Or maybe they wanted to do nothing, sit back and watch their values soar with low taxes on undeveloped property. The land has been appreciating far faster than improvements. I get doing nothing, I do it very well myself, but that isn't what they agreed to over a decade ago.

I asked this question before, why did the owner not start construction on his project that gained approval 1.5 years ago? The smaller lot owners now have targets on their backs because of this guy. Yes eminent domain is shitty, but Mecca really drove a knife through the back of his neighbors for stalling construction as long as he did. They should be equally angry at him.

I used to live on Monmouth on the other side of Old Colony Mall. I still take my kids to P.S. 3. I go shopping at Ranch 99 and have the occasional craving for Popeyes or a donut from Dunkin Donuts. A while back I used the auto body shop to fix a banged up car for a few hundred bucks that the insurance company insisted was totalled. Point being that I've been around there and still have occasion to go there.

Sure you could spruce up those few blocks and build some townhouses or apartments, but is the city really hurting because they haven't done so yet? If the current landowners are really squatting or speculating that's one thing, but if it's just a question of waiting a couple of years, or maybe building a little smaller, then why give a developer the power of eminent domain at the expense of current owners, residents, and business owners?

In light of the recent tax increases in Downtown due to the reval and pending school tax increases, it's in DTJC's best interest to build as dense as it can, wherever it can. Many homeless people live in that area in the abandoned housing and that area does not feel safe at night.

"My client worked closely with the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency throughout the development process, so to be told this 18 months later is a bit shocking," Burke said."

Regard your comment on how the areas looks--Not everything has to be luxury residential buildings.

The projects you mention gained approval in late 2016 I believe. It's been close to 1.5 years - why hasn't any ground been broken? I feel bad for the small lot owners in that area that may get forced out, this seems like an overly aggressive land grab by the city to a politically connected developer, but that area needs change asap. The next recession could be here before you know it and if construction doesn't start, that area could remain a dump for another 10 years.

I got in late so I missed the first few speakers, but the one immediately preceding the parent was decrying the growth of noisy restaurants/rowdy bars on Restaurant Row and worried that the pedestrian mall expansion would lead to more such establishments.

Also, I think it's a little heartless to say that a parent concerned about the safety of his child walking to and from school isn't a "real concern."

Despite her constant yammering about families and how families must absolutely be provided no less than 2 parking spaces by the city (to be subsidized by everyone else), she has no concern for families that don?t use her preferred mode of transportation to get from A to B.

Therefore we must rip out this new asset that thousands of people are using and enjoying so we can provide space for 50 people to park and idle.

Maybe with this ordinance, the silent majority of DTJC residents can finally speak out on eliminating parking minimums, adding protected bike lanes and more density (which will lower our taxes and create more amenities) without having to constantly be intimidated by the likes of Yvonne and her neighborhood association NIMBYs.

What proof is there that this actually happened other than a "he said, she said"?

Al Santos is a DeGise ally and Fulop was behind Brian Stack, so there's a potential political motive to the accusation.

How do we even know this really happened and why are we taking the Kearny mayor's word for it? Why have no other witnesses been interviewed for this story? Additionally it seems there was already tension brewing between the two even before this vote took place: https://hudsoncountyview.com/jersey-ci ... king-for-hcdo-chair-vote/

Until there's proof, this is just another nonsense conspiracy theory to keep the idiot Yvonne NIMBYs entertained for a few days.

Did we ever get an answer to the question on what exactly they're upgrading as part of the current weekend closures? They've said it's for PTC (positive train control for forcibly slowing down a speeding train), but are they also doing CBTC, the guts of the signal system upgrade we really need?

After this summer, will CBTC be installed or will it just be PTC that gets done and we'll have to endure yet another closure later in the year?

EDIT: We were promised CBTC by the end of this year and I haven't seen anything mentioned, so I hope that's not once again delayed by several years.

And the reason this monstrosity should stay is why? Because it is old? It is not in highly visible location to the public where it could be the centerpiece of a new green space. Doubtful anyone even notices it as they walk by... and you certainly don't see it driving by on York.

As for the PHNA... where were you when they sold out to support taking down the old factory on Van Vorst and build those towers that fit so well into the neighborhood? They will risk losing their free Annual Pancake Breakfast Cafe donated by Prep. Don't count on them to join your silly preservation fight.

I don't recall the factory having any architectural value. It's an old rectangle brick building with no aesthetic qualities. That's the stuff that should be getting torn down.

Regarding PHNA, isn't that like, their fucking job to save an actual historical building in a historic district? What do these groups even stand for if they won't prevent the demolition of a historic building?

Why the sudden change? Is it just because you found yourself on the same side as the mayor you despise? Seems a bit odd.

Just another example of her ability to lie and change position on literally any subject. She was for it originally because of her "only American events should get monuments" nonsense in addition to her general toxic NIMBYism (if it's not a parking garage, it's useless). She changed position and became against it after it blew up in the mayor's face and her minions started filing lawsuits. In the end, nobody will remember this whole thing in a couple of months and Yvonne will have once again been served a humiliating loss.

Indeed, this is Yvonne and the NA's real legacy. They drove out local businesses that served many to preserve parking for few wealthy homeowners in the area. The sad thing is, now that those spaces have been turned to condos, we can never have that level of local retail in the residential neighborhoods again.

You can see that they haven't changed at all. Look at all the HCNA members that came here to gloat when they successfully forced Prato out of their space. We'll never have the version of Jersey City El and I feel most people want as long as these corrupt groups are allowed to have unchecked influence.
