Does that mean instead of two there will be four JC cops standing around every construction site talking on their cell phones?

Don't get me wrong, I have great respect for those who serve WITH honor and take the job seriously. I just find it ironic that alot were the punks in high school.

Veterans cops will retire at the end of the year, these 16 cops might just replace the number retiring.

I think you would be an excellent cop. You are smart, honest and compassionate to man and beast. I think you could handle the crusty veterans very well. I wish you luck.
We agree with Vigilante! Maybe you could end up in the JCPD K9 unit, but whatever you do you'll be great!

Great, now we can have enough cops to stand around at all the construction sites protecting nothing but their overtime.

Putting new cops on the street will not deter crime as long as Hudson County judges keep giving probation to criminals

I think he meant to say "asks so much of its officers." Meaning, I guess, that JC isn't exactly a war zone, but it's a close second - thanks, Mayor.

All the best to this new group. May they prosper. There will be no dent in the job that needs to be done unless and until the new police officers come to know the neighborhoods they patrol by walking and not riding with the windows rolled up. In urban America the concept of community policing goes back to the days of the town crier who walked the streets and shouted out the condition of the hour. There are very few p.o.'s who now walk the streets and overall the number is dramatically down from the last decade. All the hype about Jersey City surpassing Newark's pop count is worthless without the resources to address the demand. These young police officers will soon exit this city for another place to call home and raise a family as time has shown.

Not quite sure where you live but over by me we have beat walkers, also they have stationed cops in those little carts at the intersections where all the dealers are at.

Sixteen - we need a lot more than 16, how about another 200. Let's have a war against crime in Jersey City and show the criminal element we are serious.
Almost every day there are articles of someone being shot or violent crimes being committed.
When does this become unacceptable?
Some of the 16 will be just replacing those who will be retiring.
Jersey City can be a great city if we can handle the crime issue. Our police work hard. I few family members were police officers and are now retired. Many of the officers I currently know, along with my family members have mentioned in conversations we do need many more Police Officers in Jersey City. we have no Police walking the beats or in neighborhoods. What happened to community policing we were promised?
Yes I understand it cost a a great deal of money, however it is up to our elected officials to provide and be accountable for the safety the people of Jersey City.
When you see the things our City Council votes and spends/wastes money on the only thing I can think of is their incompetence when it comes to their decisions, meanwhile something the City Council and the Mayor should seriously address is the crime issue.

16 new police officers on Jersey City's streets

Thursday, December 17, 2009

Sixteen new Jersey City police officers are patrolling the city streets after being sworn in Friday at a ceremony in the Margaret Williams Theatre at New Jersey City University.

"The officers receiving badges on this joyous occasion are naturally awed by the significance of their oaths and the responsibility that awaits them," said Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy. "No other profession, except the military, asks so much of its police officers."

The new officers sworn in are Richard Gallardo, Christopher Viera, Jason Perez, Michael Galano, Megan Bara, Danny Cruz, Trident Villanueva, John Costanzo, Gabriel Moreano, Marvin Leggitts, Crisant Bereguette, Michael Strothers, Macie J. Kuzmicki, Jerry Ngo, Jarely Rodriguez and Gicella Sanchez.

The rookie cops are all graduates of the Jersey City Police Academy.

"The new officers are already out there protecting residents for the holiday season," Police Director Sam Jefferson said yesterday.
