Here I have to disagree. When the house is on fire you don't obsess about lead paint in the walls. Focusing on enforcement benefits ALL the parties using JC streets, not just cyclists. We need a Traffic Division at Public Safety the way NYC has. This would pay for itself and benefit EVERYONE on the streets rather than the protected bikeway which would cost a lot, and benefit the cyclists while hindering the motorists.

I think we should hinder the motorists. They have free reign on Grand Street. We gave them quite a chance and they blew it. Road diets are shown to work without creating insane traffic jams (after a period of adjustment, at least). If there is reduced throughput people making unnecessary trips or using Grand as a shortcut to the tunnel will choose a different way to go.

I lived on Grand Street for six years and it was a constant nightmare. I'm sure the current owner of my condo would appreciate the increased value of their property when their street is no longer a highway.

Just to reiterate, the guys doing the actual work at Joe's over the last few years would probably appreciate your continued business since they're not exactly in a such a great location anymore. They're at the end of West 5th in a small industrial lot. Here's a map if it helps:

False dichotomy. We can be safe and protect the human rights of undocumented people at the same time. The thought of rounding people up is very uncomfortable when we have white supremacists advising the President Elect.

Joe basically retired off the sale of the building. The guys who work there took over and moved to Bayonne by the old A&P, close to the 8th street light rail. I will continue using them!

I have this one (or the three bike version), it's a breeze to get the rack and the bikes on and off. You can just stick it in your trunk while you're riding:

Zactly right! Not just that, but the "we took their environment" argument falls flat when we're talking about dense urban development, which arguably does the best job of habitat preservation by concentrating people in cities and leaving real wild places alone. There's simply too many of them because, like deer, they love the environments we create: lots of food and no predators.

There are predators of geese, like coyotes, foxes, and some of the larger birds of prey. Geese used to be pretty rare around here until we insisted that every unpaved space in the country be covered in short cut grass. It is our fault that geese are everywhere, so please forgive some people for thinking they shouldn't die uncomfortable deaths as a result.

Well, maybe somebody should look into that.

33:1-12.31. Acquisition of beneficial interest in more than two retail licenses prohibited
On and after the effective date of this act no person, as the same is defined in R.S. 33:1-1, shall, except as hereinafter provided, acquire a beneficial interest in more than a total of two alcoholic beverage retail licenses, but nothing herein shall require any such person who has, on August 3, 1962, such an interest in more than two such licenses to surrender, dispose of, or release his interest in any such license or licenses.

It may have been attractive several lives ago, but we'll struggle to remember what it looked like in a few years.

I know a lot of people in the village are opposed to the development going on (and there is a LOT of it), but I think it's inevitable and unstoppable. I don't see what the big deal is. Most of the area is basically industrial wasteland. How many used car dealers do we need in a rapidly densifying neighborhood?

When it came to getting permits, though, I used a licensed architect in New Jersey. Don't know if you could get your plans drawn at Upwork and then stamped by an architect like Brewster suggested.

In your experience, is Upwork better than Updog?

Those nice old cornices were made with mass produced ornamental wood cuts that were just tacked onto a backing board. In the context of today's standards they're beautiful architectural details, but at the time there was nothing very special about them. You can pick and choose pieces made of polyurethane as a suitable replacement: http://www.spectis.com/PDF/blocks.pdf

Do you understand the conditions of the powerhouse? I have been inside several times with Cultural Affairs. The worst parts, the corroded iron stacks and the east facing tower have been removed/stabilized. I'd think the Port Authority would move their equipment if it was "on the brink of collapse."

Jersey City has thrown out too much of its history to allow yet another monument be destroyed. There are plenty of parking lots in the area that could be utilized for green space if the city really wanted to do so. The waterfront walkway is also not that far away.

Hello, fellow JC Man. I agree that the Powerhouse should be saved at all costs, but it was built in 1908. The 1910 census had Jersey City's population at 267,779. That is higher than it is today by over 10,000. Downtown was high density at the time, but in the tenement sense, not the luxury highrise sense.
