 perogies and a jar of kraut = $10. Love the food and the prices!! Can't wait to dig in.

These are the kind of places that make JC a great place to live. A great diner experience, no frills, prices for every type of customer, cool digs, down to earth and just all about great home cooked food. This is a great place for single people on a Sunday evening just wishing they had a polish mama to make 'em some hearty plates of food.

I finally tried Sava. It is excellent Polish home cooking. It is reasonably priced.
This is the kind of restaurant that makes Jersey City a good place. If the quality is consistent, this will be a serious contender for my favorite restaurant in Jersey City.

does anybody else think that whole stretch of Grove could be a little more welcoming?
maybe better lighting would encourage PATH commuters to walk that way. I take a slightly longer route home, up Newark to Erie, just because it feels less deserted.

I agree that flyers are a better idea. She needs to get the word out to all those people leaving the Path train and going in other directions.

She needs some help with marketing. At least with distributing flyers. Maybe a barter deal can be struck in exchange for free food.

I am going to feature Sava on my blog to help her website rank higher. I also have readers who don't live in downtown, and they might visit the place once they learned about it on my site.
@super_furry Can I use your pictures that you posted here (few pages back)? ----- I am also going to take this opportunity to let you know that if you have a business, service, event, or anything related to JC (downtown or anywhere), let me know so I can post it on my site (see sig) as well.

We ordered take-out last night, and yeah, it's really good. I had the best stuffed cabbage I've ever eaten. My husband went in, and he said the ladies in there are absolute dolls. They called him baby about ten times as well as darling, sweetheart etc. It was like the Polish grandmothers he never had.
He said the place was empty though. If you like it, get the word out to people.

Okay, we just came back from this place and IT WAS FREAKING AMAZING. Wow, we are so damned excited. The food was very authentic and large portions. Just amazing comfort food. We took some to go. It's dangerous, with those prices and portions and the comfort of it all, it's going to be a regular place we go. I'M SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS PLACE! This is a Saturday afternoon eat until you burst type of joint. I grew up with this food and I'm telling you - they know what they are doing.
LOVE IT AND HUGE THUMBS UP!!!!!! I can't wait to see this place full, it's got to get busier, people, please go, I don't want to see this place leave us! My husband just said he's going to bring his entire staff there for lunches now and get take out, he even figures he'll order special portions for tailgates, YUM.

I went in there for the first time last night, after reading reviews on here. The Polish Platter dish is excellent. You get keilbasa, pierogies, stuffed cabbage, and kraut. It was all phenomenal. I think the platter is $7.50. What a great deal! I wish them the best of luck.

I went to Sava's new location for the first time this weekend. This is the woman who fed me lunch when I was on jury duty, at her old location! This place is awesome.
I had the kielbasa and kraut (the latter is particularly yummy). My guest had the meatloaf with green beans, mashed potatoes, and some sort of cabbage stew. The meatloaf was a combo of beef and veal. The potatoes have gravy. The cabbage stew was like heaven. We drank a carton of currant juice with our meal. Yes, food is a cut above Tania's--she's just got to work on the business side of things to keep afloat. If she could better tap into the downtown lunch crowd, it would help.

Next time I will try that, di6--and I must say, the kielbasa was still delicious. The pierogies were really incredible; I had only tried commercially frozen before, so it was a delightful surprise. Looking forward to trying the stuffed cabbage and many other dishes!

From how she described the kielbasa, it's cooked during the day and are usually in the metal heating trays with sauerkraut. She worries that certain dishes become too dry when they're sitting in the heating trays for long. So she often removes various items from the trays (include peirogies) and then heats up a serving to order. If you want the kielbasa fried instead of microwaved, I'm fairly sure she would accommodate. If possible, try the kielbasa for lunch (soon after it is freshly cooked). I hear it's very good.
Myself - I'll eat a whole tray of Savas' peirogies microwaved, fried, grilled, frozen... whatever.

I must confess I was a little disappointed when I saw the kielbasa go into the microwave...was looking forward to either a grilled or heated in sauerkraut flavor.

Kielbasa can be microwaved, it can even be eaten straight, its a cured meat. I like mine fried with ketchup...

that kielbasa had to be pre-cooked. I get a really good pre-cooked kielbasa at maloney's meat market near JSQ and microwave it because I'm disgusting

she's got a vinyl sign up there now, along with some festive grand opening flaggage. Luckily for her, she's right outside the boundaries of the VVP and Harsimus historic districts - otherwise I can see the Historic Preservation Gestapo hounding the poor woman to death or out of business over signage (vinyl not being "historic fabric")and other silly issues.

Had supper there the other night and will definitely return. But I have a question for those in the know about Polish food--is it customary to microwave kielbasa as opposed to boiling or frying? I really don't know, and figured maybe she prepared it that way because it was getting late, and maybe there weren't any ready to go.

Savas used to be way west on Newark Avenue by the Hudson County Court House. It was always a great place to get Klenjnoty chocolates. I haven't been to the new place yet, but if she still has them in stock you need to try them
