Teen was shot multiple times in daytime murder, authorities

JERSEY CITY -- A 19-year-old man who was killed in a daytime shooting on Tuesday afternoon was shot multiple times in the chest, authorities said.

Residents on Woodlawn Avenue reported hearing shots fired at about 3:30 p.m. Police arrived at the scene near 95 Woodlawn Ave. and found Rasheed Rayson with multiple gunshot wounds, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.

Rayson was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:50 p.m., marking the city's fourth homicide and second fatal shooting in under two weeks.

No one has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting and the cause and manner of Rayson's death are still pending, Suarez said in the statement.

A tense scene played out on the block between Corcoran and Van Cleef streets Tuesday afternoon as dozens of friends and family members gathered to watch as authorities investigated the murder.

"They took our brother," one woman cried as Rayson's body was being taken from the scene.

Rayson's death is the 11th murder in Jersey City and 13th in Hudson County this year.
