It should not surprise you at all. For some inexplicable reason, the city has FAILED 100% on devising and implementing a cohesive, unified IT plan that, among other things, incorporates all city agencies, administrations and departments under a single domain name and which sites can be independently accessed through the main city website. It is downright irresponsible for a city of our size in this day and age (and, particularly, this region) to be so deficient in technology matters, especially in light of our young and ambitious mayor.

But, as discussed in another JCLIST thread, what else can you expect when the position of CIO / CTO / IT Director was being shopped for a substandard salary?? The city should make it a priority to hire top notch IT talent to improve and/or implement new solutions that cater to what is an increasingly sophisticated population and which would help improve government services.

Thanks- I swam last Thursday morning. It was great- surprisingly the water was just a little chilly, really perfect after I got going on laps. I imagine this weather will make it a bit chilly.

The Johnston Avenue pool is open for the season. Until school gets out, there is an adult lap swim from 7 am till 10 am Monday-Friday. And then it opens for everyone in the afternoon again; I don't remember those times. The pool is also open on Saturdays and Sundays for everyone, but I cannot remember the hours, it might have been something like 12 noon till 6 pm.
I assume the hours change once the public schools are out for summer.

I haven't gone swimming in the pool, but I went in to take a look. It looks pretty nice to me. I swim at a community rec center where I work in the city, WV, and the Pershing Field locker rooms and pool are nicer and cleaner. The pool itself is huge compared to the rec pool in the city. During the weekends they have enough space to have 3 wide swimming lanes open, and dedicate the rest of the pool to open swim. I don't think the open swim disturbs the swimming lanes much.

The park itself has always felt safe to me, but I always go during daylight, haven't been there at night. However, don't think it would be much different at night.

Anyone been to Pershing Field's pool recently? Now that Johnston ave is closed, I need somewhere else to get my lap swimming fix. I read they had a major renovation done a few years back; can anyone vouch for whether it is clean/modern?

Back in the day that park was pretty sketchy with a lot of low level drug dealers hanging around - I know the Heights are changing but I haven't spent much time in that area.

Sadly, no. I dropped by yesterday to cool off and the workers said that it's closed for the season as of today. Wish they'd let the weather guide the schedule as opposed to the calendar - it was too cold to enjoy a morning swim for much of the past few weeks.

I went this morning when they opened at 9. There were half a dozen people there, most of them swimming laps. It's open for general swim at 9 on weekdays and 10 on weekends. The staff said it is often not busy in the mornings on weekdays and sundays. it was very nice and clean and the kiddie pool looks fun.

No out of town guests can use it. You must be a JC Resident and show ID (we use our drivers licenses). Kids do not need ID when with their parent/guardian.

does anyone know what the entry requirements are for the pool? do I need proof of JC residency?

I've got an out-of-town guest who'd love to use it, but I won't be able to accompany him. can he just stroll up?

We complain a lot around here. How about sending an email or leaving a message with the director or recreation, Ryan Strother to let him know what a great job Rosemary and Jamie have done in getting the pool up and running early.

It's definitely safe to walk from the HBLR station at LSP to the pool. During the Summer months, you will find the neighborhood comes alive, with people playing basketball at the courts right off Johnston Ave and more people walking around.

Expect a ? mile walk from/to HBLR. I can't address your safety concerns.

Also, for the record, the official name is Lafayette Pool & Aquatic Center. Not Johnston Ave Pool.

As for lap swimming, I just confirmed that in prior years the lap swimming hours were 7 AM - 9 AM, M - F. Here is the press release from 2012: Pool Schedule 2012. It will try and get a confirmation of lap swimming hours later this week if none are posted on the city website by then.

Mornings are definitely (or, were, in the past) for lap swimming, even during Summer months when school is out. I believe the first hour and two were such designated.

Afterwards, it gets really crowded to the point of being unpleasant.

And, I echo the comments of others: nice place, good facility. Lots of lifeguards on staff. Friendly people, for the most part. Starting in mid June, I will be going in the mornings to do laps in the mornings when not running.

In the afternoons, they've usually had 2-3 lanes reserved for lap swimming and then the vast majority of the pool open for free play. I think in the past, the mornings have been for adults-only lap swimming.

If you guys haven't been there before, it's a wonderful facility. I think this is the third year it will be open.

Ah, I should have read the sign more carefully. I think that there is an issue with getting more guards until the public high schools are out (which is almost the end of next month!). However, there was no reason this morning that they could not have opened the kid pool since there were two guards and just me swimming, lol.

If I remember correctly, last year before school let out, they would re-open the pool at like 3 or 4 and then go to 7.

It's at the corner of Johnston and Van Horne.

Finally, I just looked at the weather forecast. It will barely hit 60 degrees tomorrow and Thursday! That is weather for April not almost June. So swimmers may want a wet suit tomorrow.

During the time while there is "lap swimming", is part of the pool available for regular "free play" (for kids)? Or is the whole pool only available for lap swimming?

Very excited that it's open for lap swimming in the morning. My husband and I will be there going forward!

Have they given a sense of what kind of volume they need to stay open in the mornings?

Also, I can't recall...do they have kickboards?

Lafayette Pool - Google Maps

I think last summer it was usually open until around 7?
