Double check zoning and any redevelopment plan for that neighborhood.

Make sure you do your due diligence, especially regarding the potential for soil contamination. Will the city be responsible for any environmental responsibilities if they come up?

Tacking onto what Pebble explained, I know someone (a couple, really) who bought what was essentially a condemned property (I think it was bought from the city, but could be wrong) and they paid next to nothing. Something like 12K. This was about 4 or 5 years ago, on Monitor Street, almost directly behind The Foundry. Even if they had chosen to demolish and rebuild on the lot, they got an incredible deal. I have always wondered about their deal, and how they were able to secure it. If you can get into such an auction, you might be able to score an insane deal. Good luck!

If the City owns the property, they can only relinquish it via auction. Alternatively, if the property ends up in the redevelopment commission, you can end up with the land if it is allocated.
Check the papers as the city is required to publish a listing of what is up for auction when it goes up.

The city just gave 16 acres of prime development land (Turnpike exit, Light Rail Station) for free-ask for the same deal!

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on how to go about buying a vacant lot owned by the city? Its a small lot that is just going to waste.
