Compare JC to a location like Islington in London. It started out with a few good restaurants (they invented the gastropub near there http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/eagle).

It's probably as far away from Central London and its West End/Charlotte St eateries, as JC is to Manhattan. Now there are about 160 top quality restaurants within a 1/2 mile walk.

http://www.squaremeal.co.uk/search/re ... /islington/radius/1?map=1

Central London priced out the little guys. NYC is doing the same, and JC can only benefit.

Who cares about cool? Adding that "NY" would double our real estate values and drop our RE taxes 75%! (we'd have to pay full NYC income tax though...)

Do not worry, them people across the river have just elected themselves a new mayor, - and looking at his ideas, their real estate taxes will catch up with ours in no time.

Good point. Let's hope Jersey City doesn't get somehow transported to the Midwest.

Being associated to NYC is the ONLY thing that helps JC....If JC was exactly the same but moved to a different location - say the midwest....property values would drop by 90%

I've definitely heard people call it the 6th borough. Including this market:

I'm not sure what's so embarrassing about it. Maybe I'm not embarrassed easily

People are going to assign names to JC since we don't have a clear identity yet. For now the ID is affordable housing that's close to Manhattan but that will change as the RE market heats up.

A landing at Harsimus Cove, assistance from local collaborators, and quicker than you can say Jacques Derida, DTJC has been conquered and incorporated into NYC as the 6th boro. 100 comments later under the rubric of What to name us on JCList, it is decided to name us Van Vorst.

Kinda funny and telling that you suggest the annexation of ONLY Downtown. After all, smallest current Boro, Staten Island, has the population of the entirety of Hudson County. But there's a thought. Jersey would never let us go just on principle, but maybe a flat trade for Staten Island would work? All of S Jersey would vote for it!

MyFoxNY :

Jersey City Cuisine

In the shadows of Lower Manhattan is a brand new food scene that is rivaling some of the trendiest spots in New York City: that scene is in Jersey City.
