Sheesh! Is it too much to ask if the "non-working fountain" be repaired as part of the development. Why does it have to be demolished and replaced? I'm not opposed to it being moved but I remember a BS survey the city had several months ago where it was a foregone conclusion the fountain would be replaced due to the leading questions.

(This is related to the post below that has the renderings of the new tower. How could anyone be against replacing/moving that non-working fountain? aka 9/11 Memorial? aka Circle of Honor to a new location in that beautiful new plaza)

I'm happy to see that plans are going ahead to do something with the longstanding eyesore vacant lot at Journal Square, a civic embarrassment reminding all of us who live here that this is the land that urban planning forgot.
Lets consider the 95 million dollar tax abatement, or incentive, or whatever it is called, as "potential money" This money should go into enhancing the neighborhood right? Should all of that potential money be tied up in this one project? Wouldn't it be better to use some of it to spread around this forgotten district in the form of enhancing languishing infrastructure? For instance how much would it cost to repaint the stripes on our roads and maybe work harder at cleaning the trash off the streets? Maybe throw in some traffic safety enforcement? Sure I know this "money" doesn't actually exist in the present, its just money that won't be the responsibility of the developers. But maybe some of that same willingness to be creative with future tax revenues to make things happen could be manipulated in ways that could have a real and positive effect on the daily lives of those who live here? Flash forward ten years and the towers are up and running. The developers are very well off now and the PATH train is a nightmare. 95 million dollars DID NOT go into enhancing the infrastructure. The rest of the neighborhood has had to get along without it. Has anyone repainted the stripes on the roads yet? Did those of us who live here now have our lives enhanced?

N.J. awards $93M in tax breaks to Journal Square tower

The $205 million high-rise, which could house up to 744 residential units, will receive $34 million in tax breaks over 20 years. I'm definitely interested to see how the area develops and if journal squared will help transform it. To be honest, I'm kinda skeptical of the area will change, but I hope it's the start of something good. It'd also be nice to see some other projects break ground.

Ruling paves way for construction of Jersey City tower

Chris, here it is: Journal Squared, approaching 20 stories, is being done by KRE. That is Murray Kushner the estranged brother of Charlie Kushner. Next to Chase Bank is 3 Journal Square Plaza being done by Joe Panepinto, a political operative & no connection to the Kushners. One Journal Square is to be done by Jared Kushner, Charlie Kushners son, and the son-in-law of Donald Trump. With the similarities of names and addresses it is difficult to keep track.

I am trying to keep track of these projects in the works:
1. Journal Squared by Kushner - this is the one directly behind Journal Sq that is under construction and approaching 20 stories already. 2. 1 Journal Square Plaza - this is next to the Chase Bank also being done by Kushner and it looks like some preliminary work has started. 3. 1 Journal Square - the vacant lot mentioned in today's article that may also be done by Kushner. What other ones are there on the horizon that have a chance to go forward? What happened with the auction for the building that houses the JSQ Pub? I thought this took place in June but I have not heard any outcome/future plans for the site. After seeing the area in its present state for so many years I am really curious what the next 5-10 years will bring.

Excellent news for JSQ property owners. Not so great news for anyone upstream who relies on the PATH.
Once all of the new developments in the JSQ area are finished, these trains could be packed before leaving JSQ. Then imagine what it will look like once all the other developments are complete.

So, zoning has nothing to do with development decisions!! What an educated and informed statement. If you google Jersey City you see plenty of Buzz over the Healy years, the Wall Street Journal, USA today, the Times, ect. Get real, the turn around of Jersey City has been a 30 effort by many people, not the least of which has been the planning professionals of the city. Development of Journal Square and all those great buildings downtown started long before Steven to the oath of office. As a matter of fact, long before he every thought of moving into JC. Now, if you never left, you would know that.

This picture sums up Healy?s term in office for all Journal Square property owners. A field..err I mean lot of empty dreams.
 Mayor Healy?s term: November 12, 2004 - June 30, 2013 PS - the Journal Square 2060 Development Plan is not bringing developers to Journal Square, it just states how tall buildings can be.(except for the Robin Hood project) Like it or not Mayor Fulop has created a development buzz in Jersey City especially in Journal Square. So Healy don't get credit for the Journal Square Plan that started in 2007 and was adopted by the CC in 2010, but he takes the hit to the Robin Hood settlement. Also, the EDA grant of $35 million came under Healy, the planning board approval came under Healy, not Steve. Without that grant and planning board, there is no tower in Journal Square. Let give Steven credit for giving KRE the most lucritive tax abatement in the City's history!! You can cherry pick all you want, most of what you see today downtown and in Journal Square and around the city was started under Healy. Even the two project recently give massive EDA grants where stated under Healy and given lucritive long term tax abatements under Steven. Steven is doing it just the way Healy did it, vote against tax abatements as a councilman and push them as mayor. Wonderful how things have changed.

Things are just happening with the Claremont redevelopment, including the high rise complexes behind the Richard street light rail but if you were paying attention this was done back in 2011 when Fulop was a uknown councilman to the Greenville area.

When you say nothing happened under Healy, its not correct. The Journal Square plan happened under Healy. KRE received their approvals for there project under Healy and also their $35,000,000 of state grants under healy. Steve gave KRE the tax abatement. These projects don't happen over night. The Journal Square plan was key to getting these projects off the ground. Even Steve Fulop gives credit to the previous administration for putting the plan in place.
