Re: Historical Information - Where To Find
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm sure this will be covered in the session at the library, but if you go to the tax office in City Hall with your block and lot number (it's on your tax bill), they'll let you see and photocopy anything in your folder, which will usually include a tax photo from the late 1930s. If you need a higher quality reproduction, bring a notebook computer and scanner. My understanding is that most of the old blueprints were lost in the fire at City Hall long ago that destroyed the domes that used to top the corners of the building.

I suspect it's simply that exterior maintainance on both buildings was ignored for decades. I assume JC doesn't have similar laws to NYC that requires all brick buildings of a certain minimum size to be scaffolded/inspected/re-pointed every 10 years?

Quote:

Design-wise, there is one disappearing difference between 2600 and the hospital.

Until repairs on 2600 began, it had a decorative stone railing along the tops of the roofs. That now has been pretty much chopped down to level, leaving a jaggedy roofline at points where the ex-railing became plain wall.

The difference here is that the Medical Center / Beacon has to follow national historic guidelines given the restoration tax breaks they are taking. 2600 is unfotunately not required to stick to these guidelines as far as I understand. The neighborhood is not a historic district, so owners can generally do as they wish regarding exterior work. Joe, do you recall that building a couple blocks towards JSQ on Kennedy which used to have the unusual column details on the roof, and it was all torn off a few years back? What a shame.

My 2 cents: the jaywalkers on these 4 lane roads (JFK, Montgomery, etc) are a WAY bigger problem than the speeders. I've seen speeding tickets being given out, but never a jaywalking ticket. Worst offenders: the people who run across against the right-of-way pushing a baby carriage and dragging a toddler.

Re: Day Care - Downtown

Home away from home

Growing Tree told us they'd consider part time if we found someone else to take the other days. I'd think you'd have more luck with this if you were doing a 2/3 day split, not 1/4.

We were previously at Baby Galileo, but left before moving to the toddler area, which we were not so impressed by. I still think it's a fine place for pre-walking babies.

In our experience, River School wait list was 19 months, if I'm recalling correctly. I think they also told us a year initially. Keep in mind that part time is more expensive when you divide it by day. I think this is true anywhere, but it was maybe 5-10% extra at Baby Galileo, but more like 25-30% at River School.

I'm looking for part time day care (1 or 2 days a week) for my 1 year old twins and I can't seem to find anywhere to take them. The River School will do 2 days , but as you know has a 1 year wait list. I'm waiting for Baby Galileo to call me back, Growing Trees don't do part time... anyone got any advice, suggestions. fyi I want part time as we are getting a nanny, but want to give her a break for a day or 2 a week, plus the kids love to socialize with other children and enjoy the occassional day that I put them in daycare.

Please help....

I've only heard real estate agents call this the Hague. Most just call it 2600 Kennedy. Originally it was known as the Duncan Apartments, since it's on the corner of Duncan Ave. Note the name in this ad from 1927:

If we're only speaking of infant care, this is something of a moot point, as the River School waiting list exceeds a year and a half. You'd have to apply a good 3-6 months BEFORE conception to get in a 6 month old. I imagine the few little babies there I've seen are younger siblings of other enrolled children.

Yeah, typo on my part. But I still stand by my statement. The title makes it sound like there were 3 murders in my neighborhood, which is not the case.

The title of this thread is misleading. Most of these crimes were not in the Lincoln Park / West Bergen neighborhood. Only Harrison & West Side would qualify.

I agree it's a nightmare to drive down that stretch of Newark during popular hours, but I've always (as in many dozens of times) found parking within a couple blocks. Try further up Newark (like near Casa Dante) or any of the side streets off Newark.

The Jersey City Diner

Home away from home

This is the new name for the newly renovated former Colonette Diner on Route 440, in front of the Pathmark and K-Mart. The 50s inspired chrome exterior looks a bit too fake, but I suppose it's an improvement. Has anyone eaten there since the renovation and name change? I always considered this one of the better diners in JC, although Al's on Communipaw has been our top choice the last few years.

This is the obvious and surely correct answer. How am I supposed to get in my driveway if you're parked up to your front wheels? I'm amazed at the people on my street who will park a foot or more into a driveway and then be surprised when they are ticketed.

2.5 hours to be seen for a low priority condition like a hurt leg is not bad at all. I take it you haven't been to many ERs?

What was worse was that they wouldn't let me leave to grab food or something, or else I'd lose my spot in line. Among the people there was a small child who threw up in the waiting room, even after this happened, the family had to wait a good half hour or so before they were seen.

But maybe it was just a bad night to be hurt/sick...

I hitchhiked out of the city through the Holland Tunnel when NYC had the big blackout a few summers back. I made sure to ask the cops on the NYC side of the tunnel first if it was ok, because under different circumstances I think I would have been arrested trying to get a ride there. I got dropped off where 139 breaks off from 1&9 and walked a couple miles home. It turned out to be way faster than my plan B which was to catch the ferry.

