The streaming/instant options with Netflix are pretty crap honestly. For both movies and TV. No HBO that I'm aware of (I think I've looked for Boardwalk Empire and The Wire and they had neither).

Thanks dtjcview for the suggestion about hard wiring the receiver. Been wondering about that. The netflix issues are not always related to bandwidth as we've used speedtest to check on that.

We got a roku only to find out that our tv doesn't have enough inputs for us to wire sound for the roku and cable at the same time. It's not a super old tv, maybe a 4 year old flatscreen. THinking of just ditching cable and using the roku. Except that Walking Dead comes back on this weekend and that is one of the last currently airing cable shows I care about. I wish AMC had an option like HBO Go.

What does everyone here use to stream tv shows and movies? Do you have any issues with streaming services? I've tried both Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime Instant, and Netflix often has server issues causing lags in the stream. Amazon Prime seems to crash a lot and the interface I access via my dvd player is really crappy, but the streaming of shows themselves is consistent. I haven't tried hulu.

You said they're visiting in a few months, so at least spring. For JC during the day I would also recommend renting bikes either from Grove Bicycle or at LSP itself. THe bike ride along the waterfront (from LSP all the way to Hoboken) is a very nice ride with great views, and during the day is one of the safest/lowest traffic times to ride. I also think lunchtime is the best time to visit the Hoboken waterfront.

Re: Another Catholic school in Jersey City to close doors in June

I graduated from a Catholic high school. In my opinion, the myopic insistence on "tradition" is part of what does these schools in. The number of practicing Catholics is shrinking and Catholic families are also smaller than they used to be. To keep the schools alive you have to broaden your reach to other families - non practicing, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc. and appeal to them on the grounds of solid academics, small class size, and a safer school environment. Otherwise the appeal of these schools will be very limited.

If all of this is true it sounds like she is the type of grifter whose M.O. is a combination of mental illness and desire for financial gain. Sometimes the manipulation of others is as big a payoff as the money.

I agree that Park and Sixth can only deal with this to the extent that it's an HR issue for them. If the whole thing is some weird hoax it would not be good for them to fire this girl.

Those involved, I suggest that you file a report with whatever agency is relevant (police, FBI, etc.) and encourage those who dealt with her in Brooklyn to do so too (who knows, if it's a multi-state thing maybe that's a bigger deal and they'll care more- if anything it's more evidence).

Saigon was renovated recently and gets more light now. I don't think $12-25 for an entree is too expensive in JC. They also have a great whiskey selection.

Can you name a few? The loud fratty bars are usually that way all week long. I don't know of any dives that start charging cover on the weekends.

I think they were joking about the "every" dive bar thing but as I remember there were a few places that were regular old bars until the weekends when suddenly they'd have velvet ropes, lines and loud shitty music.

I don't know about the velvet ropes, but the Shannon, McSwiggans, and Mulligans meet the rest of that criteria. I know, because those three bars constituted the majority of my weekends a few years back.

Yeah, McSwiggans was the one I was thinking of. OF course I was being slightly hyperbolic, but really I have never seen this sort of phenomenon outside of Hoboken.

I make above the median income. I have no children. I just bought a clothing rack on Newark Ave for about half of what Bed Bath & Beyond is charging.

I am deeply sorry if that offends you.

It does not offend me. You are just preventing your neighborhood from progressing and developing, that is all.

As I said before your definition of progress isn't the same as mine. You can claim that I am preventing home values from increasing faster because the retail strip is not desirable enough to the high end set - that is fair and probably true. I like living in a diverse neighborhood, in terms of race, culture, and yes socioeconomics. I hope that would be true even if I became a millionaire or billionaire.

What's confusing is, why did Hoboken become the way it did while Park Slope and other pricey Brooklyn nabes became the way they did? Is it simply because one is in NJ and one is in the boroughs?

I think it's three things:

1. Really lax entertainment zoning. In Hoboken every single dive bar turns into a "dance club" complete with DJ, disco ball, and doorman collecting cover charge on the weekends. This is a huge part of why the live music ordinance in JC took forever to pass.

2. Desirable school distract attracting young families.

3. Easy commute into NYC.

JC is doing better on being nightlife friendly and is just as easy a commute, but the school system is still a mess so there's kind of a split going on. The families that can afford private school stay in downtown, those who can't move to the Heights or out to the suburbs.

Before we were above median income my partner and I were broke as hell for years. We survived fairly well on 1/3 of what we bring in right now (albeit in a cheaper area than this). Old habits die hard and remaining thrifty means more money to save, invest, travel with, and buy property with.

VIVA LA 99 CENT STORES!

One thing that no one considers is that even the higher income households in downtown JC were often originally motivated to move to the area in part due to affordability and thus don't necessarily look down on all the discount stores.

