The fact that Campos & McCann are willing to fight to the death over a council seat in tiny Hoboken also shows how important the control of power is to the 2 machines battling it out in Hudson. In a uncorrupted system that wouldn't matter so much, but being able to direct tax money is key to keeping their power base and funding.

Gerry McCann is a bully and a low life. He's spent his life trying to intimidate people to work his way to the top. Every so often someone does beat the crap out of him, but he never seems to learn.

Things got ugly outside Hoboken Municipal Court yesterday morning as former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann and Frank Ladson Jr. got into a yelling match in front of a cop -- and Jersey Journal reporter Charles Hack.

Ladson, who had worked on Dawn Zimmer's City Council campaign, had accused McCann of harassment; the two men were in court for a hearing on that charge yesterday morning. Threats and accusations flew between the two men from the time they left the courtroom until they were outside on the street in front of City Hall.

Ladson and McCann had been tossing insults back and forth for a few minutes when McCann shouted, "I will knock you the fudge out, you old man" -- only he didn't say fudge. The cop then told McCann to "knock it off."

Ladson and Sandra Smith, who both worked for the Zimmer campaign, accused McCann of harassment; Smith also has filed harassment charges against former City Councilman Christopher Campos, who lost to Zimmer in the election but is contesting the outcome. Another campaign worker, Vivian Watts, and Ladson have filed harassment charges against Arnold Williams.

McCann said he is working to help Campos overturn the election results because he wants "revenge" against the Hudson County Democratic Organization, which tried to challenge McCann's recent win in the Jersey City school board elections. (Zimmer is an independent, but her opponent, Campos, joined the rival Democrats For Hudson County, so the HCDO threw their support behind her.) Williams was working with McCann to fend off the HCDO challenge in the school board election, which was since withdrawn.

In yesterday's hearing, the case was referred to Jersey City Municipal Court and a court date set for Sept. 26. Hoboken's municipal prosecutor said he had to be recused from the case because he defended Campos -- who was not at the hearing -- in connection to his arrest on a drunken driving charge in New York City in January. (That case also will be heard in September.)

The harassment allegation stems from an incident in which McCann and Williams serving subpoenas in a case supporting Campos's challenge of Zimmer's election win. Campos was in the back seat of their car at the time, the complaint alleges.

According to the complaint, McCann was arguing very loudly with the campaign workers and used a racial slur. McCann said he didn't do what they're alleging, and anyway says what they're describing doesn't amount to harrasment. Attorney Alex Booth, who is representing Campos, said there's no evidence supporting the charges.

HOBOKEN - Things got ugly outside Municipal Court yesterday morning when former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann, who is accused of harassment, got into a yelling match with his accuser.

Frank Ladson Jr., who had worked on Dawn Zimmer's City Council campaign this spring, has accused McCann of uttering a racial slur during an argument early this month. Yesterday, accusations, insults and threats flew back and forth until a cop nearby broke up the argument up in front of City Hall.

Sandra Smith, who also worked for the Zimmer campaign, also has filed harassment charges against McCann and former City Councilman Christopher Campos, who lost to Zimmer in the election but is contesting the outcome.

Another campaign worker, Vivian Watts, and Ladson have filed harassment charges against Arnold Williams, wqho has worked for McCann as a private investigator.

McCann said he is working with Campos to overturn Zimmer's victory because he wants "revenge" against the Hudson County Democratic Organization, which tried to challenge McCann's Jersey City school board election win.