The Lincoln Park bashers strike again! Please search this site for Lincoln Park for more threads on the topic with alternate opinions, my own included.

I will say here that Harrison is nicer between JFK and Bergen then the block you're looking at. The West Side block is preferable if you're on Bentley or Belmont. For the other steets, it's usually best to be on the other side of JFK.

That's the other side of Communipaw which I'd consider a whole different neighborhood. Although I have friends on Union Steet (2 blocks further towards Greenville) and their block is fine.

Re: A Letter to Mayor Healy (Jersey Journal)

I dunno -- this letter is pretty ridiculous: "If they didn't find anything in the car, maybe next they will break into our home, rape me, murder my husband and steal my car." Give me a break. Guess what, I drive through Lincoln Park all the time, and have never gotten a ticket. But I also respect the speed limit (25 mph, which makes perfect sense for a park). And no commercial vehicles are allowed. Speed through the park in your limo, and you deserve a ticket, 'nuff said.

If this is the case, I'm strongly in favor of this policy. My understanding is that the city usually forces developers to include parking in their larger projects, in order to keep cars off the street. But people don't like paying for parking, so they just get a permit, park on the street, and then the building's lot or garage is not being fully used because of it. Not allowing these residents to have permits solves that problem. I suspect I will get flamed for saying this, but I think we all need to get out of the mindset of free parking. The fact that I can drive into NYC, where space is at such a premium, and find free parking in many parts of the city is pretty ridiculous. I suspect this will change in the next 10 years.

Does anyone else find the letter from the mayor that comes with the tax bill to be completely embarrassing every time? There was an obvious typo in this one ("Western Watefront", and shouldn't it be all lower-case "western waterfront", or is this a new neighborhood designation I don't know about?) And the bragging that city taxes have not gone up, when simply no budget has been approved so they're just going with the status quo.

You can help protect yourself with a high-end lock like Medeco which has keys that can't be copied without presenting a special card to the locksmith that only you have. This will keep a sketchy employee of a cleaning service from "borrowing" your key and copying it. The only problem is these things are expensive -- the deadbolts are around $200 and key copies can be $25. I think it's worth it.

Re: This City Needs an Indie Movie Theater

Home away from home

Let's face it: an indie movie theatre would crash and burn in this town. I'd like it as much as the next person, but it would be shuttered within 6 months. There's just not a big enough audience here. The Loews shows great stuff (mostly not child oriented -- I'm not sure what the other poster was talking about) and if it was in NYC, they'd sell out every screening, but there's rarely more than a couple hundred people at any screening from my estimates (with the notable exception of the very excellent Frankenstein weekend a few years back.)

Joe, you recently wrote an article for some local magazine where you quoted Barbara as saying she's so busy with the church in Newark that she's not taking any other jobs on. This is admitably a bit of an exaggeration as she just did a window for me and I know she's squeezing in some residental restoration projects here and there. But I don't think there's any scenario where she would have bid for the City Hall job. Of course in an alternate universe, she would have done an excellent job and come in cheaper than anyone else.

Re: Signs Signs, everywhere there's Signs
Home away from home
Home away from home

Full disclosure: I'm friends with one of the people involved with this organization.

They did consult the local residents. I believe they reached out to every neighborhood association. I definitely attended one for Lincoln Park / McGinley Square where they gave a presentation and took comments.

It seems the big problem is that the first round of signs were placed too close to the street and lots of them got knocked off the poles by trucks. Apparently the city officially took over maintainance of the signs, and then more-or-less has refused to fix them because they were pissed off that it took a non-government group to pull off the project. So I guess for this 2nd round of signs they went way too far in the other direction, and placed them too far away from the street. There's one on Bergen near McGinley Square which is right in the middle of the sidewalk, and I'm sure many people have walked right into it.

I think the signs are a good project, but they need to be repositioned and maintained. I think the Princeton architect was picked because they did these kinds of signs in Newark, which were very successful. I know they've helped me a lot the many times I've gotten lost in Newark (like every time I take Rt. 280).

I can't get myself behind the website part of it.

So...this non-profit org got a $3.6million NJDOT grant, spent it on 500 signs and an website (works out about $7,200/sign), and they supposedly consulted the local residents? And the City Hall has a $1.5 million makeover in the same week that according to the City Clerk gives us "...a first class space to conduct public business"?

Somehow I can't get over the image of pigs feeding.

Daycare: River School vs. Baby Galileo
Home away from home
Home away from home

After 19 months River School has finally called to say my son is off the waitlist. We have just a few days to decide if we want to move him from Baby Galileo. We're generally fine with where he is now, but do want him to be in the best possible setting. The decision is complicated by the fact that the River School is significantly more expensive. I'm specifically looking for comments from anyone who has moved their kid from Baby Galileo to the River School, but any firsthand comments about River School are welcome. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd rather not comment in public.
