Put it in your front yard it will be gone in 10 minutes.

And put a piece of paper with "FREE" on it.

Or, you can try:
- there's a facebook group called SwapJC
- post on Craigslist

I've done both with free stuff in the past, and people really, really love FREE stuff!

Interesting... Is it because they can see the popping of the bubble coming soon?

Do you know what kind of prices they're asking?

How much would the renovation have cost to bring 9 Astor place to its current state? Just a rough figure?

Not sure how it could've sold since closing takes a couple of weeks. I do know there was an offer being placed for 560k right after the open house. It could've fell through but even if it did go for 475 is almost double what the owner paid for.

That's so true!!! It was where Short Grain is now!!! I was just thinking to myself several days ago that the spot (the Short Grain store front) was like a rotating wheel, no shop has ever stayed long enough, but I couldn't remember what was there before the real estate shop. Now I remember!

Just for my future reference, are the following reasonable to ask for if a developer ever asks to buy my unit/building?

If only half of your apartment went out during a legitimate outage, you should really have an electrician by some time to see why all of your circuits aren't connected to one central breaker. It could literally save your life some day.

That's what my and my husband were discussing during the outage. Is it normal to have an apartment/building (our neighbors have the same issue) wired from two different outside lines/grids?

Just to be clear - it appears that the half of the apartment that lost power wasn't completely out - when we turn on the light switch, we could see that the light is on, just very dim (barely can see the light). So, it would *appear* that half the circuit has full power (everything working as normal), while the other half has very weak power (enough to have dim lights, but not enough to power a TV, for example).

BTW, power is back! and AC is back! Yay!

There are quite a few buildings on my block with no lights at all (except the front door light). So weird!!!

And my downstairs neighbor has the same problem. Could be our building specific - but I think there are too many dark buildings on the block...

Why do you think it's scary? Scary for some, payday for others, I guess. Do you think the 1BR in Paulus Hook will sell or is that an unrealistic price?

I think the "rate of increase" is scary - $200k in 6 years, that's $33K per year increase, whereas salaries remain (almost) flat within the same time frame.

And it doesn't matter what I think - I won't be surprised if someone brought it already.

for the Sunday deliveries, they often just lie on the USPS tracking system. they have promised Amazon two-day delivery, but they're often not capable of doing that for whatever reason, so they mark in the system that they attempted delivery on Sunday (even though they haven't) and then they actually deliver it on Monday.

I've had this experience at least half a dozen times, it's annoying and confusing, but the packages aren't lost, at least in my experience.

You're right!!! I got my package today!!! EIGHT days after it was suppose to be delivered.

Re: Beware! Amazon's new delivery service leaves packages

Also beware of the USPS's sunday deliveries. I have two packages lost from amazon in the last 1.5 months (one from mid april, and one at end of May). Both were marked "delivered" in tracking, both were supposed to be "delivered" on sunday. But of course, no trace of them found when I get home. Something is very wrong when one of the tracking status has details that says "package left with receptionist or front desk person." Well, I live in small brownstone building, and we have no front desk or receptionist.

I went to the USPS office on wednesday, and the very nice manager told me that on sundays, they have a rotating staff of delivery men from other locations (such as bergen, etc) to help out (so the local folks can take a day off), and they have had a lot of issues recently (I'm shocked that they noticed!). However, the only thing they could do was report to the Post master - I guess that means the USPS black hole (just like the PATH black hole).

Recipients beware!!!

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

Well, without looking at the story, I have to assume it is because these two individuals are really talented, have real leadership skills, and knows how to do a turn around of failed companies.

In addition,I bet these two individuals have shown a track record of being thrown into a tough & completed f*cked up situation and/or companies, and still be able to quickly realize the issues at hand, identify proper solutions and execute necessary changes that will bring improvements to everyone affected by such failed companies.

With the right underlying capabilities, people can pick up industry-specific experiences while they're on the job and still perform and/or outperform someone from inside the industry.

For example, while I do not know these two candidates, I bet if they were to throw Elon Musk on the job (even though he has no direct transit experience), he will be able to transform PATH to nothing that we know of it today.

I can't imagine our elected officials would choose anyone for the job without meeting, or even considering, the simple requirements stated above.

I think it's so unfair to blame everything on "illegal immigrants".

For those who "truly" believe in this government propaganda, they should really wake up and smell the roses - there are a lot more issues that all contribute to our society as the way it is. One cannot point at one and said "that's it".

How accessible is Astor Place? I mean, how easy is it to get to the PATH or the light rail? I looked at google maps, and both seems a bit far? Do you definitely need a car to live around there?

A place is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. The property 2 doors down sold for $550 just a few months ago, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. That being said, I live on Astor Pl and we've received two letters in the past two weeks (one from a house hunter and one from a realtor) saying they are looking for a property (restored or not) on Astor Place. So apparently there is demand.

It's asking $569k - is that "fair" or "expensive" for this area (given that it's renovated and all that)?

Also, it's only 13-wide? That's pretty narrow, no?

Re: JC Post Office - Be Very Afraid

I've had two packages missing in the last 2 months, both were supposed to be delivered on sunday (according to tracking). The 1st lost package even has a comment that says "package was handed off to receptionist or someone at front desk". Well, I live in a small brownstone, and we don't have anyone at the "front".

Just want to see if anyone else are having lost packages with sunday deliveries as well?

I plan on making a trip to the post office tomorrow, but I'm not hopeful. Actually, I have zero hope. But I think this is the tipping point for me that I want to do something about it - but the sad part seems that there's not even much I can do?

Re: Priced Out of Brooklyn? Try Manhattan

I agree - I grew up in Queens, and "the City" means Manhattan. Brooklyn/Queens/StatenIsland/Bronx =/= "the city".

There's only one "the city", and that's Manhattan. The other boroughs can dream/whine/pretend as much as they want, but they're not part of "The City". They're part of "NYC".

Hence: "NYC" =/= "The City".

I don't get it - what was the trick that Brooklyn used to catapult itself to the top of the "hip and hot" list? I've been to DUMBO, park slope and other areas many times; yes, they are nice, but not worth Manhattan+ prices.

Perhaps JC can use the same trick / formula???

Re: Condo Association falling apart? What to do?

I'd be interesting in any info in this matter too. We are a small building (5 units), but it's mostly just 1-2 units/owners trying to get things done. And we've only had one partial owners meeting in 3 years (and no minutes was recorded/distributed).

The part that aggregates me the most is that those absentee landlord/lazy onsite owners won't even bother to reply to emails and put in a vote to greenlight projects and expenses - all the work is already done (the 2 active owners get all the quotes / compare quotes / scheduling /etc).

Re: Two dogs were stolen and sold in Jersey City, owner says

I guess if one is exposed to such things at a very young age, then it would be "normal".

My dad loves turtle - he'd buy live turtles from the market, and I remember vividly he'd "prep" it himself for cooking; for example. standing there in the kitchen (sometimes for a few minutes) with a cleaver waiting for the turtle's head to come out (of the shell) so he can chop it off in one big swoof!

And my parents would force me to eat a stewed chicken heart - because that's suppose to be good for me...
