We use Erik Cruz. We were surprised by how he works because we aren't used to such personalized services. We started bundling with him because we just trusted he cared beyond the average insurance person. I was looking for extra insurance on something but didn't want to go through the trouble of itemizing my things (which obviously is required if you get the insurance I was looking in to), he was literally open to helping me do it and would follow up periodically to see if I was overwhelmed by the prospect and how he could help make it easier. Extremely personable, regularly contacts us just to follow up, he'll come to your home to work with you, he uses all method of communication to help you out. It's a lost art and this man has found a formula that has made us very happy and very loyal.

The headaches and buidling issues ruin the deal, not the person that points them out.

It all matters to everybody pal. Your wall is their wall, your roof is connected to their roof, their porch could connect to your fence, if I do sh*t with a permit, they should do sh*t with a permit.

Cause everyone knows that being concerned about a structural wall in the 3 story house next yours is the same as turning in the neighbor across the street who you've been feuding with about his parking habits.

Edit: I like the nod to Robert Blake in your post. Nice touch.

And you assume that's the reality? If I'm paying for a permit, they're paying for a permit. It's the system. And there would be nothing better than a neighbor doing it all on the sly, when you did it all by the book AND they are asshole parkers....win, win. You got something you didn't get a permit for and your guilt is trolling? Me thinks. That is all.

hello! i'm just got a job in jersey city off the journal sq. stop, and i'm beginning to look at apartments in jersey city. i'm a single female in her late 20's, and i'm looking for a neighborhood that is above all safe (my definition would be feeling safe if i'm walking to my car that is parked a few blocks away, or taking a few minutes to lock my bike up after a late night at work) and also walkable to bars/restaurants.

the research i've been doing leads me to think east of 78, but because ideally i'm looking for a one bedroom for less than 1800$, west of the waterfront. seems to me like there are lots of little pockets even in this defined area, which is why i wanted to pose the question on JClist. i'm open to areas closer to the journal sq. stop, or lincoln park area, but don't really know anything about those places.

also wondering what are the best places to find apartments in the city? i'm currently perusing craigslist, zillow, and trulia.

any recommendations are appreciated! thanks everyone.

Do a search related to safe neighborhoods on this message board. This question has been posted many times before with very long threads that trail off in to trolls...but there's still some good information there.

The buildings make the acoustics in that area crazy. You get every little festival with the same food & shop stands setting up over the summer with the bass going like crazy and the way the buildings create wind tunnels around at Exchange Place sound travels unbelievably. They have spring/summer music at the end of the pier which is lovely and never obnoxiously loud. But then you have a festival around that statue with a sound guy with speakers the size of his van who doesn't give a sh*t about bass and it's nuts. Maybe they're just trying to curb bad taste.

$14K for stitches is outrageous. But, I think there might be more to the story.

My guess is that the kid had to be sedated because of the location of the cut and his age. Most 3 year olds I know would not sit still for 1 stitch to the chin let alone 4. Pinning down a freaked out kid isn't a good option.

If there was an anesthesiologist involved the cost would be much higher. Also they would be in the ER much longer than if it was just 4 stitches.

About 5 years a friend got stitches in the ER, the total was ~$1400. I think that's stitoo higll h.

Moral of the story is if you need a cut stitched up and the bleeding has stopped call your doctor or find an urgent care center in your network. Save the ER for life threatening situations.

I think it would have been in the $20K with anesthesiologist. I received a similar bill for a thumb stitch situation in Hoboken. Not before they turned me away in emergency saying I was okay before x-rays only to learn I had to return in an emergency situation again because it was broken and they failed to identify that - by then a bone infection kicked in.

Anyone else get this standard letter from them when you wrote them? I still think they need to rid themselves of the Hoboken stop on the weekends.

To the PATH community:

Our decision to suspend weekend PATH service at the World Trade and Exchange Place stations was made only after many discussions with our professional staff and was not taken lightly. As an agency that prides itself in the movement of people and goods, temporary service outages at any of our facilities is always done as a last resort and only after all practical options have been considered.