My household is above the median income and we still shop at the dollar stores. Stuff like holiday gift bags, basic kitchen items like dishtowels (so once they get grody after a few months there's no guilt tossing them), materials for craft projects, etc. - we go to the dollar store first.

I don't know how typical we are of the demographics who shop there. But not everyone who moves in to the neighborhood wants it to change to some luxury playground. Look at how that worked out for Manhattan under Bloomberg, or how homogeneous Hoboken has gotten. Plenty of people are moving to JC to get away from all that, not recreate it here.

Am I the only one who finds this kind of pathetic?

"You can?t help but notice all the baby strollers on Washington Street these days. Those young families need a comfortable place to have dinner. And afterwards if people want to hang around a watch a game and have a beer, we?ll do that too.?

?We want to keep the tradition of Maxwell?s but make it fit today?s Hoboken.?

What in the hell does opening a family-friendly pizza joint have to do with the 'tradition of Maxwells?' Pizza is the most oversaturated market of bland restaurant concepts imaginable. They are aiming for an entirely different demographic than the previous incarnation of Maxwell's and it's insulting to my intelligence to imply that they are respecting the Ghosts of Maxwell's past somehow.

I mean shit, just be honest. "There's more money in pizza than rock clubs because this is a fully gentrified cultural black hole. We're renaming the place Charles E. Cheese's to reflect the New Hoboken."

So live in your happy world until the courts force the revaluation and you will see million dollar homes in bankruptcy.

I rent and pay for neither of those things. The issues that may be #1, 2, or 3 in terms of affecting your quality of life might be non-issues for others. I also don't have kids so the failing schools aren't as much on my radar. I'm not saying JC is perfect just that not all of us are so disgusted with the quality of life here. Urban living in a transitional time is not for everyone.

I'm not sure what you mean about JC being "worth less on paper" now - do you mean how balanced the city budget is? I've been following the cost of downtown real estate for the last 3 years and after a long plateau prices look like they are rising, especially for the more "desirable" or marketable luxury condos.

Speak for yourself. When I left the JC area circa 2003, grove street plaza was dirty, surrounded by run down bodegas and low rent stores, and full of homeless people begging. I came back in the summer of 2010 and thought the farmer's market had to be a mirage, it was that different from what I remembered. The restaurants, art galleries, renovated parks, etc. are all recent improvements that increased my quality of life.

In other homeless person news, I am pretty sure the Gorton's fisherman of Columbus Ave got a makeover. No more long black hooded coat. He is wearing a sportier jacket and blue jeans that appear clean/new. I totally didn't recognize him until I got close enough to hear him muttering his usual expletives under his breath and then recognized the stooped posture and cart. All I can imagine is with the freezing temps he ended up in a shelter that cleaned him up and got him some new clothes. I saw him in the pizza place 2-3 days ago and he still had the long black coat so it must have been over the weekend.

He is mostly harmless but can be verbally abusive so for anyone who usually avoids him like I do, be aware his look is different.

The city is spending $600K on this with a matching investment from the private sector. Honestly 600K is not going to fix the public school system or any other large scale issue. If they were spending, say, $3M or more I'd object. But the return on investment for this could actually be pretty decent.

I guess for a recent college grad used to a dorm room, who has just landed their first "real" job and can squeak by paying this kind of rent, it sort of makes sense? Or for someone on a short term business assignment, like a 2 month contract, similar to an efficiency hotel room. Otherwise that just strikes me as a shitty quality of life for the price.

I also recommend renting in your target neighborhood before buying. That is what we are planning to do if we jump from downtown to the heights. Even though I've been to the heights dozens of times that's not the same as living there and I don't think I could buy into a neighborhood without the 24/7 knowledge of it first.

It also helps you adjust to cost of living - I don't know what Seattle is like but in Providence RI, where we moved from, groceries were a hell of a lot cheaper. Laundry was cheaper (60 cents/lb wash dry fold, how I miss you). So our day to day expenses went up moving here.

For schools, the heights seems to be a better bet for kids also. Some friends just moved there with a baby and they love being near 2 parks.

You need to attract out of state and international students to command that much for a dorm room. I went to a school in Boston where the dorms cost more than an apartment share (currently room and board is 15K a year there). Most of the students were commuters, probably another 20-30% rented apartments, and the ones who lived in dorms were usually clueless about local real estate and the better deals they could get off campus. I think I paid something like 850/month to share an apartment, and spent maybe $150 a month on groceries, as opposed to $1250 a month to live in a dorm where I was essentially going to be babysat by my college and be kicked out over winter and summer break.

Dorms are usually a ripoff unless you're an RA living there for free. Communal living is also a great way to get viral meningitis.
