The dead and dying trees are a result of improper care for newly planted street trees, with the added factor of a hot and dry summer. This issue is something that has on-going discussions with Public Works, aiming for a resolution. As far as global warming, we have started to plant trees that will be better adapted to changing temperatures zones. Much of what we plant in Van Vorst Park that use to be annuals, are now becoming perennials. parkman

It's not about one thing killing a tree. It's about multiple stressors combining to weaken and kill over time.
Take a look at the dead and dying trees all around you. This is a symptom of global warming.

For the heck of it, I went ahead and plotted temperature data for a station near JC for 2006 thru 2015. The data is posted online by NYSERDA Heating Degree Days (HDD) = The higher the number, the colder the year (the more you had to run your heat) Cooling Degree Days (CDD) = The lower the number, the cooler the summer (you run your A/C less) I applied linear trend lines to both data sets. The trends is slightly cooler winters and a very slight cooling trend during the summer.

This is not some phenomenon. We have had no rain until this week.

Overall, this summer has been rather dry in terms of rain. That would affect the trees.

Cold winters don't kill fungi spores, the cold actually preserves them. The enemy of fungi is desiccation (being dried out). The article linked was about a Anthracnose type fungi attacking the trees (is isn't fatal to a healthy tree). I am familiar with it. My tomatoes get attacked by it in late summer / early fall when the morning become cooler and damp. The fungi doesn't do much when it is hot and dry.

Global warming is serious but people will take it less seriously if we cry wolf about situations that don't apply.

The fungal disease overwinters in and on seeds, soil and garden debris. Cool wet weather promotes its development, and the optimum temperature for continued growth of the spores is between 75-85 degrees F. Moisture is required for development and germination of the fungus as well as for infection of the plant. http://www.planetnatural.com/pest-pro ... lant-disease/anthracnose/ Our average high temperatures are in that 75-85 degree window for three (almost four) months of the year. If, over time, that becomes four or five months, looks like this fungus would have more time to do its work. http://www.usclimatedata.com/climate/ ... ey/united-states/usnj0234

Warm winters don't kill the fungus and many of the other pests killing our trees.
Learn science.

Oh good grief...
Anthracnose (fungus) infections on trees thrive during cool weather. Warm weather retards the growth of the fungus. Is there anything left in the world not blamed on A comprehensive list of things caused by global warming

See all those dead leaves on the ground? That's not supposed to happen at this time of year. There's a number of things killing our trees, but they're all exacerbated by global warming.