Your letter talks about the hardship that you face with the closings of these two important stations, and as a regular mass transit commuter myself, I clearly understand the issues you face. But we made the decision for one very important reason: public safety. The Positive Train Control (PTC) system we are installing on PATH, which requires the weekend shutdowns, will greatly enhance PATH safety and prevent what may potentially be life-threatening accidents. We are committed to meeting the December 2015 mandate set by the Federal Railroad Administration to complete this work, and have lost more than a year?s worth of progress on this project due to the damage sustained as a result of Superstorm Sandy. Additionally, we are still completing essential restoration and resiliency work, including power-washing of the tunnels and replacing almost 90 percent of their utilities and infrastructure?all of which must be done to fight against salt corrosion we are battling due to the flooding that occurred during the storm.

Prior to the weekend closings, we undertook extensive marketing efforts to get the word out to all of those travelers who may be inconvenienced by the closings. In addition to announcing and advertising the closures in all of our stations, on our website, in the media, through PATHAlerts, and via Twitter, we also sent a series of communications to building managers in the Exchange Place area and met with your local elected officials. We also put in place the following concrete mitigation steps:

1. We took steps to increase service ? and decrease wait times ? on the Journal Square to 33rd Street (via Hoboken) line. This line is now running with an average of ten-minute headways during the day on weekends, and 15-minute headways where we used to run every 35 minutes.

2. Passengers can still access PATH service to Manhattan from Grove Street, Newport, and Journal Square stations in Jersey City, in addition to Hoboken, Newark, and Harrison.

3. Additionally, we worked with NJ Transit to cross-honor PATH tickets on the Hudson Bergen Light Rail at the Exchange Place, Newport and Hoboken stations during the weekend PATH closings. We also have coordinated with NJ Transit and New York City subway officials about letting their potential connecting customers know of the station outages.

4. A PATH Passenger Information Agent is also stationed at the World Trade Center and Exchange Place stations from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both weekend days to help guide any travelers who require additional assistance getting to their destinations.

PATH will evaluate this past holiday weekend?s station closures as well the coming weekend and consider any other potential changes. We will continue to explore suggestions you and other PATH customers make to us, and will look for other practical options to mitigate the impact from the weekend shutdowns.

Sincerely,

Stephen Kingsberry
Director & General Manager, PATH

Anyone know much about this group? Sponsors underprivileged youths? I looked at their website and they sound great. I ask, however, because not everything that goes on in New Jersey is always legitimate and before considering my donation to the association I'd like to hear from others....they are quite aggressive as far as soliciting donations. I finally had to insist they stop calling my work number and I don't know why that raised a red flag for me...

Slightly off topic but my neighbor did a total house gut. Beautiful interior, new kitchen, bathrooms, plumbing etc., even created a basement suite for rent. Their taxes are still $8,000/year for a four floor large brownstone and yet mine are $16K/year for a similar situation except I bought mine after the renovation (so I guess you couldn't hide it) and mine is 1/4 the size, same neighborhood. They had all the permits on their windows which would lead me to believe the city obviously knew. I know he has connections with the city because he's said as much and has avoided a lot of headaches thanks to some envelopes passing hands....yet, how did the city not recognize a full gutted renovation and basement suite should have higher annual property taxes?

Healy was a political corrupt hack but at least he actually cared about the people of JC and not solely his own ambitions. When you think about it, this last JC mayor election increasingly seems like a choice between two godawful candidates.

You have got to be kidding me. Wow. Dude. You are a piece of work. The amount of things Fulop has done in less than a year compared to Healy? Just, wow. I can't even argue it's not worth it.

The truth is that most of my upsetness comes from how aggressively Fulop is pushing the McCabe contract without explaining any details about it. I don't think I'll be needing an ambulance any time soon, but if Fulop gets his way, an ambulance ride may cost up to $2,000.

This is not an exaggeration, just read any article that discusses out of network bills and rates for ambulance rides. And McCabe operates the most expensive hospital in the country (in Bayonne). Also, they donated to Fulop's campaign.

