The real ones by 180 are more comfortable/warm than the generics in chinatown.

Thanks, I went there today. The cheapest ones they had were $30 after sale discount. I found some on Ebay for $6 including shipping. I'll try those first.

Let's hear it for Chester Greenwood
Born Dec. 4, 1858 and died Jul. 5, 1937

Besides being a scientist and a native of Farmington, Maine, he invented the earmuffs at the age of 15. One of Farmington's most known celebrities, he came up with the idea while skating. He made ear shaped loops out of a piece of wire and had his grandmother sew fur on them. In 1887 he made an improvement to the earmuffs by using metal bands and had them patented under the name 'Improvement in Ear Mufflers,' but manufactured them under the name of Greenwood's Champion Ear Protectors. Greenwood also invented the bottom whistling kettle, the mechanical mouse trap, and the spring steel rake, among many others. He is listed on the Smithsonian Institution's list of America's 15 Outstanding Inventors. He died in his native Farmington, in July 1937. On December 21, 1977, the town of Farmington declared that day to be Chester Greenwood Day.

Just about every little mom and pop street vendor in NYC has these. Don't pay more that $4.
