A long time ago, I lived in an apartment complex next to a somewhat wooded area in San Antonio, TX, and some of my neighbors would sometimes leave their trash outside their doors to bring it down to the dumpster later. Sometimes I would walk out of my unit and be faced with LARGE raccoons helping themselves to whatever tasty morsels they could get out of those bags. Those suckers were HUGE, and super smart. I developed a newfound appreciation for their wiles and street smarts. They would always "work" in teams of two, and whenever they were surprised by someone, they would split (one heading in one direction, and the other in the opposite direction) and would turn around once about 20 feet away and watch in which direction the human would head before deciding on their next move. I never felt threatened by the raccoons, but I always gave them wide berth and learned to respect their smarts.

Stay away from trashcans and streets on garbage collection nights and you'll generally be fine. Skunks love trash.

The skunks downtown are incredibly bold, and back down for no one.
If you've got a possum in your yard, please leave him. They eat loads of ticks, and are way less susceptible to rabies than their raccoon pals.

So it's that time of the year again.
Encounted a racoon in my backyard in downtown last week. Two nights earlier, it was a skunk. It was a surprise encounter between the two of us - it sneaked under the fence right where I was standing. It wasn't ready for me, I wasn't expeing a visit either. We both panicked. I peed a little, it sprayed a lot. But I was faster - ha! Better keep a look out - especially when you are walking your dogs.