All Fulop has to do is release some kind of statement that would discuss the estimated cost difference to residents. Yes, everyone has different insurance plans, so the cost of a JCMC ambulance ride will vary, but since McCabe is out of network, I'd imagine everyone will be getting an extremely hefty bill. All this for a potential maximum payment to the city of $2 million.

In the rare event this benefit is transferred to residents in the form of lower taxes, it will be completely offset by the huge ambulance bills JC residents will receive.

Sorry to go off-topic, but in my opinion the atrocious way Fulop is handling the ambulance situation reflects extremely poorly on his character, and makes me regret voting for him.

So who do you wish you voted for instead? And where do you think we'd be now with someone else? Curious.

When you get out of the PATH / Light Rail at the Hoboken Terminal, the cab prices vary, AND they fill the car with customers, even though it's illegal, and it says so in every cab... but since the racket exists, and laws are never enforced on the drivers it won't stop.

My trip to the Heights can be anywhere from $7 to $8 to $9 to $10 - depending on who the cab driver is. And, they fill the car and drop me off last. So, on one trip from the terminal, with four passengers, ending in the east side of the Heights, and the cabbie has probably made about $50 bucks or more... what a rip off....

There is a fare chart they should follow. I complained once to the Hoboken Taxi Commission and they sent this to me:

LOWER JERSEY CITY
Columbus Driver Area $12.00
Exchange Place $12.00
155 Washington Blvd. & 100 Warren St. $12.00
4th Street $9.00
7th Street $11.00
Grove St. PATH $12.00
Grand St. & Jersey Ave. $16.00
Grand St. & Pacific $18.00
Pacific & Johnston $18.00
Pacific, Caven Point Road $22.00

Phone: (201) 216-1090
http://www.hobokennj.org/departments/ ... taxi-limousine-licensing/

It is legal to hail in Hoboken. Contrary to popular belief or common local practice, it is legal to hail a licensed yellow cab (although not limousines) anywhere in Hoboken, not just at the train terminal. There are 65 authorized taxis. Before you enter a cab, make sure you see the circular Hoboken logo and number.

Only one fare per taxi. Taxis may accept only one $5 fare ? a person or group of persons going to the same location ? per ride. With the permission of the first fare, a second fare may join, but no more. This rule has been laxly enforced and widely violated in the past, but that is no excuse for continued violations, and the Administration will investigate and take action against all reported violations.

The local fare for yellow cabs is ALWAYS $5.00 The local fare is $5.00 for all yellow cabs and limousines and $6.00 for Indian Way car service regardless of weather or shortage of drivers. In the past, it has been common for residents and visitors to be grossly overcharged by taxi drivers during inclement weather or high demand. Please report any violations.

Call if you see a violation. Residents who believe there is a violation should immediately contact Jennifer Boehm at the Division of Taxi & Limousine Licensing by calling 201-216-1090 or emailing taxi@hobokennj.org and providing the time of the incident, the taxi number (or driver?s license number or vehicle plate number), and a description of what happened. Residents are the City?s eyes and ears, and we can only take action if we know there is a problem.

I'd say the most upscale high-rises are DTJC closer to the water. 77 Hudson? Isn't it 77 Greene Street? I can't remember. When we sold our place we looked at all of them including Maxwell's & Crystal Point, there's a new one right beside the Newport private beach park. Some are owner lease and 2 bedrooms can range from $4800-5600K/month. But all close to Ferry, PATH, lighrail with pools, indoor/outdoor whirlpools, gyms, valet parking, concierge services etc. I didn't once consider the Beacon and wouldn't in light of my preferences, need for proximity to things, safety for family (wife and kid walking dog).

Agree perhaps saying something other than very rich would have reduced on the eye roll or the desire to put the poster down a notch (it's like the expression "don't hate me because I'm beautiful" lol). Perhaps tact by saying "affluent" or something less brash. I think the wording is a sore point when there's such a gap now between the rich and poor that hearing "rich" (if you watched the documentary by Johnson & Johnson's heir - no one with money ever talks about being rich, let alone writing the word, apparently the elite have a code about these things)..but does than mean she deserves to be antagonized in this forum? Oh that's right it's JClist! Of course she does (insert sarcasm here). Then again, it's worth debate considering the times we live in.
