So where exactly is Bergen Lafayette? What's the difference between that and Greenville.

I just refer to everything South of Communipaw as Greenville, is that incorrect?

Robin.

Jersey City man must serve 17 years in prison for firing fatal shot into crowd

Friday, June 04, 2010
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey City felon who opened fire into a crowd at a notorious drug dealing corner was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison for killing a man who had himself served almost a decade in prison for homicide, officials said.

"It was a long wait for the victim's family members, who spoke very emotionally at sentencing," said county Assistant Prosecutor Kelly Simpson after the sentencing of Raheem Forrester, 31, of Grant Avenue, yesterday afternoon. "They are hoping to find closure and peace at this point."

In March 2009, Forrester pleaded guilty to the aggravated manslaughter of Antoine Mack, 33, of Bramhall Avenue, at about 5 p.m. on Nov. 6, 2007, at Bergen and Lexington avenues.

Mack was struck in the arm and the bullet went through his neck, severing major arteries, Simpson said.

Forrester pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in connection with a second victim, who was shot in the upper leg, and would have been a key witness against Forrester had the case gone to trial, Simpson said.

Forrester's prosecution took so long in part because he attempted to take back his guilty plea, Simpson said, adding that he was originally charged with murder.

On June 26, 1996, Mack was sentenced to 20 years for the aggravated manslaughter of Jensen Spencer, 27, of Duncan Avenue in Jersey City, and he served just under half of the sentence before being paroled, authorities said. Spencer was under indictment on firearms charges at the time he was killed, officials said.

Mack was in prison from June 26, 1996 to Jan. 25, 2005 and again from June 5, 2006 to June 16, 2006 on convictions for manslaughter and for drug possession, state corrections officials said.

I remember reading police used to spend quite a bit of time over there (Bergen/Lexington) about a year back. There was an incident and residents came out against police activity in the area. Bad guys were supported by residents and local councilwoman and the cops were without support from administration. Cops were raked over the coals for doing their jobs. If cops are there, there is bound to be conflict with drug dealers and if they are not there is bound to be mayhem. Cant have their cake and eat it too.

I wish that they could just arrest all the known members of the Lex Mob street gang under terrorist laws. They seem like the main problem in the Bergen Lafayette area and are holding that poor neighborhood hostage.

Haven't the JC Police Deparment heard of compustat? It was a program set up by the late Jack Maple that was used in NYC during the Bratton years. It is a simple system that merely entails placing additional officers in crime "hot spots" It appears that Lex and Bergen is one of those spots.

Why don't they just set up a mobile command at that spot considering two people have been killed over there?

All they have to do is re-position one of the numerous patrols they run through Paulus Hook each night

Drive-by murder suspect is captured

Friday, November 09, 2007
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The man wanted for murdering a Jersey City man in a drive-by shooting was captured yesterday at a South Kearny truck stop by members of the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Fugitive Task Force.

"We are gratified that the U.S. Marshals Task Force was able to make this timely apprehension," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio of the arrest of Raheem Forrester, 30, of Grant Avenue in Jersey City.

Forrester is charged with being the gunman in the shooting that took the life of Antoine Mack, 33, of Bramhall Avenue, at about 5 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Bergen and Lexington avenues, DeFazio said.

Mack was shot twice, including once in the neck, and was pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center less than two hours later, DeFazio said.

A second man, who was likely trying to run away at the time, was shot in the buttocks and is expected to recover fully.

Forrester is expected to make his first appearance on the charges of murder and aggravated assault in Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City tomorrow morning. His bail has been set by Superior Court Judge Fred Theemling at $350,000 cash only, DeFazio said.

The prosecutor said witnesses to the shooting identified Forrester as the gunman and that Forrester and Mack had had an ongoing dispute.

Early last month, Javon Williams, 19, of Bramhall Avenue, was fatally shot at Oxford and Bergen avenues following an argument that started at Bergen and Lexington, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

The intersection has been notorious for drug trafficking for years, with the Lex Mob, named for the intersection, playing a lead role.

It wasn't clear why Forrester was at the truck stop. Forrester was captured yesterday afternoon and was processed by the Hudson County Sheriff's Office and transported to the Hudson County jail in Kearny.

1 dead, 1 hurt in Bergen-Lex drive-by

Wednesday, November 07, 2007
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A man was shot to death in Jersey City last night and another was wounded in a drive-by shooting at an intersection known to be an area of drug trafficking, officials said.

Just after 5 p.m. yesterday, someone shooting from a car struck one man in the face - he died about three hours at the Jersey City Medical Center - and another in the leg at the corner of Bergen and Lexington avenues, Jersey City Police Lt. Edgar Martinez said.

No arrest had been made as of press time last night.

Early last month, Javon Williams, 19, of Bramhall Avenue, was fatally shot at Oxford and Bergen avenues following an argument that started at Bergen and Lexington, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio noted last night.

The intersection has been notorious for drug trafficking for years, with the Lex Mob, named for the intersection, playing the lead role.

In 2005, 26 members of the gang pleaded guilty to various federal charges in a prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office that used racketeering laws to crack down on the drug dealers.

It wasn't long after those prosecutions that Lex Mob influence in the area began to be seen once more.

"It's a known distribution point," DeFazio said of the intersection. "Anytime you see things like this, there could be a correlation," the prosecutor said, regarding Williams' murder and last night's shooting.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Jersey City Police Department tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
