The city has its own rules that bike racks can't interfere with the sidewalk (you need 5 feet of passage) and they are on many narrow sidewalks. I didn't measure but they look like the passage way will be very narrow. Are they not subject to their own rules? (I know the answer....)

NYC had the wisdom to widen many sidewalks to fit the bike racks by widening the sidewalks into (no parking) striped spaces on the street near corners. JC couldn't do this?!?! Come on.
I can understand the concern about sidewalks. perhaps the city should place more of the bikes in the streets - near the corner like they do in the great big apple

No, the $2 billion will not be reinvested in PATH If the EWR extension is killed. Let's take the extension and then gun for capacity improvements so the PA will have fast, reliable service between Manhattan and Newark Airport.

The AirTrain people move has reached the end of its useful life. This is an excellent opportunity to improve the link between PATH and the new AirTrain.
they need to d something about getting to ewr (as well as lga and jfk). I say keep the extension or have the Newark subway extended right to the airport so that

I for one disagree. It's a little further out, but still accessible via PATH. People who can't afford downtown JC will likly now look at JSQ and Harrison.

In two years once the tens of thousands of new units are up in JSQ and DTJC, moving to Harrison comes with the added bonus of being able to get on the PATH train. Because these trains will be packed to the gills before they leave JSQ.
lol. people don't understand sh_t. I don't think dtjc ha anything to fear from jsq or Harrison (I wish these areas the best). if I don't want to deal with crowded path, I can just hop on the ferry or leave earlier and dtjc is developing its own scene, which is an added bonus!

Leaving earlier is not a viable solution for everyone. And, even if it was, the return would still be a major pain. I have been noticing ever more crowding in the afternoons, and early evenings. The problem with the ferries is that it is very costly (three times the cost of a PATH ride!) and it runs limited hours. For people who need to be at work late, or whose day starts late, the ferry is simply not a good option.

As for DTJC developing "its own scene"... who cares? Despite what others would rather believe, most of the newcomers are flocking here because of proximity to Manhattan and other parts of NYC. Easy transportation to NYC is key to the long term prospects of JC.
it's a shame some people are so narrow minded. some people like a scene, some don't. some people will want to live in a place that has a scene, a vibe.

Sigh. You are missing the point. Or, you are seriously deluded. People are not flocking to JC because of its "scene". Whatever scene we have is just an added bonus. I love JC and the many things happening in town. Good restaurants, plenty of places where to grab a beer, the various farmer markets, etc. In general, I rarely go into Manhattan on weekends and instead choose to stay local. But, I didn't come to JC because of any of that. I made a decision to come here because I could pay a nice rent on a nice place that puts me at work in very little time. The local stuff was just a cherry on top.
first, I said some people and second restaurants and other stuff constitute a scene....and yes, there are people who choose to live where there are restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. perhaps you or your acquaintances would not, but that does not make my point invalid

The thought that I had while walking away is that somebody in the very near future ought to open some type of beer garden in the heights (not sure how it would jive with the residential neighborhood but the demand seems like it would be there).

I have noticed changes in area around my house (pretty much 1 mile due west of the lumberyard event with more proximity to JSQ) but it is the Indian population that seems to have increased the most. It is hard to say what impact this has on local business/neighborhood but I can't help but notice there are several more vacant bodegas recently. Could this be because spendthrift Indian population generally buy most of their groceries etc around Newark ave rather then at local bodegas?

Problems which the GATEWAY plan could solve - thus the urgency in getting both governors off their respective soapboxes and into the hard work of raising political and financial support for this project! Sure, it will be expensive but it will be 21st century solution providing maximum inter-connectivity for the metro area, vs. a 19th century solution (the ARC plan) providing yet another terminal.
i tend to agree that nj nees to be better integrated into nyc transit system but nj transit would probably not allow that. in the end the lack of tunnel capacity hurts nj much more than ny

No, the answer isn't just keep raising taxes. We are already taxed to the brink.

The answer is go into the tremendously bloated government and start cutting out waste. We have over 500 municipalities, most of which have their own local government, along with the fundamentally useless county government. Start hacking into that and use the savings for better purposes.

The 55th annual Puerto Rican Day Festival and Parade are set to commence this weekend, with attractions for people of all ages looking to show their Boricua pride.

The festival will take place at Exchange Place in Jersey City on Saturday and end the following day at 9 p.m.

The parade, which will set out from the Lincoln monument at Belmont Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard at noon on Sunday, will travel north on Kennedy to Montgomery Street, before heading east on Montgomery and concluding at City Hall.

Floats, singers, salsa music, vendors, food and Puerto Rican dances, called "plenas," will provide family-friendly fun and enjoyment at both weekend events.

Councilman-at-Large Daniel Rivera will serve as this year's grand marshal, while the honorary grand marshal is Luis "Mosquito" Gonzales, who is honored for his past service as president of the Puerto Rican Day Festival and Parade organizing committee, as well as his service to the community.

Downtown Jersey City tower getting 30-year tax break

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal
August 14, 2015 at  8:02 AM

The City Council next week is expected to give initial approval to a 30-year tax break for a 17-story residential tower KRE Group is building near Hamilton Park.

The developer, who received a $40 million tax break from the state last month, has pledged to make 20 percent of the tower's 397 units affordable. Mayor Steve Fulop, who for years as a councilman criticized long-term tax breaks for Downtown developments, has said he now supports them if developers build affordable units on-site.

Instead of conventional taxes, KRE would pay a service charge, which in the first year is estimated to be $1.1 million. Conventional taxes would be $2.1 million. KRE could save as much as $41 million over the course of the deal.
