You can also "Support" someone else's suggestion - lots of the NYC locations have many supporters already, so if you really want to see a JC location, go in and "Support" these locations.

Why is the city subsidizing house purchases for the people who can't afford to buy a house? Isn't this exactly what led to the mortgage crisis in the first place?

Super Impact Fitness in McGinley Square

Just saw this new fitness studio, it's in the first-floor commercial space of m650 Flats (650 Montgomery, across from the Beacon). Does anyone know anything about them? Looks like they've been running Fitness Boot Camps in LSP before opening their storefront, anyone ever been?

http://www.superimpactfitness.com/

Hopefully the neighborhood can support this. Maybe they're hoping to lure Beacon residents away from the Beacon's gym?

Good point about the Armory, it gets very little attention, but it's an amazing building with the potential to be a cornerstone of the neighborhood.

to learn more about the potential of the Armory, read about the Armory Track and Field Center at the 168th St. Armory in NYC - http://ny.milesplit.com/pages/about-us

Does anyone know if a Chlorine leak happened, would going to the top of a tall building help? I am familiar with the principals of fluid dynamics, all the variables to account for like wind, topography, etc...but in general is the gas heavy enough that it could make a difference?

According to the MSDS for chlorine, the vapor density is about 2.5x that of air, so it'll definitely settle to the ground in the absence of wind. But if you're a mile away from the release point, then any gas that reaches you is probably windborne anyway.

Icechute recently posted this JJ link on another thread.

Despite all the pretty drawings and Metrovest plans, it sounds like they're going back to the beginning with the Montgomery Gardens project, and nothing will be happening for a long time (the HUD grant provides for a 2-year study). Does anyone know if this means the original project is dead? Or is the Senior Center at Florence and Montgomery still slated to begin in the summer?

It all comes down to enforcement of traffic laws (or lack thereof). All drivers know the rules, or did at one point, when they got their licenses, but they also know they'll never get a ticket for anything, no matter how flagrant, on the streets of downtown JC.

This is a real peeve of mine, cities keep cutting police forces to save money, and the few remaining cops have better things to do than enforce traffic laws. But it would be a huge source of revenue, which could pay for more cops doing even more important duty.

I have a Resort Map with JC on one side and Hoboken on the other. Got it a few years ago, I think from my realtor. These things are primarily used as advertisements for participating businesses, but you still might find it useful.

I found it online:

I didn't realize abatements were still being given in areas that need them, I thought they had become the exclusive purview of downtown megadevelopments. Good to see!

And the picture they're painting of an upscale coffee shop on the upper level sounds a bit grandiose for the neighborhood, but time will tell.

I consider myself pretty libertarian, and I think there are very few things the government has to do vs private industry, but large-scale infrastructure is one of those things. It's one of the reasons the government exists. We can't just leave this to the capitalists.

In this poor economy, even if a new bridge or tunnel was in demand and profitable, it'd be such a huge and potentially high-risk investment, few private companies are in a position to make such an investment right now, even if it had the potential to be lucrative.

Actually the commercial space at m650 is up for sale, not the the building.

But I'm looking forward to see what the Bruncon guys do with that firehouse, it's sure to be impressive.

My understanding is that when Conrail was selling the land, they received no bids from the city, only one bid from Hyman. JC only made its offer after Hyman had purchased the land.

This one's a cheap and easy improvement: More (or clearer) signage for which trains are on which tracks!

There are some stations where there are no signs telling you which track to wait at, or the signs are all upstairs, so that if you get off one train, you have no idea where you're supposed to be for the next one.

I'm a BSB trivia regular, but I went to York St Trivia on Monday, for the first time. Definitely different, it's run by Trivia Tryst (www.triviatryst.com ) so it's very structured with lots of different rounds and bonus questions, etc. But lots of questions in a pretty fun format, and pretty good food/drink specials.

I think if more attention (learning) was paid to the printed schedules they would be understood. It is every 15 minutes from the departure time of your station till the next schedule of departures in the row below. For example if the departure time is 7:10 leaving every 10 minutes till 8:35 then it is 7:10, 7:20, 7:30, 7:40, 7:50, 8:00 and so forth till 8:30 being the last of the 10 minute departures then the next train is 8:35 and what ever minutes in between till the next new scheduled departure time. If it is every 20 minutes then it would be 8:35, 8:55, 9:15...... in you station column.

Yes, Heights, that's what you need to do. It's not difficult, but it takes time and is easy to screw up. But it's far easier to go to Google Maps, and click on the station, and see the list of upcoming departures. It takes 2 seconds that way and doesn't require you to mentally step off times. Why can't the PATH website do that?!

If memory serves, the tickers say "next SCHEDULED train..."
While it would be nice if they were kept updated with real-time information, such as with the L-trains in NY, it is still useful to know what the next scheduled train is (especially since the published timetables are nearly impossible to use with their "every 15 minutes until..." BS). So I don't agree that it's USELESS. Basically you're complaining about the train being 5 minutes late. With the PATH, that ain't so bad.

So we're still a year away from the first demolition of one building and 3 years away from anything finished, and they still have no firm timing for the rest of the buildings? Very disappointing.

Should we start a pool as to how many people will be killed there in the meantime? Maybe an over/under of 5?

Re: Barrow Street Bar Trivia Night

I've been going to Barrow's trivia night, we switched to O'Connell's for a few weeks, it's a very different style and fun in its own right but we switched back to BSB. There are a lot more questions at O'Connell's, but they're usually very easy (there will be over 50 questions, but most teams will get >45 right). The host at O'Connell's is a great guy and fun.

At O'Connell's there were usually only 3 or 4 teams, and the prizes were weak and inconsistent (one week we won $25 cash, one week we won and all they gave us was a cheap bottle of wine). At BSB the winner gets a $50 gift certificate.

And regarding the cheaters with their iPhones etc, the girl who runs the BSB night is pretty on-the-ball and has no tolerance for cheaters. It doesn't appear to be much of a problem in my opinion, but I'm sure it does go on.
